Direct drilling has been studied by MTT Agrifood Research Finland since the 1980s, but conclusions here are mainly based on field trials on clay soils in 2000s. Differences in amount and quality of yield from ploughed and no-till soil vary between years, fields and species. Timing and implementation of drilling in no-till soil is especially challenging. Oat did grow and yield more reliably than other spring cetreals when direct drilled. The protein content of spring cereal grains was low in direct drilling. |

Direct drilling and reduced tillage: - may increase T-2/HT-2 -producers, especially on oats - may decrease DON-producers, especially F. culmorum > is it long lasting effect? - an increase F. avenaceum infection in humid growing seasons - effect on F. culmorum - less f. poae -infection especially on oats -effect on F. graminearum: -not detected, the species is quite common but perithecia are not often detected -F. graminearumis most likely increasing-changes the situation. Control of mycotoxin producers in reduced tillage: -fungicide treatments not effective to control Fusariumand mycotoxins -crop rotation important -resistant cultivars |

Rikkakasvit aiheuttavat merkittävää satohaittaa luonnonmukaisessa peltoviljelyssä. Yleisesti rikka-kasvien hallinta perustuu luomutiloilla mekaaniseen maanmuokkaukseen, josta kuitenkin aiheutuu myös negatiivisia ympäristövaikutuksia kuten maan rakenteen heikkenemistä ja ravinteiden huuh-toutumista. Peitekasvien viljely on mielenkiintoinen vaihtoehto luomutiloilla rikkakasvien hallintaan mekaanisen maanmuokkauksen sijaan. Samalla toteutustavasta riippuen peitekasveja voidaan hyö-dyntää biologisessa typensidonnassa, ravinteiden huuhtoutumisen vähentämisessä, eroosion estossa ja maan kasvukunnon ylläpidossa. Peitekasvien käyttö rikkakasvien hallinnassa perustuu lisääntyvään kilpailuun valosta, ravinteista ja vedestä. Osalla kasveista on myös allelopatisia... |

Cover crops can reduce leaching and erosion, introduce variability into crop rotations and fix nitrogen (N) for use by the main crops. In Finland, undersowing is a suitable method for establishing cover crops in cereals. The effect of annual undersowing on soil nitrate N was studied at two sites. Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.), a mixture of red clover and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.), and westerwold ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. var. westerwoldicum) were undersown in spring cereals during six successive seasons, and a pure stand of cereal was grown in two years after that. In all years, the soil nitrate N was measured in late autumn, and in addition in different times of the season in last four years.... |

The disadvantages associated with invariable cereal cropping, concern about nutrient leaching and the price of nitrogen (N) fertilizer have increasingly become the subjects of discussion during recent decades. An undersown crop, which grows together with a main crop and post-harvest, could address such disadvantages. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge needed to develop undersowing for Finnish conditions in the interests of optimizing cereal production and meeting environmental goals. Studies were made on the effects of undersown species and management practices on biomass and N yield of undersown crops, grain yield of spring cereals and soil nitrate levels. In total, 17 plant species were undersown in spring cereals during the field... |
