Apple scab control with grapefruit seed extract: no alternative to chemical fungicides Organic Eprints
Spitaler, Renate; Marschall, Klaus; Zidorn, Christian; Kelderer, Markus; Zelger, Roland; Stuppner, Hermann.
The growth inhibiting effect of four commercially available grapefruit seed extracts on the causal organism of apple scab Venturia inaequalis was tested. Germination of the conidia of Venturia inaequalis was pronouncedly inhibited by all tested extracts. The commercial products were analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. All samples contained at least one preserving agent. These substances were identified as either benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, methyl parabene or propyl parabene. Freshly prepared extracts from seeds of grapefruits (Citrus paradisi) did not inhibit the germination of Venturia inaequalis. It was therefore concluded that the antifungal effect of grapefruit seed extracts is...

Innovative design and management to boost functional biodiversity of organic orchards Organic Eprints

Organic fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and most important: many organic fruit growers would prefer not to use any pesticide at all. Growing flowers in order to gain more natural enemies, and hence less pests is a technique called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). Ongoing research in this CORE Organic Plus project aims to collect existing knowledge and generate new knowledge in order to use FAB successfully in orchards.

Ryania Speciosa: an insecticide for organic orchards? Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Sgarbossa, Manuela; Schönweger, Gudrun; Elias, Ellen; Roland, Zelger; Santer, Johann; Stuppner, Hermann.
Ryania speciosa is a grove belonging to the family Flacourtiacea, located in tropical climates in Central- and South- America. The Indigenous population used the plant, which contains toxic alkaloids, against cockroaches. In the forties the ground wood was used as insecticide against different pests. In the first version of annex 2b from the EC regulation 2092/91, Ryania was still listed, but it was subsequently cancelled due to its lack of registration as a pesticide in any European country. In organic farming, only a few insecticides are allowed, but in orchards there is a permanent need to control larvae such as coddling moth, etc. The Italian Ministry of Agriculture initiated a survey to investigate the possibility of developing an 'organic'...

Pflanzenverträglichkeit von verschiedenen Schwefelpräparaten auf Braeburn bei Behandlungen mit dem Sprüher oder mit der Oberkronenberegnung Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Casera, Claudio; Lardschneider, Ewald.
The apple variety Braeburn is very popular among the organic apple growers in South Tyrol. Braeburn brings high and regular yields and good prices at the north European fruit and vegetable market. Braeburn is quite susceptible to scab and mildew. To regulate this latter disease the organic orchardists use mainly sulphur products. Braeburn however is sensitive to sulphur treatments. Mainly during summer at high tem-peratures the leaves of Braeburn treated with sulphur develop a yellowish colour and necrotic spots. A field-trial was carried out for 2 years to investigate which sulphur formulations and application techniques give less phytotoxic problems to leaves and fruits of the apple variety Braeburn. The results show only small dif-ferences between the...

Tree shading: an efficient method to control alternate bearing? Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Lardschneider, Ewald; Casera, Claudio.
Conventional and integrated fruit growers, but not organic producers, have the possibility to use thinning agents (e.g. benzyl adenine), which allow crop regulation at a relatively late stage (10-16 mm fruit size). A few surveys have shown that by reducing net photosynthesis after blossom, June fruit drop increases. This could be an interesting new approach for organic apple orchards. Since 2003, different trials have been carried out at the Laimburg Research Station on the variety Golden Delicious rootstock M9 to devise a method for practical use by fruit growers. Unfortunately, there are still several constraints to the practical application of the shading method, not least because it does not sufficiently reduce alternate fruit bearing in the...

Influence of fungicides used in organic orchards on the net-photosynthesis of apple trees Organic Eprints
Mittersteiner, Roland; Kelderer, Markus.

Kelderer, Markus; Mateazzi, Aldo; Casera, Claudio.
K-phosphite is very efficient against several plant diseases. Nevertheless at the moment there is no official registration in Europe as a plant protection material. In conventional winegrowing K-phosphite is used in different countries to regulate the main disease ‘Plasmopora viticola’ under the disguise of a foliar fertilizer or a plant strengthener. In organic apple production only a few fungicides to regulate scab are available. In addition, copper products are limited by European and national legislations. The discussion about K-phosphite for organic farming points always at the problem of synthetic residues on the edible parts of the vegetables. The aim of this field-trial carried out during the season of 2005 was to assess the residues on apples...

Design, implementation and management of perennial flower strips to promote functional agrobiodiversity in organic apple orchards: A pan-European study Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Cahenzli, Fabian; Steinemann, Beatrice; Jamar, Laurent; Chor Bjørn, Mona; Porcel, Mario; Tasin, Marco; Telfser, Josef; Kelderer, Markus; Sigsgaard, Lene.
Orchards, as intensive cropping systems, often have low diversity of plant species, which limits the promotion of natural enemies for pest control. The implementation of agri-environmental schemes, such as flower strips, could enhance biological control. We developed perennial, multifunctional flower strips with native plant species. In the second and third year after sowing, plant diversity and ground cover between flower strips (FS) in the drive alleys and the spontaneous orchard vegetation in control plots (Cont) were compared in 19 experimental blocks of eight organic apple orchards in six European countries. On average 73.7% of the sown plant species were established and plant diversity of FS was on average 43% higher than in Cont. Multivariate...

Perennial flower strips for pest control in organic apple orchards - A pan-European study Organic Eprints

In many crops, the intensive use of pesticides causes major problems both for the environment and for natural ecosystem services. Apple is Europe's most frequently produced orchard fruit, requiring high pesticide input to combat the most important apple insect pests, Dysaphis plantaginea (Passerini) and Cydia pomonella (L.). Here we sought to control these pests by promoting natural enemies using sown perennial flower strips. We trialled these in the alleyways of organic apple orchards in seven European countries. Visual assessments over two years revealed a higher number of natural enemies on plant parts, and specifically in D. plantaginea colonies on trees, in flower strip plots than on trees in control plots with standard orchard vegetation. Trees in...

Erste Ergebnisse mit dem Einsatz von K-hydrogencarbonat in Südtirol Organic Eprints
Kelderer, Markus; Casera, Claudio; Lardschneider, Ewald.
In the EC at the moment only cupper and sulphur products are allowed to regulate a multiplicity of diseases in different vegetable crops. On the other hand it is well know that both have also negative side effects on beneficial organisms and the soil. Since many years researches are looking for alternatives to reduce and substitute the use of the mentioned products. Bicarbonates are substances which were pointes out for many years. They are present in nature and were used in the past in organic farming. Until now there was no registration for them in the EC as plant protection materials. There is a palpable possibility that it would change in future, what will open the possibility to apply for the introduction of potassium bicarbonate in annex 2B of the...
