The tribe Gardenieae in the restricted delimitation proposed by Bremekamp and Verdcourt is wood anatomically homogeneous. The genera of the Ixoreae studied by me also agree with each other in wood structure. Within the tribe Mussaendeae in the delimitation accepted by Schumann the wood anatomy shows much variation. The tribe becomes more homogeneous, if some of the genera included in this tribe by Schumann are removed. The systematic position of some genera, which in the literature are said to be related to Gardenieae, Ixoreae or Mussaendeae, is discussed in the light of similarities and differences in the wood anatomy. |

This paper deals with the Vanguerieae, Cinchoneae, Condamineae and Rondeletieae, and concludes a study on the anatomy of the secondary xylem of the Cinchonoideae + Ixoroideae. The taxonomically homogeneous Vanguerieae show only little variation. Taxonomically the Cinchoneae, Condamineae, and Rondeletieae, placed near each other in the Cinchonoideae, are rather heterogeneous. Their woods show also more anatomical differences, with a similar scala of variation within each tribe. Numerical analysis of the pattern of variation was undertaken. Cluster analysis showed a very distinct bipartition, which remained almost invaried while calculations were executed with different character weighings. This bipartition is not expressed in the existing taxonomic... |

The wood anatomy of 47 genera of the neotropical Melastomataceae is described in detail. The wood anatomy of the neotropical part of this pantropical family supports the subdivision into two groups: the subfamily Memecyloideae (the genus Mouriri) and the subfamily Melastomatoideae (all other genera). A relationship of Mouriri with other representatives of the family is not supported by the wood anatomical characters, because of differences in fibre type, vessel distribution, and the fibre length/vessel member length ratio, and the presence of included phloem in Mouriri. The subfamily Melastomatoideae is a fairly homogeneous group. Although some characters are very pronounced in some tribes and scarce or absent in other tribes, most tribes show a wide... |

The anatomy of the secondary xylem of the Rubiaceae confirms the relationship between genera and tribes as delimited and arranged by recent authors (Bremekamp, Verdcourt). Two character complexes can be distinguished, the distribution of which is in accordance with the classification of the genera and tribes and to a certain degree of subfamilies as well. Exceptions to this rule occur, but mostly in genera of an uncertain taxonomic position. Henriquezia is an example. Cinchona, by some taxonomists considered to be congeneric with Ladenbergia, differs in its wood anatomy from that genus and from the other Cinchoneae. Rubia fruticosa and other woody members of the chiefly herbaceous tribe Rubieae deviate so strongly in their xylem structure from the other... |

Wood samples of a number of Cinchoneae and Naucleeae sensu Schumann were studied, and the results compared with data found in the literature. On the whole the representatives of the Cinchoneae appeared to show a rather high degree of similarity among each other with the exception, however, of the genera Coutarea, Exostemma, Corynanthe, Crossopteryx, and Hymenodictyon. The creation of the tribe Coptosapelteae and its inclusion in the Ixoroideae seem to be corroborated by the particular character of the wood anatomy. The restriction of the Naucleeae to Nauclea L. ( Sarcocephalus Afzel.) is not supported by the anatomy of the wood. |
