Improved production of postlarval white shrimp through supplementation of L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate in their diet OMA

L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (ApP) was used as a vitamin C source to study the ascorbic acid (AA) requirements for the early postlarval stages of white shrimp (<i>Penaeus vannamei</i>). First the stability of ApP in the diets was determined: ApP losses after pelletizing and 10 min immersion in seawater were 25-35% and 30%, respectively. Semipurified diets with five levels of ApP (0, 20, 40, 100 and 200 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> expressed as active AA were fed <i>ad libitum</i> to <i>P. vannamei</i> (PL-14 stage, mean dry weight 0.73 mg) for 26 days. The effects of adding two different types of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (purified from soybean lecithin, SPC, or marine fish roe, MPC) on growth, survival and osmotic stress resistance as well as lipid and fatty acid composition of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> was determined. PC was added at a level of 1.5% in a semi-purified diet containing similar levels of essential fatty acids (EFA). A PC-free diet served as the control treatment. Effect of dietary phospholipid on requirements for and incorporation of <i>n</i>-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids in postlarval <i>Penaeus japonicus</i> Bate OMA

<i>Penaeus japonicus</i> postlarvae were fed three dietary levels of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) (0, 0.5 and 1%) with or without 1.5% soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC; 95% purity). The experiment was conducted during two successive phases of 20 days starting with 12-day-old postlarvae. Supplying 1.5% of SPC and 1% <i>n</i>-3 HUFA in the diet significantly improved the growth, survival and resistance to osmotic stress of postlarvae compared to those fed phosphatidylcholine (PC)-free and HUFA-free diets, respectively. A significant interaction between dietary SPC and n-3 HUFA was only found for their effect on resistance to osmotic stress. Postlarvae of tiger shrimp, <i>Penaeus monodon</i> (Fabricius), were fed semipurified diets supplemented with various levels of astaxanthin (AX) and ascorbic acid-polyphosphate (ApP): three groups were fed 230 mg AX kg<sup>-1</sup> diet combined with 100, 1700 and 3400 mg ascorbic acid (AA) kg<sup>-1</sup> diet, respectively; two diets contained 810 mg AX kg<sup>-1</sup> mixed with 200 and 1700 mg AA kg<sup>-1</sup>, respectively.
