CAUSALITY AMONG FED CATTLE MARKET VARIABLES: DIRECTED ACYCLIC GRAPHS ANALYSIS OF CAPTIVE SUPPLY AgEcon
Lee, Andrew C.; Kim, Man-Keun.
In quantitative research, direction of causality among the variables is often assumed without a rigorous test. In this study, the directed acyclic graph (DAG) method was used to illuminate causal relationships among fed cattle industry variables, in particular, it was shown that captive supply causes spot market price to change.

Climate Change Impact on Rice Yield and Production Risk AgEcon
Kim, Man-Keun; Pang, Arwin.
The relationship among rice yield and weather variables in Korea is explored using a stochastic production function. The results reveal that average rice yield is positively related to temperature and negatively associated with precipitation. Both temperature and precipitation, which are risk-increasing inputs, are positively related to rice yield variability. The widened yield variability can be transferred to the fluctuation of rice production and rice price instability. Larger market risk is expected in the future since both temperature and precipitation are anticipated to increase. An evaluation of climate change impact on rice yield variability reveals that it may increase by up to 10%~20%. Reducing yield variability and managing market risk would be...

Development and Initial Application of an Integrated Linear Programming/Social Accounting Model: Rangeland Livestock Application AgEcon
Harris, Thomas R.; Alevy, Jonathan E.; Kim, Man-Keun; Fadali, Betsy.
Changes in allocation of federal grazing permits to ranchers can impact not only local ranchers but the entire county economy itself. Regional impacts of changing grazing rights and grazing fees are measured by linking cattle production through a linear programming framework with a county level social accounting matrix (SAM) model.

Uncertainty Discounting for Land-Based Carbon Sequestration AgEcon
Kim, Man-Keun; McCarl, Bruce A..
The effect of stochastic factors on soil carbon makes the quantity of carbon generated under a sequestration project uncertain. Hence, the quantity of sequestered carbon may need to be discounted to avoid liability from shortfalls. We present a potentially applicable uncertainty discount and discuss difficulties that might arise in empirical use. We insist that the variance in historical crop yields across geographical areas is used to derive a proxy variance for forming an uncertainty discount for carbon projects. Application of our approach suggests that project level uncertainty discounts would be 15–20% for the East Texas region.

An Efficiency Analysis of Nevada and Utah Counties: Region Size Leads Regional Efficiency AgEcon
Kim, Man-Keun; Harris, Thomas R..
The hypothesis that regional size increases regional efficiency is tested in this study. Data Envelopment Analysis and the Directed Acyclic Graph were used to reveal the causal relationship between regional efficiency and region size in terms of population density. Region size and the infrastructure directly cause regional efficiency, and regional efficiency affects regional income indirectly via formulation of Metropolitan area

Input-Output Analysis, Linear Programming and Modified Multipliers AgEcon
Zhu, Erqian Julia; Kim, Man-Keun; Harris, Thomas R..
The input-output (IO) analysis explores changes in final demand through the regional economy using multipliers. However, it isn’t flexible to investigate the regional impact from the capacity limitations which are directly imposed on production, not final demand. This is because the multipliers are changing with exogenous restrictions on production. Conventionally, the IO analysis is performed assuming exogenous production restrictions being the changes in final demands or assuming the sector being exogenous sector like the final demand. If researchers or policy makers are interested in only economic impacts from production restrictions, there is no need to look into the modified multipliers. The modified multipliers should be considered when researchers...

Wildfire and Respiratory Illness: Linking Fire Events and Attributes to Health Outcomes AgEcon
Moeltner, Klaus; Kim, Man-Keun; Yang, Wei; Zhu, Erqian Julia.
Existing studies on the economic impact of wildfire smoke have focused either on single fire events or entire fire seasons without distinguishing between individual occurrences. Neither approach allows for an examination of the marginal effects of fire attributes, such as distance and fuel type, on health impacts and costs. Yet, improved knowledge of these marginal effects can provide important guidance for efficient wildfire management strategies. This study aims to bridge this gap using detailed information on 35 large-scale wildfires in the California and Nevada Sierras that have sent smoke plumes to the Reno / Sparks area of Northern Nevada over a three-year period. We relate the daily acreage burned by these fires to daily data on local hospital...

FED CATTLE PRICE DISCOVERY: DIRECTED ACYCLIC GRAPH AND TIME SERIES MODELING AgEcon
Lee, Andrew C.; Kim, Man-Keun.
Locating fed cattle price discovery center is revisited using the framework that combines recent progress in causal research with time series analysis. The Bernanke factorization in innovation accounting is obtained by a graphical method called directed acyclic graph which uses data to identify the contemporaneous causal structure among the innovations. This may represent an improvement over the conventional methods which use human judgment and/or theory to supply such information. Results indicate that Kansas market is a dominant price leader where new information is discovered. Contrary to the previous studies, Nebraska market does not appear to be a price discovery location.

Time Varying Coefficient: An Application of Flexible Least Squares to Cattle Captive Supply AgEcon
Kim, Man-Keun; Lee, Andrew C..
Although conventional linear regression techniques assume time constancy of parameters time varying coefficient or the problem of structural instability in econometric relationships has been recognized by econometricians. In this study, time varying impact of captive supply on fed cattle cash market price is investigated via flexible least squares approach. Time path of flexible least squares coefficient estimate indicates an approximately four fold increase in price impact of captive supply over the sample period, but even this multiplied price impact is small compared to the effect of boxed beef price which shows negligible time variation. The time path also aids in identification of structural breaks in the price impact of captive supply.
