Aeromonas media in compost amendments contributes to suppression of Pythium ultimum in cress Organic Eprints
Oberhaensli, T.; Hofer, V.; Tamm, L.; Fuchs, J. G.; Koller, M.; Herforth-Rahmé, J.; Maurhofer, M.; Thuerig, B..
Soil-borne diseases such as damping-off caused by Pythium sp. are responsible for high yield losses in organic vegetable production and are difficult to control. Compost amendments have been shown to improve in many cases survival and growth of plants in soils infested with soil-borne diseases. Yet, not all composts are disease suppressive and suppressiveness of composts can be pathogen-specific. Cress (Lepidium sativum L.) was grown in a standard peat substrate amended either with coco fiber (conducive control) or with composts differing in their suppressiveness towards Pythium ultimum. Bacteria were isolated from the rhizoplane and the most abundant species identified by MALDI-TOF MS. The bacterial composition in the rhizoplane of plants grown in...

Surveying Pathogenic Bacteria in Vegetables Organic Eprints
Hackl, E.; Arthurson , V.; Baggesen, D.; Brankatschk, K.; Duffy , B.; Fenzl, C.; Friedel, J.K.; Hedin, F.; Hofmann, A.; Jensen , A.N.; Jäderlund, L.; Koller, M.; Rinnofner, T.; Schmid, M.; Storm , C.; Wyss, G.S.; Sessitsch, A..
Bacterial pathogens have increasingly been identified as disease causing agents in vegetable-linked outbreaks. Consumers nowadays show higher demands for fresh or minimally processed fruits and vegetables, and at the same time potential sources of pathogen infestation are increasing due to the more frequent use of animal manures as fertilizers in organic than in conventional agriculture. On the other hand, a higher antagonistic potential against invading pathogens is implicated from the more diverse microbiota in organic soils. Vegetable-associated outbreaks in Europe are not well documented, and guidelines are missing for reducing risks of pathogen infestation. Thus, a survey on organically grown vegetables has been carried out by the “PathOrganic”...

Development of disease-suppressive organic growing media Organic Eprints
Fuchs, J. G.; Hedrich, T.; Hofer, V.; Koller, M.; Oberhaensli, T.; Ribera Regal, J.; Tamm, L.; Thuerig, B.; Schwarze, F.W.M.R.; Herforth-Rahmé, J..
Vigorous seedlings are an important base for vegetable production. Beside the availability of appropriate amounts of nutrients, the health of seedlings is decisive. Soil-borne diseases are a challenging problem in organic seedling production. Here, we present results on the development of disease-suppressive growing media. Three aspects were examined: (i) use of different components of growing media (peat, coconut fiber, wood fiber, compost), (ii) influence of selected organic nitrogen fertilizers and (iii) use of different microorganisms (including commercial biocontrol agents (BCA)). Three plant-pathogen systems were used in this study: cucumber-Pythium ultimum, cress-Pythium ultimum and basil-Rhizoctonia solani. Green waste compost showed a good...

PathOrganic – Risks and Recommendations Regarding Human Pathogens in Organic Vegetable Production Chains Organic Eprints
Arthurson, V.; Baggesen, D.; Brankatschk, K.; Dalsgaard, A.; Duffy, B.; Fenzl, C.; Friedel, J.K.; Hackl, E.; Hartmann, A.; Hedin, F.; Hofmann, A.; Jäderlund, L.; Jansson, J.; Jensen, A.N.; Koller, M.; Mäder, P.; Rinnofner, T.; Schmid, M.; Storm, C.; van Bruggen, A.H.C.; Widmer, F.; Wyss, G.S.; Zijlstra, C.A.; Sessitsch, A..
PathOrganic assesses risks associated with the consumption of fresh and minimally processed vegetables due to the prevalence of bacterial human pathogens in plant produce. The project evaluates whether organic production poses a risk on food safety, taking into consideration sources of pathogen transmission (e.g. animal manure). The project also explores whether organic versus conventional production practices may reduce the risk of pathogen manifestation. In Europe, vegetable-linked outbreaks are not well investigated. A conceptual model together with novel sampling strategies and specifically adjusted methods provides the basis for large-scale surveys of organically grown plant produce in five European countries. Critical control points are...

Pilot Experiments with Electrodialysis and Ozonation for the Production of a Fertilizer from Urine Organic Eprints
Pronk, W.; Zuleeg, S.; Lienert, J.; Escher, B.; Koller, M.; Berner, A.; Koch, G.; Boller, M..
Pilot tests were performed with a process combination of electrodialysis and ozonation for the removal of micropollutants and the concentration of nutrients in urine. In continuous and batch experiments, maximum concentration factors up to 3.5 and 4.1 were obtained, respectively. The desalination capacity did not decrease significantly during continuous operation periods of several weeks. Membrane cleaning after 195 days resulted in approximately 35% increase in desalination rate. The Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES), a bioassay that selectively detects oestrogenic compounds, confirmed that about 90% of the oestrogenic activity was removed by electrodialysis. HPLC analysis showed that ibuprofen was removed to a high extent, while other micropollutants were...

Bioseedling: a chain approach to the production of healthier seeds and seedlings of Lamb’s lettuce Valerianella locusta Organic Eprints
Herforth-Rahmé, J.; Fuchs, J.G.; Hofer, V.; Schnueriger, M.; Schärer, H.J.; Koller, M..
The project BIOSEEDLING “Robust planting material from seeds to young plants - an implementation oriented chain approach” aims to find improved production procedures for vegetable seedlings of lamb’s lettuce. First, the production of lamb’s lettuce seeds of a professional seed producer was analyzed and the effect of harvest time and seed size on the germination and disease rate in the seeds was studied. Then, using seeds naturally infected by Peronospora valerianellae and Acidovorax valerianellae, several seed disinfection methods were compared: aerated steam, hot water, sodium hypochlorite, ethanol, Calcium hydroxide, and compost pellet. After testing methods for the identification of the seed pathogens and the quantification of the infection, an...
