Owing to their limited possibilities for either active or passive dispersal, their association with the soil habitat, their vulnerability towards a dry atmosphere, and, in fact, on account of their general ecology and ethology, Diplopoda among arthropods are surely one of the most important classes in relation to the study of historical biogeography. For the class as a whole the sea appears to be an unsuperable barrier as is proved by the almost complete absence of endemic taxa on oceanic islands. In many cases lowland plains also act as severe obstacles against the dispersal of millipedes. The presence or absence of diplopods on islands or continents, therefore, may give a strong argument in favour or against any supposed former land connection. The long... |

Description of two new species and a new subspecies in the genus Pogonosternum Jeekel, viz. P. laetificum nov. spec., P. adrianae nov. spec., and P. nigrovirgatum infuscum nov. subspec. from eastern Victoria. From the same area a second Victorian genus of the tribe Antichiropodini, Dicranogonus pix nov. gen., nov. spec., is described, which appears to be related most closely to Pseudostrongylosoma Verhoeff from North Queensland. |

Recently, in my paper on the Paradoxosomatidae of Borneo (JEEKEL, 1963), I discussed the taxonomy of the genus Pratinus Attems, 1937, and showed that the species of this genus in the wide sense as conceived by ATTEMS (1937, 1953) in majority belong to three other genera, viz., Orthomorpha Bollman, 1893, Leiozonius Jeekel, 1963, and Gigantomorpha Jeekel, 1963. Pratinus itself was restricted to a concept largely conforming to the idea held by POCOCK when he established this genus under the preoccupied name of Prionopeltis in 1895. Furthermore, attention was drawn to the fact that the two species of Euphyodesmus Attems, 1931, described from Ceylon, for which CHAMBERLIN (1941) created a separate subgenus Ceylonesmus, actually belong to Pratinus. In... |

A re-examination of the type material of the five described species of Mimosoma Chamberlin, 1920, has revealed that only two species have been based on male specimens. The gonopods of these two, M. setosum Chamberlin, 1920, and M. glabrum Chamberlin, 1920, are illustrated, and a description is given. Brief notes on the characters of the three remaining species are added. Mimosoma is regarded to be a synonym of Eustrongylosoma Silvestri, 1896 (new synonymy). |

Description of Cynotelopus notabilis n.g., n.sp. (Sphaerotheriida). The genus belongs to the tribe Cyliosomatini of the family Sphaerotheriidae, and appears to be related most closely to the eastern Australian genus Epicyliosoma Silvestri ( = Cyliosoma auct.). This constitutes the first record of a pill-millipede from Western Australia. Spirobolellus philiporum n.sp. (Spirobolida) is described from Philip Island (near Norfolk Island, Pacific Ocean). This probably endemic spirobolellid is the first millipede recorded from the island. Atopogonus bucculentus n.sp. (Polydesmida), from Queensland, is the first indubitably autochthonous species of the family Haplodesmidae, subfamily Atopogoninae, recorded from the Australian mainland. |

Redescriptions are given of the Sumatran Paradoxosomatidae described by Silvestri, 1895, and previously referred to the genus Strongylosoma Brandt, 1833. S. inerme Silv. is referred to the genus Dajakina Jeekel, 1963 (Orthomorphini). S. filum Silv. is made the type-species of the new genus Margaritosoma, which includes also S. nanum Silv. and Oxidus sequens Chamberlin, 1945, the latter from Java. For S. vellutatum Silv. the new genus Echinopeltis is proposed. Margaritosoma and Echinopeltis are both referable to the Sulciferini. S. infaustum, S. trifasciatum, S. modiglianii and S. simillimum are referred to the genus Sundanina Attems, 1914. S. elongatum Silv. is referred to the genus Sundaninella _ Jeekel, 1968. For S. dentatum Silv. the new genus Batakina... |

The Paradoxosomatidae of the Fiji Islands are discussed. As a result of the reexamination of the type material the taxonomic position of Orthomorpha lampra Chamberlin and Prionopeltis dasys Chamberlin is cleared. O. lampra is a senior synonym of Gyrodrepanum bimontanum (Carl), P. dasys a junior synonym of Anoplodesmus saussurii (Humbert). All the known paradoxosomatid species of the Fiji Islands are introduced from elsewhere, mostly from India. |

Descriptions of two new species: Antichiropus mammillifer n.sp., the first species of the genus recorded from outside Western Australia, related to A. minimus Attems and A. sulcatus Attems, and Tridactylogonus obscurus n.g., n.sp., a small species, taxonomically rather isolated, and perhaps related most closely to Notodesmus scotius Chamberlin, from Tasmania. First record from the Australian continent of Aulacoporus pruvoti (Brölemann), previously known only from New Caledonia. Orthomorpha coarctata (De Saussure), a well-known tropical ubiquist, is recorded for the first time from the Australian continent (Northern Territory). |

A number of paradoxosomatid species described from India and Ceylon have been re-examined. Pyragrogonus nov. gen. (Cnemodesmini) is proposed for Orthomorpha willeyi Carl, 1932, from Ceylon; Parchondromorpha nov. gen. and Harpagomorpha nov. gen. (Sulciferini) for Orthomorpha coonoorensis Carl, 1932, and Orthomorpha dentata Carl, 1932, from India, respectively. For Sundanina laevisulcata Carl, 1932, and S. hirta Carl, 1932, from India, the genus Antichirogomts nov. gen. is erected. Some notes are given concerning the characters of the genera Polydrepanum Carl ,1932, and Dasypharkis Attems, 1936 (Polydrepanini) and the status of the tribes Polydrepanini and Alogolykini. |

In this paper the species referable to the genus Aphistogoniulus Silvestri, 1897, are enumerated and their status is briefly discussed. Mystalides Attems, 1910, is a junior subjective synonym. Two species from Madagascar, A. quadridentatus (Attems, 1910) and A. polleni nov. spec., are described after material in the collection of the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam. The gonopods of a male from the type series of A. hova (De Saussure & Zehntner, 1897) are depicted. The name A. brolemanni nov. spec. is proposed for the material referred to A. hova by Brolemann, 1922. |

Description of Gasterogramma psi nov. gen., nov. spec., particularly characterized by the telopodite of the gonopods being torded about l80°, so that the spermal channel curves along the caudal side of the telopodite towards the lateral side, from where it enters the solenomerite. A further particular feature is the distal prolongation of the prefemur into a separate process. An attempt is made at a correct homologization of the elements of the gonopods. The genus appears to be closely related to Semnosoma Silvestri, 1903, from Chile, and on that account seems to constitute the first clear taxonomic link between the dalodesmid faunae of Australia and South America. |
