State of the Art: Consumer expectation, attitudes and perception about organic foods have or are currently being studied. The EU-project OMIaRD project has produced the most comprehensive statistics so far on the scope and dimensions of the organic market in Europe and will shortly provide more detailed insights from focus group and laddering interviews with regular and occasional consumers. Problemstellung Der europäische Biomarkt entwickelt sich schnell. Er wächst jedes Jahr um ca. 20 %. Um die Förderung des biologischen Landbaus entsprechend einer harmonischen Angebots- und Nachfrageentwicklung ausrichten zu können, werden detaillierte Informationen über die Produktion, die Vermarktung und den Konsum von Bioprodukten benötigt. Bisher liegen nur lückenhaft Daten zum Biomarkt in den einzelnen europäischen Ländern vor. This paper presents the current state and prospects of domestic organic market development in selected countries with emerging organic markets: The Czech Republic (CZ), Poland (PL), Hungary (HU), Ukraine (UA), Mexico (MX) and India (IN). While governmental support for organic farming varies across all countries studied, the organic sector is focused mainly on export markets in every country represented. The results of a two-step expert consultation indicate that development of the domestic market is mainly hampered by a lack of processing and distribution infrastructure, as well as the relatively low purchasing power of domestic consumers. The organic markets in Western European countries like Germany and Middle and Eastern European countries like Hungary and Czech Republic are at different levels of development. While in Germany the per capita consumption of organic food in 2002 was app. € 32 in the Czech Republic the corresponding value was app. € 0,50 and in Hungary app. € 0,39. The paper describes and analyses the results of store-checks conducted in outlets of selected retail chains in the named three countries. Main objective is to compare marketing activities of conventional retail chains, as main driving actor group for the market development, with regard to organic products. |
