Akvakultur - Nye udfordringer og nye muligheder Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.

Assessing stakeholder's experience and sensitivity on key issues for the economic growth of organic aquaculture production Organic Eprints
Lembo, Giuseppe; Jokumsen, Alfred; Spedicato, Maria Teresa; Facchini, Maria Teresa; Bitetto, Isabella.
Participatory management is widely recognised as a working method of paramount importance, based on the principles of knowledge sharing, accountability and legitimacy. Hence, it is broadly considered suitable for addressing issues related to the sustainable development of the seafood industry, and specifically, of the aquaculture system. A survey focused on the current EU regulatory framework was carried out to elicit stakeholders’ preferences, knowledge and experience on key issues for the development of organic aquaculture, supported by science-based regulations. The survey was completed by 65 stakeholders belonging to several categories, and it was supported by the implementation of the Analytic Hierarchy Process method. Stakeholders’ preferences were...

Proteinafgrøder til økologiske regnbueørreder (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.

The effect of protein and lipid source in organic feed for organic trout on sensory quality Organic Eprints
Hyldig, Grethe; Green-Pedersen, Ditte Pedersen; Jacobsen, Charlotte; Baron, Caroline; Jokumsen, Alfred; Nielsen, Henrik Hauch.
The aim of this work was to study whether the type of protein and lipid source in feed for organic Rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss) influenced the sensory quality. The protein sources were fishmeal and a matrix of organic vegetable plant mealsproteins, while the lipid sources were fish oil and organic oils of linseed, sunflower, rapeseed and grape seed, respectively. Sensory profiling was performed after 3, 5, 7 and 14 days of storage in ice. Besides sensory analysis also lipid profiles weare measured. The resultsed showed that the lipid type in the feed aeffected the sensory characteristics after 3 days of storage. Especially the trout that had grape seed oil in the feed had a different sensory profile than the trout that had fish oil in the feed....

Proactive coping style in early emerging rainbow trout carries a metabolic cost with no apparent return Organic Eprints
Skov, Peter V.; Joao de Jesus Gregersen, Kim; Gesto, Manuel; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The timing with which salmonid larvae emerge from their gravel nests is thought to be correlated with a particular suite of behavioural and physiological traits that correspond to the stress coping style of the individual. Among these traits, aggressiveness, dominance and resilience to stress, are potentially interesting to exploit in aquaculture production. In the present study a series of experiments were performed, with the purpose of characterising behavioural, metabolic and production related traits in rainbow trout juveniles from different emergence fractions. Newly hatched rainbow trout were sorted according to their emergence time from an artificial nest. The early, middle, and late fractions were retained and assessed for their physiological...

Manipulation of dietary fatty acids and effects on rainbow trout fry performance Organic Eprints
Lund, Ivar; Lazado, Carlo C.; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The Organic Regulation of fish farming states strong limitations on the sourcing of protein and fat (oil) ingredients in organic feed, i.e. aiming to phase out fishmeal (FM) and fish oil (FO) obtained from wild fish stocks and this may lead to a higher inclusion of other ingredients, especially of vegetable origin including proteins i.e. soybean; wheat; corn; barley; cottonseed; canola and peas, and oils i.e.: soybean; canola; linseed; sunflower; palm oil a.o. (Gatlin et al., 2007). A complete substitution of (FM) by vegetable protein alternatives may, however, lead to reduced performance in salmonids. Nutritional deficiencies and lack of essential amino acids; high dietary levels of antinutrients/ carbohydrates are typical factors leading to lower feed...

Stress and disease resilience differences related to emergence time for first feeding in farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Organic Eprints
Gesto, Manuel; Madsen, Lone; Andersen, Nikolaj R.; Jokumsen, Alfred.
Salmonid individuals show a relatively high variability in the time required to abandon the gravel nest where they hatch, the so-called "emergence time". Different behavioral and physiological traits have been shown to be associated to that emergence time in wild salmonids. In general, early- and late-emerging fish have traits resembling those of proactive and reactive stress coping styles, respectively. Proactive fish are considered to be more resilient to stress and probably to disease, so it was hypothesized that fish with different emergence time have different ability to resist repeated episodes of stress without suffering deleterious effects on their welfare or health status. In this study, rainbow trout eyed eggs were hatched and larvae were...

Flere økologiske fisk Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.

Jokumsen, Alfred.

Ynglens robusthed vil blive målt i forhold til ynglens swim-up adfærd (first feeding) og performance under opvæksten.

Boosting the quality of organic trout fry Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
RobustFish will strengthen the development of Danish organic trout production. According to the EU Regulation on Organic Aquaculture, the fish production shall exclusively be based on organic fry from 2016. Particularly, in organic farming, medication is only allowed within very strict limits. Therefore, the robustness of the fry to diseases is crucial. Especially, this concerns the most serious trout fry disease in Danish aquaculture, Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome (RTFS). The robustness of the fry seems to be related to larval developmental rate and to the dietary content of specific Ω-3 fatty acids (HUFAs). Stress and RTFS tests are going to be performed to investigate if these two factors can be included in strategies to increase the robustness of the fry....

Fatty acid manipulation of rainbow trout fry Organic Eprints
Lund, Ivar; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The EU regulation (EC 710/2009) on Organic Aquaculture states that the principles of organic rearing shall include the whole trout production cycle, i.e. the fish production shall be based on organic fry. The Organic Regulation of fish farming states strong limitations on the sourcing of protein and fat ingredients in organic feed, i.e. aiming to phase out fish oil obtained from wild fish stocks and this may lead to a higher inclusion of other oils, especially vegetable oils as these are widely used. The main difference between vegetable oils (VO) and fish oils (FO) is related to the content of so called long chain essential n-3 (previously denoted Ω-3) and n-6 (previously denoted Ω-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC- PUFAs). These are main constituents...

Boom in Production of Organic Line Mussels in Denmark Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
Organic farming of line mussels makes a significant footprint in the development of the Danish Aquaculture sector, targeting 10 percent of the production being organic by 2018. Currently nine production units have been approved for a total production of some 3,500 t/yr. Danish production of line mussels takes place in the Limfjorden (North West Jutland), where the main producer currently is Seafood Limfjord in cooperation with the mussel processing company Vildsund Blue in Nykøbing Mors. Mussels are farmed on lines and in big socks and, because they are reared closer to the surface than wild mussels, more algae and other seston is available to support growth. Naturally occurring mussel spat settle on the lines each year and harvesting is done by boat....

Horse bean, pea and rape protein and flax seed oil in feed for organic trout Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
Organic horse bean, pea and rape may partly replace the fish meal protein, and flax seed oil may replace the fish oil in feed for organic rainbow trout. These are the most recent results from the ORAQUA project. Fish meal and fish oil are unique sources to protein and oil in fish feed due to the optimum content of amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids. However, as these resources are globally very limited, the ORAQUA project is focusing alternative organic plant crops in the feed for organic trout.
