Organic plant protection can be supported by diagnostic aids for pest organisms. A concept for a user-friendly, scientifically founded diagnostic aid for agriculturally relevant pest organisms is presented, which is based on a flexible filter structure and conclusive images. To provide practical information on biology and regulation options along with the diagnosis, recent scientific results and market availability of regulation options in organic farming are being reviewed. Informationsbeschaffung über ökologischen Pflanzenschutz bedeutet besonders für vielseitige oder neu umgestellte Betriebe einen enormen Aufwand. Ein Konzept für eine anwenderfreundliche Bestimmungshilfe für wichtige Schadorganismen im Ökolandbau wird vorgestellt, das auf einer simplen und flexible Filterstruktur aufbaut. Ein Review aktueller Forschungsergebnisse und der Marktverfügbarkeit und Zulassung ökologischer Regulierungsmöglichkeiten fließt in die Informationsbereitstellung ein. Bisher wurden die Bereiche zum Vorratsschutz, Ackerbau und Beikrautregulierung veröffentlicht, ein Bereich zum Obstbau erscheint 2018.

Mixed cropping systems for biological control of weeds and pests in organic oilseed crops Organic Eprints

Agricultural advantages of mixed cropping are gained by biological effects like light competition, offering weed-suppressing capacities or by diversification of plant covers to break development cycles of pests. In a two-year project on mixed cropping with organic oilseed crops these effects were measured. It was found that weeds can be efficiently suppressed in organic linseed (Linum usitatissivum) in crop combinations with wheat (Triticum aestivum) or false flax (Camelina sativa). But linseed development was strictly limited. Also in organic pea production (Pisum sativum) the introduction of mixtures with the oil crop false flax led to a significant decrease of weed population. Efficacy of biological insecticides to control the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotasara decemlineata) in organic farming Organic Eprints

The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotasara decemlineata Say) is one of the most important pests on potatoes (Solanum tuberosum). In the present study, we compared the efficacy of three biological insecticides – Neem (NeemAzal-T/S), pyrethrum/rapeseed oil (Spruzit Neu) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis (Novodor FC) – against this pest in field trials conducted from 2005 to 2007. The combined and temporarily shifted application of neem and B.t.t. reduced significantly the number of beetle larvae and the percentage of defoliation due to larval feeding, and increased the potato yield considerably. Growing media for organic farming are increasingly attacked by fungus gnats (Sciaridae) because of their increased microbial activity. Within this study a new method was developed to assess the level of infestation of growing media by the fungus gnat Bradysia difformis (Frey, 1948). The method is based on a comparison of any growing media with two standard substrates. The test method provides the ability to classify growing media in infestation risk classes (low, medium, high) and to test suitable additives, pesticides and bio-control organisms on the fungus gnat infestation.

Minimising strategies for copper pesticides in organic potato cultivation Organic Eprints

It can be stated that also in future a successful copper minimization strategy based on the use of all preventive measures, the further reduction of copper application rates and the development of alternative pesticides. First results of the EU project COFREE (Copper Replacement Strategies) have shown, that the high safety effect of copper-based products is difficult to achieve by alternative products. The short, medium and long-term measures for the implementation of copper minimization strategy are described in this paper. The future development potential of the measures to minimize copper in organic potato production is assessed.

Stock pests can cause severe damage to agricultural products. In addition, it is sometimes difficult to determine the pest and know what measures would be most helpful.. The online tool helps determine the pest and provides information on its biology and suitable measures. It contains data on more than 40 storage pests, and it is being expanded continuously. Der schädlingsreduzierende Effekt einer Raps-Rübsen-Mischsaat mit 10% Rübsen wurde im Vergleich zu einer Rapsreinsaat untersucht. Darüberhinaus wurden naturstofflichen Pflanzenschutzmittel wie Pyrethrum/Rapsöl(Spruzit® Neu), Spinosad (SpinTor), SiO2/Sonnenblumenöl und Gesteinsmehl/Wasser auf ihre schädlingsreduzierende Wirkung hin getestet. Der Raps der Mischsaat wies einen höheren Befall mit Stängelrüsslern (Ceutorhynchus spp.) gegenüber dem Raps der Reinsaat auf. Die erfolgreiche Regulierung des Rapsglanzkäfers in der Raps-Rübsen-Mischsaat resultierte aus der höheren Attraktivität der Rübsenpflanze durch ihren Entwicklungsvorsprung. The Colorado Potato Beetle is one of the most important pests of potatoes. The effect of various plant protection products based on neem (NeemAzal-T/S), pyrethrum/rape oil (Spruzit Neu) and Bacillus thuringiensis - B.t.t. (Novodor FC) against this pest has been compared in a field experiment from 2004 until 2006. The combined application of neem and B.t.t.-product have reduced the number of Colorado Potato Beetle larvae as well as the losses of plant material by feed of the beetle larvae significantly. In three years of field experiments the application of pyrethrum/rape oil has shown no significant effect to reduce the number of Colorado Potato Beetles.

A method for testing the efficacy of products which improve the resistance of plants was developed in the Julius Kühn-Institute. The susceptible radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivar ´Saxa 3` was infected with Peronospora parasitica isolated in the field. Different plant resistance improvers (PRI) like plant or algal extracts were tested compared to aqua dest. as control and ß-aminobutyric acid (BABA) as a standard. PRI were sprayed twice on intact plants (BBCH 10: Cotyledons completely unfolded; growing point or true leaf initial visible). 24 h, 48 h or 72 h after the last application with PRI, the plants were inoculated with P. parasitica. 10 to 14 days after inoculation, the concentration of spore suspension from cotyledons was determined.
