| We present a comprehensive regional bathymetric data compilation for the southwest Indian Ocean (swIOBC) covering the area from 4°S to 40°S and 20°E to 45°E with a spatial resolution of 250 m. For this, we used multibeam and singlebeam data as well as data from global bathymetric data compilations. We generated the swIOBC using an iterative approach of manual data cleaning and gridding, accounting for different data qualities and seamless integration of all different kinds of data. In comparison to existing bathymetric charts of this region, the new swIOBC benefits from nearly four times as many data-constrained grid cells and a higher resolution, and thus reveals formerly unseen seabed features. | Within the framework of the first phase of the Belgian Antarctic Research Programme (1986-1988), the Renard Centre of Marine Geology (RCMG) at the State University of Ghent has participated in two cruises organized by the Alfred-Wegener-lnstitut fur Polar- und Meeresforschung (Bremerhaven). Both cruises addressed different marine geological domains: the passive margin of the eastern Weddell Sea (cruise Antarktis V/ 4) and the active western margin of the Antarctic Peninsula (cruise Antarktis VI/2). In the Weddell Sea some 2650 km of high-resolution reflection seismic profiles have been shot, partly in connection with the drilling operations of ODP Leg 113 off Cape Norvegia. | During the ANTARKTIS VIII/5 cruise (December 1989 -March 1990), which was jointly carried out by AWI and RCMG, the seismic grid already available in the Weddell Sea could be expanded with up to 4100 km of high-resolution reflection seismic profiles. The Meso-Cenozoic seismostratigraphic model, originally defined on ODP Site 693 (Leg 113), was extended throughout the existing seismic database along the entire eastern Weddell Sea continental margin.
