Biogas in organic agriculture - effects on productivity, energy self-sufficiency and greenhouse gas emissions Organic Eprints
Pugesgaard, Siri; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Dalgaard, Tommy; Jørgensen, Uffe.
Reduction in the dependency on fossil fuels has been identified as one of the important areas for development of organic farming in Denmark (ICROFS, 2008). The increased public awareness on the need for actions against global warming has brought Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and the use of fossil fuels into focus in the agricultural organisations in general as well as in the organic agricultural organisations. Several scenarios for biogas production in organic agriculture could be imagined. The implementation of biogas production on organic farms and the effect of this implementation depend on the existing farming system, how the implementation is done and how this changes the farming system. Therefore the aim of this paper is to focus specifically...

Elimination behaviour and soil mineral nitrogen load in an organic system with lactating sows – comparing pasture based systems with and without access to poplar (Populus sp.) trees Organic Eprints
Jakobsen, M.; Hermansen, J.E.; Andersen, Heidi Mai-Lis; Jørgensen, Uffe; Labouriau, R.; Rasmussen, Jim; Kongsted, A.G..
Innovative strategies in free-range pig production is needed to improve the environmental performance of the system. Based on previous studies, inclusion of trees was hypothesized to improve the system’s nitrogen efficiency. We investigated sow elimination behaviour, faeces load and localisation as well as soil mineral nitrogen load in pasture based individual paddocks with and without access to two rows of poplar (Populus sp.) trees. Unlike expected sows showed no preference for eliminating in the zone with poplars but clearly avoided defecating near the hut, feed and water. Soil mineral nitrogen load showed a heterogeneous pattern as also found in previous studies. In comparison to grass, our results indicated that the poplars had an increased winter...

Oplæg til afgrødekode der kan anvendes til græsarealer med vedagtig bevoksning til svin på friland Organic Eprints
Kyed, Sybille; Kongsted, Anne Grete; Jørgensen, Uffe; Hermansen, John E..

Visions for organic bioenergy production in Denmark Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, Inge.
There is a large potential for organic bioenergy production, which can be combined with the present food production and the provision of multiple other goods and services required by society; i.e. a cleaner aquatic environment, or nature values in cultural landscapes. This paper presents six scenarios for bioenergy production from organic farming in Denmark, with a total energy production potential of around 6.7 PJ/yr. This potential is compared to the present energy use of around 2.5 PJ/yr, and the po-tentials for energy savings equalling 0.1-0.5 PJ/yr.

Effect of poplar trees on nitrogen and water balance in outdoor pig production – A case study in Denmark Organic Eprints
Manevski, Kirl; Jakobsen, Malene; Kongsted, A.G.; Geogiadis, Petros; Labouriau, R.; Hermansen, J.E.; Jørgensen, Uffe.
Nitrate leaching from outdoor pig production is a long-standing environmental problem for surface and groundwater pollution. In this study, the effects of inclusion of poplar trees in paddocks for lactating sows on nitrogen (N) balances were studied for an organic pig farm in Denmark. Vegetation conditions, soil water and nitrate dynamics were measured in poplar and grass zones of paddocks belonging to main treatments: access to trees (AT), no access to trees (NAT) and a control without trees (NT), during the hydrological year April 2015 to April 2016. Soil water drainage for each zone, simulated by two simulation models (CoupModel and Daisy), was used to estimate nitrate leaching from the zones in each paddock. N balances (input minus output) for the...

Biomass energy in organic farming - the potential role of short rotattion coppice Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, Uffe; Dalgaard, Tommy; Kristensen, Erik Steen.
One of the aims of organic farming is to “reduce the use of non-renewable resources (e.g. fossil fuels) to a minimum”. So far, however, only very little progress has been made to introduce renewable energy in organic farming. This paper presents energy balances of Danish organic farming compared with energy balances of conventional farming. In general, the conversion to organic farming leads to a lower energy use (approximately 10% per unit of product). But the production of energy in organic farming is very low compared with the extensive utilisation of straw from conventional farming in Denmark (energy content of straw used for energy production was equivalent to 18% of total energy input in Danish agriculture in 1996). Biomass is a key energy carrier...

Developments in greenhouse gas emissions and net energy use in Danish agriculture - How to achieve substantial CO2 reductions? Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Petersen, B.M.; Petersen, Søren O.; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, Troels; Hutchings, Nicholas J.; Gyldenkerne, Steen; Hermansen, J.E..
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture are a significant contributor to total Danish emissions. Consequently, much effort is currently given to the exploration of potential strategies to reduce agricultural emissions. This paper presents results from a study estimating agricultural GHG emissions in the form of methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide (including carbon sources and sinks, and the impact of energy consumption/bioenergy production) from Danish agriculture in the years 1990-2010. An analysis of possible measures to reduce the GHG emissions indicated that a 50-70% reduction of agricultural emissions by 2050 relative to 1990 is achievable, including mitigation measures in relation to the handling of manure and fertilisers,...

Concepts for a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of a new more biobased economy in rural production landscapes Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, I.T.; Gylling, M.; Dejgaard, J.; Dubgaard, Alex; Kjeldsen, Chris; Hermansen, J.E.; Turner, K.G.; Christen, Ben; Andersen, P.S..
This study presents a new approach to model the biophysical potentials for increased biomass harvest in Denmark, and a multi-criteria sustainability assessment of the socio-economic and environmental effects of different scenarios for such increased production and new biobased economy in rural landscapes. Thereby the results serve as input to the ongoing productivism – post-productivism debate related to rural spaces in Europe. Empirical results from a case study of large scale conversion to biorefenery technologies, aiming to increase the total Danish harvest of biomass by 10 million tonnes via the conversion to new types of crop production and land management, is used as an example, and will be related to the common conceptual model presented by the...
