Nine species of Lepidochitona from the NE Atlantic and adjacent seas are described, two of which are new to science: L. monterosatoi from the Mediterranean Sea, and L. iberica from Ria de Arosa, NW Spain. The taxa Middendorffia Dall, 1882, and Mopaliella Thiele, 1909, are rejected and synonymized with Lepidochitona Gray, 1821. Ischnochiton stroemfelti Bergenhayn, 1931, is recognized as an intermediate form between Ischnochiton Gray, 1847, and Lepidochitona Gray, 1821, classed with the latter genus by the authors on account of several arguments. |

The late Eugène Leloup examined samples from five stations of the Benthédi-Expédition, 1977, in the North of the Mozambique Channel, containing four species of chitons, two of which proved to be new to science. The material here discussed, coming from eighteen Benthédistations, proved to contain fourteen species, among which the four previously reported by Leloup (1981), and two hitherto unknown, here described as Leptochiton (Leptochiton) gloriosus spec, nov. and Ischnochiton (Ischnochiton) crassus spec. nov. The Réunion material came from nine stations and contains five species of chitons, two of which are new, viz. Leptochiton (Leptochiton) kurnilatus spec. nov. and Ischnochiton (Stenosemus) vitreolus spec. nov. |

Four new species of chitons (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) are described, viz Leptochiton (L.) dispersus and L. (L.) permodestus from Transkei, L. (L.) meiringae from the eastern Cape Province, S Africa (note 11) and Ischnochiton (Stenosemus) vanbellei from the Mediterranean Sea (note 14). New records are given for little known species, such as Leptochiton (L.) chariessa (Barnard, 1963) (note 11), Ischnochiton (I.) obtusus Carpenter in Pilsbry, 1893 (note 12), Leptochiton (L.) lineatus (Nierstrasz, 1905), L. (L.) rissoi (Nierstrasz, 1905), Loricella oviformis (Nierstrasz, 1905), and Placiphorella albitestae Is. Taki, 1954 (note 13). New synonyms: Squamophora Nierstrasz, 1905, and Componochiton Milne, 1963 = Loricella Pilsbry, 1893; Paricoplax profundior Dell,... |

In June 1951 Dr. A. R. Ranjha of the Zoological Survey Department, Government of Pakistan, at Karachi, sent me 26 samples of Loricata, together 46 specimens, preserved in 75% rectified spirit, all, except one, from the rockey beach of Manora Island, about two miles West off the Karachi coast, where they had been collected from the tidal area at low tide. The samples were taken at different dates and by several collectors or collecting parties. There are four species and one variety among the material, of which three species and the variety are supposed to be new. Chiton iatricus Winckworth, 1930 Winckworth, R., 1930. The present paper deals with an important Danish paper on the Polyplacophora, published in 1797 by Lorentz Spengler: Udförlig Beskrivelse over det mangeskallede Konkylie-Slaegt, af Linnaeus kaldet Chiton; med endeel nye Arter og Varieteter. -Skrivter af Naturhistorie-Selskabet, 4e Bind, Ie Hefte, VI: 62-103, Tab. VI (Kiöbenhavn). In order to make this historical paper accessible to students of the group, a translation (by Dr J. Knudsen, with the assistance of the late Mrs A. Volsoe) of the original 18th century Danish text into modern English is here presented. A considerable part of the material in the "Museo Spengleriano", on which Spengler based his descriptions, is still extant, being held now in the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen. The... |

The present monograph has been drawn up chiefly from material collected by Dr. P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK, secretary of the Foundation for Scientific Research in Surinam and the Netherlands Antilles, during his trips to the Caribbean in 1936/37, 1948/49, 1955, 1963, and 1967. This collection comprises about 1500 specimens of Polyplacophora belonging to 21 species, among which 4 are new to science. As up till now no comprehensive work on the chitons of the Caribbean area has been published the author made it his task not only to draw up a report on specimens collected by Dr. HUMMELINCK but also to give a general review of all the species of Polyplacophora occurring in the Caribbean Province. |
