Introduction The vast majority of apple production in Europe takes place in intensive orchards, this implies the need for intensive capital investment for support structures which then have to be used for a number of generations of trees. Consequently new orchards have to be replanted in the same place as previous plots. This causes soil sickness or yield decline of which “replant disease” is the main biological component. Resulting yield losses are difficult to assess; a recent study in South Tyrol, where 12% of total EU apple is produced, showed that growth reduction can vary from 20 to 60% in replanted orchard compared to fallow control. Das Ziel des Projektes EcoOrchard ist die praxisnahe Entwicklung geeigneter Strategien und Maßnahmen zur Förderung der funktionellen Agro-Biodiversität im ökologischen Apfelanbau. An dem Projekt sind neun europäische Länder beteiligt und es wird im Rahmen des CoreOrganic Plus-Programmes bis Ende 2017 gefördert. 2015 wurden in sieben Ländern (Schweden, Dänemark, Belgien, Deutschland, Polen, Schweiz, Italien) auf ökologisch bewirtschafteten Obstbetrieben Freilandversuche zur Praxiseignung mehrjähriger, standortangepasster Blühstreifen in den Fahrgassen angelegt. This paper is a paper oriented to Italian growers . It aims at disseminating the main findings of a study performed within Work Package 1 of BIO-INCROP project that has already been published on Applied Soil Ecology. This short paper presents a survey which refers to three apple growing areas of Italy, Germany and Austria. The study on soil samples taken from multigeneration apple orchards of those areas was performed with plant growth assay in pot at Laimburg Research Center (Bolzano Italy), while root-colonizing fungi and nematodes were evaluated in specialized laboratories. The main findings are described with the support of pictures and tables showing the plant growth response in relation to root colonization of rootstock plantlets.

In organic production only organic fertilizers and soil conditioners can be used to supply the soil with nitrogen. The mineralization of these products is slow and so there can be problems with the supply of nitrogen, when the demand of the plants is high. The supply of nitrogen from organic products depends on the speed of their mineralization which is primarily influenced by the composition and formulation of their raw material. EBIO-Network: a web-based platform for knowledge sharing on functional agrobiodiversity in organic apple production. Organic Eprints

The web-based platform "EBIO-Network" (European Biodiversity Orchards Network),created within the framework of the CoreOrganic plus project EcoOrchard, will provide an interactive communication tool between stakeholders in European organic fruit production at different levels (practice, science, advisory etc.). The website will offer the opportunity to share, extract and use stakeholder knowledge in Europe in a participatory approach. As an outcome of this ongoing exchange, the aim is to provide technical information how to create, keep and assess functional agrobiodiversity (FAB) in apple production.

Auxin-mediated relationships between apple plants and root inhabiting fungi: impact on root pathogens and potentialities of growth-promoting populations. Organic Eprints

This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between plant hosts and root-colonizing fungi recovered from apple orchard soils that had been replanted over multiple generations. Functional relationships of three groups of filamentous fungi (Ceratobasidium sp., Cylindrocarpon-like group and Fusarium acuminatum) with apple rootstocks were evaluated in plant growth bioassays. The Cylindrocarpon-like group and Ceratobasidium sp. showed a relationship with the host plant varying from pathogenic to commensal through to mutualistic for the latter group, while that of F. acuminatum tended to be mutualistic. Seven fungal isolates of each group, which induced the highest plant growth in bioassays, were evaluated for auxin (IAA) and gibberellin (GA3 and GA4)...

Replant problems in South Tyrol: role of fungal pathogens and microbial populations in conventional and organic apple orchards Organic Eprints

South Tyrol, the main Italian apple growing area, is characterised by an highly intensive soil cultivation. Previous investigations shows the existence of replant disorders although it has not been evaluated which are the main causes. A survey has been carried out in this area with two main aims I) to evaluate the role of soil borne pathogens in apple replant disease and II) to evaluate the effect of soil management toward soil borne pathogens causing replant diseases. The experimental sites were chosen in order to obtain three couples of contiguous conventional and organic apple orchards. The “Rodenator”: an efficient device for controlling field mice and root voles? Organic Eprints

Field mice (Microtus arvalis), wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and root voles (Arvicola terrestis) constitute a big threat to the organic apple orchards in South Tyrol. The use of rodenticides on the fields is not allowed in organic farming. The fruit growers rely on the help of different natural predators. If populations increase, the possibility of trapping and gasifying with equipment which produces carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide remain. Both methods are problematic. Trapping requires skill and time. Gasifying is not unproblematic to the health of the user.
