The effect of different fertilisers on hygienic quality of lettuce Organic Eprints
Rattler, Sabine; Thiel, Barbara; Köpke, Ulrich.
Abstract – The effect of different fertiliser types (cal-cium ammonium nitrate, fresh farmyard manure, composted farmyard manure and nettle extract) on the hygienic quality of fresh and washed lettuce was tested in two trials in summer 2004 and 2005. The hygienic quality was described by total aerobic bacte-rial count and level of coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, Enterobacteriaceae. No Salmonella Enteritidis was detected in any sample. E. coli was isolated independent of the fertiliser type in low concentrations. The total aerobic bacterial count, the levels of Enterobacteriaceae and coliform bacteria tended to be lower after application of mineral fertil-iser but on a very low level. The washing process had no significant...

QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF INTEGRATED, ORGANIC AND BIODYNAMIC WINE USING IMAGE FORMING METHODS Organic Eprints
Fritz, Jürgen; Athmann, Miriam; Meissner, Georg; Köpke, Ulrich.
Nine encoded wine samples from a German long-term field trial on the comparison of different cultivation systems were examined with the image forming methods biocrystallization, capillary dynamolysis and circular chromatography. The images of the encoded samples were i. differentiated into three groups of images with similar form expression, ii. characterised as ‘fresh – aged’ based on a catalogue of reference images, iii. ranked (according to the quality characterization) and iv. assigned to the different cultivation systems (classified). Images gained with samples from integrated farming showed more structures indicating enhanced aging compared with the samples from organic and especially from biodynamic origin. Based on these observations, a correct...

Yield and quality of potato tubers: Effects of different intensity and kind of manuring (biodynamic or organic) Organic Eprints
Neuhoff, Daniel; Schulz, Dirk Gerhard; Köpke, Ulrich.
Biodynamic farming is the oldest organic farming movement in Germany. Since Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s “Course on Agriculture” held in 1924, the number of biodynamic farmers in Germany has grown continuously, with 1,317 farmers currently producing on 47,592 ha. One of the most distinctive aspects of biodynamic farming is the use of the so-called biodynamic preparations, which are applied in homeopathic doses. Biodynamic preparations are supposed to improve plant growth and food quality, minimising natural variations. This paper deals with investigations of influences of these preparations and increased manure application on potato yield and tuber quality. The results are drawn from extensive research on organic potato production carried out by several institutes...

Status Quo der Biodiversitätsbewertung in Ökobilanzen Organic Eprints
Geier, Vanessa; Meier, Matthias; Köpke, Ulrich.
During the last years the demand and use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for calculating and comparing the ecological impacts of agricultural products has increased. However, within LCA important environmental impacts of agriculture, for instance biodiversity, soil quality or animal welfare are considered inadequately or stay unaccounted. In the case of biodiversity agriculture is considered as the main driver for the worldwide biodiversity loss. Thus, biodiversity cannot be neglected in future agricultural LCAs. Even though there is no widely accepted approach yet, a lot of research has been undertaken to solve the question how biodiversity can be assessed in the LCA framework. Within a literature review eleven studies with biodiversity assessment...

Rates of photosynthesis and transpiration of spring wheat and barley as influenced by fodder precrops and their cropping period Organic Eprints
Küpper, Paul Martin; Perkons, Ute; Pries, Charlotte; Antar, Philipp Martin; Kautz, Timo; Köpke, Ulrich.
Perennial fodder cropping as compared to rotations including annual ploughing can increase the number of medium and large sized biopores in the subsoil. This can result in potentially facilitated root growth followed by increased accessibility of water in the subsoil. Additional plant-available water can enable stands to cope with dry periods in early summer, which will take place more often in future due to climate change. In this context we investigated whether crop species or cropping period of forage cropping influenced rates of photosynthesis and transpiration as indicators for water availability of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).

Ökobilanz integrierter und ökologischer Apfelerzeugung in Hamburg Organic Eprints
Geier, Uwe; Frieben, Bettina; Gutsche, Volkmar; Köpke, Ulrich.
In 1997-1999 a life-cycle assessment of organic-extensive, organic-intensive and integrated apple production in Hamburg was carried out. The investigation was based on an analysis of 7 organic and 7 integrated farms in Hamburg and the surrounding area. The life-cycle assessment included 12 impact categories. The functional unit (1 kg apple or 1 ha farm land) differed depending on the impact categories. Compared to integrated production, organic production gave advantages in the impact categories ecotoxicity, human toxicity, drinking water protection, biodiversity and landscape image, whereas integrated production showed better results in the environmental effects that are caused by energy use. The investigation revealed potential for optimisation of...

Organic agriculture can and should play an important role in solving future challenges in producing food. The low level of external inputs combined with knowledge on sustainablity minimizes environmental contamination and can help to produce more food for more people without negatively impacting our environment. Organic agriculture not only includes farming as a production practice but it also includes processing, trade and consumption. Nevertheless, Organic agriculture must always evolve to overcome emerging challenges. Science-based knowledge attained through dedicated research is required to strengthen organic food and farming as a means to solve future challenges. In 2010, a global discussion about Organic 3.0 was initiated to address current problems...

Effects of weed management practices on enteric pathogen transfer into lettuce (lactuca sativa var. capitata) Organic Eprints
Fischer-Arndt, Meike; Neuhoff, Daniel; Tamm, Lucius; Köpke, Ulrich.
We evaluated the effect of using farmyard manure (FYM) in combination with four weed control techniques on the hygienic quality of lettuce. Treatments with six replications included the application of fresh FYM on the soil combined with hand-hoeing (assumed high-risk) and fresh FYM incorporation combined with plastic mulch (assumed low risk). The experiment was repeated twice per season over two years at Bonn University, Germany. The amounts of enteric bacteria in all treatments were within the acceptable limits. Enterococcus was detected in the majority of the samples in concentrations up to 3.7 log10 CFU/g. The Escherichia coli contents of lettuce ranged between n.d. and 103 CFU/g. There was no consistent effect suggesting a specific risk linked to one...

Comparing intensive, extensified and organic grassland farming in southern Germany by process life cycle assessment Organic Eprints
Haas, Guido; Wetterich, Frank; Köpke, Ulrich.
To reduce the environmental burden of agriculture, suitable methods to comprehend and assess the impact on natural resources are needed. One of the methods considered is the life cycle assessment (LCA) method, which was used to assess the environmental impacts of 18 grassland farms in three different farming intensities - intensive, extensified, and organic - in the Allgäu region in southern Germany. Extensified and organic compared with intensive farms could reduce negative effects in the abiotic impact categories of energy use, global warming potential and ground water mainly by renouncing mineral nitrogen fertilizer. Energy consumption of intensive farms was 19.1 GJ/ha and 2.7 GJ/t milk, of extensified and organic farms 8.7 and 5.9 GJ/ha along with 1.3...

Athmann, Miriam; Fetscher, Johannes; Zemke, Daniel; Kautz, Timo; Köpke, Ulrich.
Biopores have been shown to be enriched with plant available nutrients as compared to the surrounding bulk soil and therefore are considered hot spots for the nutrient acquisition especially in the otherwise nutrient-poor subsoil. As a result of colonization of biopores by earthworms, pore walls are enriched with nutrients. In this study, a first attempt was made to assess the influence of earthworm abundance on both structural pore wall characteristics as assessed with in situ endoscopy and on pore wall C and N contents. Higher earthworm density resulted in higher N contents and significantly higher C contents in biopore walls as compared to the surrounding bulk soil, regardless whether they showed visible earthworm coatings. In the treatment with lower...

Controlling weeds with natural phytotoxic Substances (NPS) in direct seeded soybean Organic Eprints
Giepen, Michael; Neto, Francisco Skora; Köpke, Ulrich.
Field trials on weed control in direct seeding with the use of natural phytotoxic ingredients (NPI) were carried out from 2011 to 2013 at the Agricultural Research Institute of Paraná state, Brazil (IAPAR). Soybean was direct seeded into residues of precrop black oats (\textit{Avena strigosa)}. In a split-plot trial the whole-plot treatment consisted of two different weed densities. In the eight subplot treatments the effects of "natural phytotoxic ingredients" (NPI) on weed control was evaluated. The two NPI formulations used in the experiment contained 50 L/ha Pine Oil (formulation ``Pine Oil'') or 50 L/ha d-Limonene (formulation ``Limonene''), both combined with 50 kg/ha NaCl. These formulations were applied once, twice, or three times in a weekly...

Farm gate nutrient balances of organic dairy farms at different intensity levels in Germany Organic Eprints
Haas, Guido; Deittert, Christine; Köpke, Ulrich.
Organic farms are characterized as low external input agro-ecosystems. Currently, some organic dairy farmers feed higher amounts of concentrates and succulent feed, some of which is purchased, to increase the dairy performance of their cows. To assess the environ¬mental impact of this practice, nutrient balances at the farm-gate level of 26 organic dairy farms located in two different regions in Germany were compiled and analysed. The farms are characterised by different production features and feeding intensity levels (0 - 2.72 t DM of concentrates per cow and year, which was 0 - 378 g kg-1 milk) yielding 5,150 - 8,790 kg milk on average per cow and year. The area- and product- (milk) related farm-gate nutrient budgets for P and K are almost balanced...

Sproß - und Wurzelentwicklung von Getreide bei reduzierter Grundbodenbearbeitung im Ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Vakali, Christina; Köpke, Ulrich.
In a field trial established in 1994 by the foundation „Stiftung Ökologie und Landbau“, different primary tillage systems are being tested on their influence on root and shootgrowth of cereals. The tillage implements are : mouldboard plough, two layer plough and layer cultivator. Investigations oriented on soil physical parameters ( e.g. aggregate stability ), root parameters ( e.g. root-length-density ), shoot growth ( e.g. dry matter, yields) and laboratory analysis ( e.g., P, K Ct/Nt contents ). These parameters were also tested for the weeds, that can strongly compete with the crops, especially in reduced tillage systems. The results of the investigations combined with knowledge obtained from previous work and literature are being interpreted in order...

Pflanzenbauliche Nutzung von Bioporen im Unterboden Organic Eprints
Perkons, Ute; Küpper, Paul Martin; Kautz, Timo; Köpke, Ulrich.
Biopores act as pathways for the roots of following crops to access water and nutrients stored in the subsoil. Their role for nutrient management is especially important under the conditions of Organic Agriculture. In a field trial on Haplic Luvisol, chicory (Cichorium intybus L., tap root system) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea, fibrous root system) were grown as precrops. Effects on biopore density, root-length density (RLD), leaf area index (LAI), biomass, transpiration and photosynthesis of following winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were measured. Biopore density and RLD declined with soil depth. In all depth levels biopore density was higher after chicory in comparison to fescue. Between 95 and 125 cm soil depth the difference was significant....
