Elimination behaviour and soil mineral nitrogen load in an organic system with lactating sows – comparing pasture based systems with and without access to poplar (Populus sp.) trees Organic Eprints
Jakobsen, M.; Hermansen, J.E.; Andersen, Heidi Mai-Lis; Jørgensen, Uffe; Labouriau, R.; Rasmussen, Jim; Kongsted, A.G..
Innovative strategies in free-range pig production is needed to improve the environmental performance of the system. Based on previous studies, inclusion of trees was hypothesized to improve the system’s nitrogen efficiency. We investigated sow elimination behaviour, faeces load and localisation as well as soil mineral nitrogen load in pasture based individual paddocks with and without access to two rows of poplar (Populus sp.) trees. Unlike expected sows showed no preference for eliminating in the zone with poplars but clearly avoided defecating near the hut, feed and water. Soil mineral nitrogen load showed a heterogeneous pattern as also found in previous studies. In comparison to grass, our results indicated that the poplars had an increased winter...

Review: Pig excretory behaviour Organic Eprints
Andersen, Heidi Mai-Lis; Kongsted, A.G.; Jakobsen, M..
Finding ways to motivate pigs to excrete in dedicated areas is of major importance for the environment, human health and animal welfare. This review investigates pigs’ excretory behaviour and the relation to the rearing and housing environment in addition to identifying important knowledge gaps in this respect. Eliminating away from the nest/lying area appears to be innate but evolves over time. Postpartum, piglets urinate and defecate close to the nest, indicating that it is difficult to influence piglets’ choice of elimination area, as this is influenced by the sow’s choice of nest area. At increased age piglets begin to excrete further away from the nest, which is probably related to the fact that piglets start to spend more time away from it. There is...

Effect of genotype and supplement feed allowance on foraging activity, excretory behavior, and vegetation cover in an organic free-range pig system Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Jakobsen, M..
Organic food production is developing rapidly in Europe and other parts of the world. An important principle in organic production is “to provide living conditions that allow animals to express the basic aspects of their innate behaviour” (IFOAM, 2002). This principle is accentuated in the European regulations on organic production as “the livestock shall have permanent access to open air areas, preferable pasture” (EC No 834/2007).

Hermansen, J.E.; Jakobsen, M..

Integrated production of tree biomass and piglets - Effect of paddock design on sow excretory behaviour Organic Eprints
Andersen, H.M-L.; Kongsted, A.G.; Jakobsen, M..
In systems with an integrated production of trees and piglets it is important that the lactating sows are motivated to urinate and defecate adjacent to the trees to reduce nutrient losses. Adding poplar trees in one end of individual pasture-based paddocks did not motivate the sows to choose the area with trees for elimination independent of paddock design. The location of feed and hut influenced the sows’ excretory behaviour and the effect differed between the different combination of feed and hut location. Future work should focus further on overall paddock design to optimize nutrient uptake and to ensure an outdoor system that from both a welfare- and environmentally point of view is sustainable.
