Thermal Band Heating for Intra-Row Weed Control Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, M.H.; Kristensen, E.F.; Kristensen, J.K.; Melander, B..
Surface steaming of soil is a very energy-intensive process, and consequently, efforts have been made to develop a machine for narrow-band steaming of the soil under and around rows of cultivated plants prior to seeding. The use of this machine may achieve up to 90% energy savings, and will also reduce the amount of damage to the flora and fauna. A special test rig has been developed with the objective of obtaining new information about narrow-band soil steaming. For a detailed analysis of the temperature profile in a cross-section of the processed band, an apparatus has been developed especially to record the temperatures obtained at 63 locations and at seven levels across the ditch. On the basis of the results from the test rig, a prototype band-steamer...

Comparing the Effect of Continuous Drying and Drum Drying on Fungal Contamination of Bread Grain Organic Eprints
Elmholt, S.; Kristensen, E.F.; Thrane, U..
This Research Note concludes that both drum drying and ordinary continuous drying efficiently dry the grain but that drum drying is much more efficient in reducing the number of surface dwelling fungal propagules on the grain, both yeasts and filamentous fungi. This includes the toxigenic species, Fusarium culmorum, as well as other fusaria. It also includes the dark filamentous fungi, Alternaria infectoria and Cladosporium spp. Both drying techniques seemed to stimulate growth of Eurotium spp., probably due to heat activation of ascospore germination.

High-temperature treatment for efficient drying of bread rye and reduction of fungal contaminants Organic Eprints
Kristensen, E.F.; Elmholt, S.; Thrane, U..
Mycotoxin producing fungi are natural contaminants of cereals and their toxins are harmful to humans and animals. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is among the most important. Heat treatment by drum drying does not eliminate already formed mycotoxins but the technique can reduce the number of viable fungi on the grain. The aim of this study was to establish a drying regime that kills fungal propagules on rye without reducing its quality for baking. Special attention was paid to some important mycotoxin producing species. As drying temperatures and retention time in the drum are essential, the drum drier must be equipped with an effective control unit. Two different control systems were tested. The results showed that fungi colonising the grain can be much more...

FeederAnt - An autonomous mobile unit feeding outdoor pigs Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, R.N.; Sørensen, C.G.; Jensen, H.F.; Andersen, B.H.; Kristensen, E.F.; Jensen, K.; Maagaard, J.; Persson, A..
Small robots and the concept of decentralized animal husbandry make it possible to renew the principles of organic agriculture. The farm animals will be able to use the same type of housing and are placed integrated with the fields. This is expected to achieve a better utilization of nutrients and a better survival rate for useful insects and micro organisms. The small fields are flexible and could fit to the variation in soil structure topography. This type of precision agriculture has the possibility of increasing biodiversity. The paper presents the concept of an autonomic feeding system for outdoor piglets. Initial results are presented using a remote controlled feeding unit (a prototype of the FeederAnt) to feed several pens with piglets. The...

Thermal Band Heating for Intra-Row Weed Control Organic Eprints
Jørgensen, M.H.; Kristensen, J.K.; Melander, B.; Kristensen, E.F..
For many years, disinfection of the soil by means of steaming has been a common method for eliminating weeds and fungal diseases. However, surface steaming of soil is a very energy-intensive process, and consequently, efforts have been made to develop a machine for narrow-band steaming of the soil under and around rows of cultivated plants prior to seeding. The use of this machine may achieve up to 90% energy savings, and will also reduce the amount of damage to the flora and fauna. A special test rig has been developed with the objective of obtaining new information about narrow-band soil steaming. The test rig consists of a revolving ditch, in which the soil can be heated by means of submerged steam jets. The rig is equipped with thermosensors for...

Combining mechanical rhizome removal and cover crops for Elytrigia repens control in organic barley systems Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Nørremark, Michael; Kristensen, E.F..
Mechanical weed control of perennial weeds in organic crop production over long post-harvest periods is incompatible with the establishment of cover crops for improving soil quality and preventing nutrient leaching. We suggest a new concept that comprises uprooting and immediate removal of vegetative propagules located within the plough layer to allow for quick re-establishment of a plant cover. A field experiment comparing the effects of conventional practices (stubble cultivation) with different combinations of rotary cultivation (1, 2 or 4 passes) and cover crops (none vs rye-vetch-mustard mixture) on Elytrigia repens rhizome removal, shoot growth and suppression of a subsequent barley crop were examined in two growing seasons. Four passes with a...

Udsædsbårne sygdomme i økologisk såsæd - betydning og skadetærskler Organic Eprints
Nielsen, B.J.; Nielsen, G.C.; Pinnschmidt, H.; Wolffhechel, H.; Justesen, A.F.; Hansen, H.J.; Borgen, A.; Bødker, L.; Kristensen, E.F..
