Many consumers believe that food from plants grown under certain conditions, such as organic agriculture, will benefit health more than conventional food. This cannot be determined simply by analysing the material, since our understanding of the connections between food components and health is still to imprecise for such a purpose. Rather than waiting until basic research provides the knowledge needed for this approach, in the spring of 2001 we have initiated a project to study physiological effects of plant quality directly, in an animal experiment. The following cultivation treatments are used to grow plants that are typical ingredients for a human diet (potato, mature peas, kale, spring wheat, oilseed rape, carrots and apples): 1. A model of a... |

The present investigation aimed to study the ileal and fecal digestibility of three forages (Clover grass, Clover grass silage and Pea-Barley silage) supplemented to a basal diet. A total of 24 pigs, adapted to eating forages by supplementing a basal feed with clover grass silage from weaning, were fitted with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum at approximate 30 kg LW. For each of the three types of forage, two balance trials with 4 weeks interval were carried out. Two pigs in each test were fed the basal diet while 6 others were fed the basal diet plus forage throughout the whole experiment. The intake of forages was relative low and quite variable and accounted on average for only 10-12 % of the daily dry matter intake. Ileal digestibility estimated by... |

Environmental as well as cultivation factors may greatly influence the chemical composition of plants. The main factors affecting chemical composition of foodstuff is level and type of fertilizer (conventional and organic cultivation systems), location or soiltype and year of harvest. Organic foods are defined as products which are produced under controlled cultivation conditions characterized by the absence of synthetic fertilizers and very restricted use of pesticides. Dietary carbohydrates constitute a major fraction of most feedstuffs and can be divided according to glycosidic linkage into sugars (mono- and disaccharides), oligosaccharides, starch and non-starch polysaccharides (NSP). The bulk of disaccharides and starch will be broken down by the... |

In a recent study it was investigated, through a well-controlled animal feeding experiment, whether conventional and organic food products showed differences in animal physiology of a type and magnitude that could indicate that organic products would affect humans differently. The primary, but still tentative conclusion from this study was that the most significant effects on rats was observed on health aspects that have rarely been assessed in prior studies: Immune status, sleep/activity pattern, accumulation of adipose tissue, liver function, and vitamin E status, while a large numbers of markers of “traditional” nutritional value showed no differences. Although the results of the present study could not directly be applied to organic and conventional... |

The effect of three iso-energetic and iso-nitrogeneous diets composed of ingredients originating from three different cultivation systems (“Organic”, low input of fertilizer without pesticides; “Minimally fertilised”, low input of fertilizer and high input of pesticides, “Conventional”, high input of fertilizer and high input of pesticides) was investigated with respect to several physiological responses and biomarkers of health using a rat model. The diets were optimized according to the nutritional requirements of rats, except for a high content of fat. The diets consisted of equal proportions of potatoes, carrots, peas, green kale, apples, and rapeseed oil, which were grown according to three different cultivation systems. Even though most of the... |

Food preference tests represent an approach in food quality research, taking advantage of the instinctive feeding behavior of animals by allowing them to choose between food samples. A great number of investigations using laboratory rats concerning essential and/or dangerous contents are based on this method and have shown its effectiveness. The selection of food is influenced to some degree by smell and taste, but mostly by wholesomeness and need. In the present study a preference test was used in order to test eventual selective differences among rats with regard to same composition, but cultivated in three different systems. The experimental diets were formulated to meet the NRC requirements for rats by mixing 40% of freeze dried carrots with an... |

In 2 experiments, 10 gilts (30 kg initial liveweight) were given a basal diet with fresh or frozen/thawed clover-grass, clover-grass silage or whole-crop pea-barley silage. The faecal digestibility of gross energy (GE), DM, organic matter (OM), dietary fibre (DF) and CP were measured. The 3 roughages, leaves and stems of clover-grass and the basal diets were also tested for in vitro OM digestibility. Roughage intake was similar in both experiments and the average proportion of roughage ingested was 18-19% of DM. There were no differences between fresh and frozen/thawed clover-grass nutrient digestibility values. Glucose (cellulose) and xylose were the main constituents of the non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) in the roughages, with whole-crop pea-barley... |

Trace elements, bioactive secondary metabolites and vitamins are among the most important quality parameters in plants. Yet, very little information is available on their content, bioavailability and health effects in organically grown plant food products. The main objective of OrgTrace is to study the impact of different agricultural management practices relevant for organic farming on the ability of cereal and vegetable crops to absorb trace elements from the soil and to synthesize bioactive compounds (secondary metabolites, antioxidant vitamins and phytates) with health promoting effects. Based on different plant products produced in OrgTrace, diets were composed and the bioavailabilities of health promoting substances were analyzed in a human... |

The consumption of organic foods has been increasing over the last decades and organic products are becoming more visible on the market. Consumers perceive that organic foods are of better quality, more nutritious and healthier, and these perceptions are some of the main drivers of the organic market. Scientific research on organic foodstuffs is contradictory, and knowledge regarding the effect of cultivation system on the nutritive value and the possible relationship with human health could be further explored. Although some systematic differences in the nutritional content, i.e. nitrogen, protein, vitamin C, phosphorous and phenolic compounds of plant products grown under different cultivation systems have been observed, it is a difficult task to prove... |

Mussels cultured on lines for nine months and harvested in March were boiled to remove shells and processed into a dry meal or a silage acidified by formic acid. Starfish meal was prepared from starfish caught in May, and a starfish juice fraction was obtained by pressing fresh starfish. Commercial fish silage from farmed salmon was also included in the experiment. The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) was evaluated in a Latin square design with pigs (initial weight 39.3 kg) fitted with a simple T-cannula in the terminal ileum. Diets contained 131–162 g CP/kg and 5 g chromic oxide/kg. Endogenous losses of protein and AA were estimated by feeding an N-free diet. On a dry matter (DM) basis, mussel meal... |

BACKGROUND: Organic food is perceived as being of better quality and healthier than conventional foods although the scientific research on organic foodstuffs is highly contradictory. The aim of the present study was to investigate if an intake of carrots from four different cultivation systems grown in two consecutive years would influence various biomarkers of health in a rat model. All rats were fed a diet with 40% carrot content. The carrots were grown under conventional (C), “minimalistic” organic (O1), organic (O2), or “very” organic cultivation systems (O3). A control group (CO) being fed standard rat chow was included. RESULTS: The plasma α-tocopherol concentration was higher in the O2 carrot-based diet than in the C carrot based-diet in one year,... |
