Postharvest Sensory and Phenolic Characterization of ‘Elegant Lady’ and ‘Carson’ Peaches Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Infante,Rodrigo; Contador,Loreto; Rubio,Pía; Aros,Danilo; Peña-Neira,Álvaro.
High quality fruits are increasingly demanded along with the need to ensure this attribute to consumers. Thus, this study was aimed at characterizing a melting (‘Elegant Lady’) and a non-melting flesh (‘Carson’) peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) varieties by considering both their bioactive compound contribution and their sensory quality in ripe fruit at harvest and after a prolonged period of cold storage. Cultivars were evaluated at harvest (F0) and after 30 d of cold storage (F30), as well as after a maturation period at 20 °C for both F0 and F30 (R0 and R30, respectively). Fruit weight, flesh firmness, soluble solid content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), and background color (Hue) were recorded at each stage. Furthermore, total phenol content was...

Effect of Ethylene Inhibitors on Quality Attributes of Apricot cv. Modesto and Patterson during Storage Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Valdés,Héctor; Pizarro,Melissa; Campos-Vargas,Reinaldo; Infante,Rodrigo; G. Defilippi,Bruno.
Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) fruit are highly susceptible to flesh softening, loss of flavor and fruit decay, particularly during postharvest storage. Most of these quality changes observed during fruit ripening are under ethylene regulation. We performed a study with the objective of determining the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) applications on quality attributes of Modesto and Patterson apricot cultivars. 1-MCP was applied at a rate of 1000 and 10 000 nL L-1 of SmartFresh™, and AVG at a rate 100 and 1000 mg L-1 of Retain®. Quality evaluations were performed after 20 and 30 days of cold storage and after a shelf-life period of 3-4 days at 20 °C. In general, both ethylene inhibitors were effective in reducing the...

Determination of harvest maturity of D'Agen plums using the chlorophyll absorbance index Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Infante,Rodrigo; Rubio,Pía; Contador,Loreto; Noferini,Massimo; Costa,Guglielmo.
The objective determination of the optimal harvest date for plums intended either for industrial processing or for consumption as fresh fruit is a fundamental concern of the fruit industry. A portable visible/near infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopic device was used to sort D'Agen plums harvested around the traditional commercial harvest date. The chlorophyll absorbance index was found to be capable of segregating plums into classes of maturity according to various concentrations of soluble solids and fruit compression strenght values. Fruits with a chlorophyll absorbance index value of less than 1.59 showed no differences in flesh firmness. Plums harvested with chlorophyll absorbance index values of 1.20-1.29 had a fruit compression strenght of 1.25 N and a...

Perceived quality in fresh peaches: an approach through structural equation modeling Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mora,Marcos; Espinoza,Jacqueline; Schnettler,Berta; Echeverría,Gemma; Predieri,Stefano; Infante,Rodrigo.
The quality requirements that consumers consider in their decision to purchase fresh fruit have garnered a great deal of attention from the actors in the fresh fruit productivity chain. This study seeks to identify attributes that could explain how a consumer of fresh peaches perceives quality. The focus on the peach was because of the limited knowledge of the signs of quality that the consumer is seeking in this fruit. As a result, the objective was to produce a model that explains the perception of the quality of fresh peaches by Spanish consumers. A theoretical model was created that explains quality using a set of intrinsic and extrinsic attributes. The information was from a survey of closed questions administered in person to a non-probabilistic...
