A classification of the Melastomataceae, modified on the basis of wood anatomical evidence, is discussed. Three subfamilies (Crypteronioideae, Memecyloideae and Melastomatoideae) are recognized . Astronioideae, recognized in other classifications, are abolished and their constituent genera are classified in Memecyloideae (Pternandra) and Melastomatoideae (four genera of the tribe Astronieae). Wood anatomically Melastomataceae show affinities with a number of Myrtalean families, notably with Lythraceae, Onagraceae and Myrtaceae. The wood anatomy of ancestral ‘Protomelastomataceae’ is hypothesized and a tentative phylogeny is suggested for the extant subfamilies and tribes. |

Systematic wood anatomy of the tribe Guettardeae (Rubiaceae). The wood anatomy of nearly all genera of the Guettardeae (Rubiaceae, Guettardoideae) has been examined, and in this respect the tribe is heterogeneous. Suggestions are made for a delimitation of the tribe. Guettarda, Bobea, Antirhea, Malanea and Chomelia Jacq. are sufficiently similar in their wood anatomical characters to warrant retention in the same tribe. Machaonia, Timonius and Dichilanthe are anomalous. Suggestions are given for taxonomic revisions of some genera based on their wood anatomy. |

In this paper we investigate the pattern of wood anatomical variation in some groups of Rubiaceae (i.e. Cinchoneae, Rondeletieae and Condamineae) by using a numerical pattern detection method which involves character weighing (Hogeweg 1975). In this method character weights are obtained iteratively on the basis of the distribution of character values in previously generated classes; these classes being generated by agglomerative cluster analysis, initially with characters weighed equally and subsequently with characters weighed differentially as indicated above. This paper follows upon an earlier paper in the series “Studies in Annonaceae” (Maas et al. 1986). Twelve new species are described, viz. 2 in Duguetia, 1 in Ephedranthus, 5 in Guatteria, 2 in Hornschuchia, 1 in Tetrameranthus, and 1 in Unonopsis. A new combination is made in Enicosanthellum. Some amendments and additions to the revision of Tetrameranthus (Westra 1985), including an updated key, are given. Monocarpia euneura Miq. appears to have priority over M. marginalis (R. An unusual type of trichome is described for Anaxagorea (Annonaceae). On top of the stalk cell, extremely thinwalled cells form single, branched or stellate trichomes. The terminal cell(s) always end bluntly. When the thinwalled cells have been shed, the thick cuticle of the stalk cell remains as a cylindrical scar. Until now, this trichome type has not yet been found in other annonaceous genera. Our data contradict reports of other authors (Jovet-Ast 1942, Kramer 1969, Roth 1981) with regard to occurrence and structure of hairs in Anaxagorea. |

In a number of species of Artocarpus J.R. & G. Forster (Moraceae) laticifers were not only observed as radial tubes, enclosed in the ray tissue, but also as axial tubes, enclosed in the fibre tissue. Both types of latex tubes are connected and considered as one branched laticiferous system. A detailed description of the individual latex tubes and the whole system, based on light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic observation, is presented. |

After completion of the monograph of Anaxagorea, a number of new collections were studied and annotated. Among this material there appeared to be a new species from Venezuela, at the same time the first true rheophyte in Annonaceae. The rare and hitherto incompletely known A. silvatica has now turned up from the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. The flower of this species is described for the first time. New records are mentioned insofar as they add to previously existing information. |

The shedding of branches along a preformed layer is a complex phenomenon in which several types of xylem elements are involved. The abscission layers in Perebea mollis and Naucleopsis guianensis are distinguished from the normally developed xylem by the presence of shorter unlignified fibres with small simple pits. Most of these fibres show large nuclei. In this zone containing abnormal fibres, the vessels, rays and parenchyma are conspicuously different from those of the normal tissue. The transition in anatomy from the main branch to the abscission layer is much more abrupt than that from the abscission layer to the secondary branch. The present paper deals with the wood anatomy of the Blakeeae (Melastomataceae). Generic descriptions of the secondary xylem of Blakea, Topobea, and Huilaea are given and compared with data on 16 genera of the Miconieae. Numerical pattern detection was undertaken. The results confirm our preliminary ideas that Blakea and Topobea do not differ enough to enable the separation of these genera on the basis of their wood anatomy. Within the Miconieae it is not possible to separate the genera. However, some anatomical differences between the two tribes were found. The genus Huilaea seems to belong in the Blakeeae although it also shows similarities with the Miconieae. A preliminary account is given of the parenchyma-like tangential bands, as seen on the transverse surface of Miconia species. The bands consist of parenchyma strands, fusiform parenchyma cells and fibres. These fibres differ from the fibres of the ground tissue in wall thickness, lumen diameter and sometimes in pit size. In the bands intermediate forms between parenchyma cells and fibres occur. The functional relationship between the elements forming the parenchyma-like bands is discussed. The systematic value of this phenomenon is still uncertain. In other genera of the Melastomataceae, however, as well as in other families of the Myrtales it has also been observed. |

Several species in neotropical genera are described, viz. 1 in Bocageopsis, 2 in Cremastosperma, 1 in Hornschuchia, 1 in Oxandra, 4 in Pseudoxandra, and 2 in Unonopsis. Cremastosperma anomalum R.E. Fries is transferred to Malmea. Cremastosperma pacificum R.E. Fries is recorded for Panama for the first time. Xylopia ulei Diels, X. neglecta (O. Kuntze) R.E. Fries, and X. intermedia R.E. Fries are brought into synonymy with X. benthamii R.E. Fries, X. parviflora Spruce, and X. sericea A. St.Hil. respectively. The African Xylopia parviflora (A. Rich.) Benth., non Spruce, now has to bear the name X. longipetala De Wild, et T. Durand. |

The small genus Tetrameranthus (five species) stands isolated within the Annonaceae. A cladistic analysis was carried out using macromorphological characters in order to find possible apomorphies and to attempt a phylogenetic reconstruction. In the “best” cladograms there appear two subsets, one formed by T. duckei, T. macrocarpus, and T. pachycarpus, the other by T. laomae and T. umbellatus. Both are supported by a number of apomorphic character states. Any other conclusions remain speculative. |
