Última Evidence of mesoscale eddies in the Northeast Atlantic from a drifting buoy experiment ArchiMer Madelain, Francois; Kerut, Eg. A drifting buoy experiment was conducted in the Northeast Atlantic from February to September of 1976. A large anticyclonic eddy was observed in the experiment area as the buoys were tracked by the "Nimbus F" satellite. The diameter of the eddy ranged from 100 to 150 km and buoys circled around its center at a mean speed of 10 to 15 cm/sec., completing the cycle in 20 to 30 days. Direct current measurements taken under two drifting buoys in the experiment area in May of 1976 showed the eddy currents extending to a depth of at least 600 m and probably deeper.
