The six products, Armicarb, Vitisan, lime sulphur, Caso, Calce Fiocco and Ulmasud were tested for their ability to control downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) on grapevine (Vitis vinifera) in order to find effective alternatives to copper, a heavy metal that is commonly used as a fungicide in organic viticulture. Each product was applied to potted grapevines at i) 40°h (degree hours) and ii) 80°h after inoculation (ai) of the pathogen. These so-called stop-sprays were tested on plants that received two different P. viticola inoculum rates. The formulated potassium bicarbonate product Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence and severity similar to or better than the copper hydroxide treatment. Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence... |

In the EC at the moment only cupper and sulphur products are allowed to regulate a multiplicity of diseases in different vegetable crops. On the other hand it is well know that both have also negative side effects on beneficial organisms and the soil. Since many years researches are looking for alternatives to reduce and substitute the use of the mentioned products. Bicarbonates are substances which were pointes out for many years. They are present in nature and were used in the past in organic farming. Until now there was no registration for them in the EC as plant protection materials. There is a palpable possibility that it would change in future, what will open the possibility to apply for the introduction of potassium bicarbonate in annex 2B of the... |

Mainly in Anglo-Saxon countries (USA, New Zealand etc.) the market for organic agriculture inputs offers different natural substances for the use as bio-herbicides. The most important ingredients of these products are acetic acid, citric acid and clove-extracts (eugenol) in the case of post-emergence herbicides and corn-gluten in pre-emergence products. In a first screening test we compared the efficacy of these ingredients with some other natural substances. The most interesting ones were later compared in a field trial where the efficacy and the required dosages to clean a strip of about 40 cm under the trees were assessed in an ap-ple orchard. A few products showed interesting results (vinegar, pine oil), but the required dosage to keep the strip under... |

Scab is still a big challenge for those apple orchards which are managed organically. Inoculum survives during winter in leaf litter, and sporulates in spring when vegetation starts. Different surveys in other regions showed that it is possible to reduce the presence of scab in apple orchards by removing the leave litter from the orchards. Different trials were carried out to understand if sanitation measures would also be of practical interest in organic orchards in South Tyrol. The results varied. In some trials, scab was reduced on the leaves up to 60%, in others no differences were observed. It is therefore not clear if the results justify the expense of cost and time for such measures. |

The project CO-FREE (2012-2016) aimed to develop strategies to replace/reduce copper use in organic, integrated and conventional farming. CO-FREE alternative test products (CTPs) were tested and integrated together with decision support systems, disease-tolerant varieties, and innovative breeding goals (ideotypes) into improved management strategies. CO-FREE focused on apple/apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), grape/downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), and tomato and potato/late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Starting point of the project were ten CTPs with direct or indirect modes of action including Trichoderma atroviride SC1 and protein extract SCNB, Lysobacter spp., yeast-based derivatives, Cladosporium cladosporioides H39, the oligosaccharidic complex... |

Ryania speciosa is a grove belonging to the family Flacourtiacea, located in tropical climates in Central- and South- America. The Indigenous population used the plant, which contains toxic alkaloids, against cockroaches. In the forties the ground wood was used as insecticide against different pests. In the first version of annex 2b from the EC regulation 2092/91, Ryania was still listed, but it was subsequently cancelled due to its lack of registration as a pesticide in any European country. In organic farming, only a few insecticides are allowed, but in orchards there is a permanent need to control larvae such as coddling moth, etc. The Italian Ministry of Agriculture initiated a survey to investigate the possibility of developing an 'organic'... |

The growth inhibiting effect of four commercially available grapefruit seed extracts on the causal organism of apple scab Venturia inaequalis was tested. Germination of the conidia of Venturia inaequalis was pronouncedly inhibited by all tested extracts. The commercial products were analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. All samples contained at least one preserving agent. These substances were identified as either benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, methyl parabene or propyl parabene. Freshly prepared extracts from seeds of grapefruits (Citrus paradisi) did not inhibit the germination of Venturia inaequalis. It was therefore concluded that the antifungal effect of grapefruit seed extracts is... |

Thinning trials with lime sulphur were carried out for 5 years on different sites in South Tyrol. The sprays were applied during blossom to various varieties. During these trials different amounts of active ingredients, water volumes and numbers of treatments were used. Beside the thinning effect the influence on yield (kg/tree) and Fruit quality (average size of the Fruits, fruit-russetting, fruit-deformations) and the return bloom of the treated trees were evaluated. In several cases the use of lime sulphur gave satisfactory results (thinning effect >20%). The results showed a correlation with the amount of active ingredient, water volume, and number of treatments. In most of cases it was possible to increase the average Fruit size. The influence on... |

Orchards, as intensive cropping systems, often have low diversity of plant species, which limits the promotion of natural enemies for pest control. The implementation of agri-environmental schemes, such as flower strips, could enhance biological control. We developed perennial, multifunctional flower strips with native plant species. In the second and third year after sowing, plant diversity and ground cover between flower strips (FS) in the drive alleys and the spontaneous orchard vegetation in control plots (Cont) were compared in 19 experimental blocks of eight organic apple orchards in six European countries. On average 73.7% of the sown plant species were established and plant diversity of FS was on average 43% higher than in Cont. Multivariate... |

In the organic apple orchards in South Tyrol different voles (Fam. Arvicolidae) are the cause of big damages on the trees. At present there isn't any product listed t the annex 2b of the EC- decree 2092/91 for organic agriculture, which could control the voles efficiently. Therefore it is quite difficult to control the voles in organic orchards. It is necessary to convince European and national authorities, associations and organs of control to allow the use of suitable products. Our trials showed that Silmurin, an extract of the red sea-onion (Uriginea marsitima) controls quite efficiently the field mouse (Microtus arvalis), but hasn't any effect against the earth vole (Arvicola terrestris). Against these voles we obtained good results with... |

The apple variety Braeburn is very popular among the organic apple growers in South Tyrol. Braeburn brings high and regular yields and good prices at the north European fruit and vegetable market. Braeburn is quite susceptible to scab and mildew. To regulate this latter disease the organic orchardists use mainly sulphur products. Braeburn however is sensitive to sulphur treatments. Mainly during summer at high tem-peratures the leaves of Braeburn treated with sulphur develop a yellowish colour and necrotic spots. A field-trial was carried out for 2 years to investigate which sulphur formulations and application techniques give less phytotoxic problems to leaves and fruits of the apple variety Braeburn. The results show only small dif-ferences between the... |
