Within the academics of development policy organic farming is often regarded as a production for the rich, due to the fact that a major part of the organic production in the South goes to the wealthy North. However, the organic sector in developing countries are generally dominated by entrepreneurs with a high knowledge on the requirements for supplying global commodity chains to the North as well as all the obstacles in the South for obtaining such a position. Rather than being viewed as a niche production for the rich. the organic sector should be regarded as a potential locomotive for agricultural development in the South. |

This paper presents a qualitative study of the trade-offs made by organic food product consumers in the Chinese Metropolis of Shanghai. More precisely, this article deals with trade-offs that consumers make between three types of products: (1) locally produced organic food products, (2) products that are locally and conventionally produced and (3)imported organic food products. We used a qualitative methodology using open questions and projective techniques and based on 23 individual interviews. Local organic products are the products best perceived by the Chinese interviewees, who think that organic food is beneficial to health and makes agriculture more environmentally friendly. The fact that food is produced locally is another positive argument for... |

The paper is based on research conducted for DARCOF II (Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming, www.darcof.dk). The aim of the research project is to analyze the future development of the Danish organic food sector through focusing on two agro-commodities: vegetables and pork. Emphasis is placed on identification of economic forces within the supply chains. The main conclusions of the paper – being the results from the organic vegetable chain – are that the rules and regulations, and the development of alternative transaction processes in organic food and farming have so far been founded on social counter reactions to the mechanisms of a free market economy that result in the marginalization of farmers, animals welfare and the environment. However,... |

The chapter describes the development of organic food and farming in China, concerning number of farms, hectare converted, type of products produced, the value of production and export as well which provinces of China where the major organic production is concentrated. The history of certification and regulation as well as market prospects are explained. |

The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the factors which historically have shaped the evo-lution of the Danish organic food and farm sector, and to determine what its near future could be in terms of new supplier motivations for converting to organic, eventual changes in the farm structure and new modes of organizing the governance structure between farmers and retailers. From a slow introduction during the 1980s the development of the organic farms sector itself takes on speed during the 90’s getting broad societal recognition and political support. However, by the turning point of the millennium organic farming in Denmark had reached maturity and even started to decline in 2004 in terms of number of farms and land converting to organic... |

Using an analytic framework grounded in New Institutional Economics and property rights theory, concepts of power and control over access to critical assets along a supply chain has laid the foundation for the analysis of the development of the organic vegetable chain in Denmark. Two commodities were chosen as detailed case studies: organic carrots and iceberg lettuce. By combining qualitative and quantitative data bargain power was revealed to be growing at the retailer node, and producer-retailer relations were examined in detail. Retailers use various control mechanisms that are being tightened in relation to fees and period of credit payment. Terms of trade as well as price premiums for organic carrots have been examined showing decline and contraction... |

The working paper contains the theoretical foundation for analysing the future development of organic foods in Denmark, which methodologically will be centered around two supply chains: - organic vegetables - organic pork Three analytic levels of focuspoints are chosen: 1) The farm/household level 2) The supply chain 3) The institutional frame Within each level different theory is applied. |

Ecological economics (EE) is proposed as an approach to decision making and planning in organic farming. It is argued that EE is better suited for this task than the conventional neoclassical economy approach. The contribution that EE can make to the organic farming movement is apparent on the ontological level, through its focus on socio-economic systems as nested subsystems of the ecosystem. In addition, EE’s stance on the issues of allocation, distribution and scale seems to constitute a more appropriate conceptualization about the interaction between socio-economic systems and the environment, which is more closely aligned to the principal aims of the organic farming movement. The concepts of time and scale are used as examples of how EE, with input... |

Paul Rye Kledal was asked by Økologisk Jordbrug how many organic farmer were actually in "over supply" due to a professor at the Aarhus School of business claimed that there was 1.000 organic farmers in over supply caused by the ove supply of organic milk. Paul Rye Kledal calculated together with the Danish Agricultural Advisory Service, National Centre in Aarhus, Jutland. 700 organic farmers were in oversupply and based on those numbers the article discusses how organic farmers also will be hit by the decline in farms as well as growth in size. |

Organic production is located mostly in the northern and eastern parts of Tanzania. Production consists mainly of coffee, tea, nuts, spices and various types of vegetables. In addition to the fertile soils and good climatic conditions in this part of the country, urban centres, accessible infrastructure, and transportation possibilities play an important role. For example, the northern region of Kagera, bordering Uganda, is only 200 kilometres from the Ugandan capital Kampala with its international airport Entebbe. The region of Arusha, close to the fertile volcano soils of Kilimanjaro, likewise has an international airport, and in the east at the coast, the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam (which is Arabic for ‘heaven of peace’), offers international air... |
