How to understand the complexity of product quality and the challenges in differentiating between organically and conventionally grown products – exemplified by fresh and heat-processed carrots (Daucus carota L.) Organic Eprints
Seljåsen, Randi; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg; Kretzschmar, Ursula; Birlouez, I; Paoletti, F; Lauridsen, Charlotte; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Busscher, Nicolaas; Mengheri, Elena; Sinesio, F.; Zanoli, Raffaele; Vairo, Daniela; Beck, Alexander; Kahl, J..
Quality traits are highly focused upon in the marketing of organic food products. There is a need to define and measure quality as consumers seem to have preconceived notions about the superior health value and taste of organic compared to non-organic products. A commonly held opinion among many consumer groups is that organic farming guarantees optimum quality, despite the fact that this remains unproven. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of quality traits in a plant-based food product, using carrots as an example. Selected designated quality aspects are presented to describe the complexity of quality and discuss the challenges of using these aspects in differentiating between organic and conventional...

Stepwise incorporation of white clover (Trifolium repens L.)as fertiliser increases nitrogen fixation and improves nitrogen retention when intercropped with leek (Allium porrum L.) Organic Eprints
Xie, Yue; Sørensen, Jørn Nygaard; Petersen, Karen Koefoed; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
Background and aims We investigated whether the incorporation of intercropped white clover as a split-dose fertiliser improves N retention of the plant-soil system in leek production. Methods White clover and leek were grown in pots where clover was stepwise incorporated into soil as fertiliser. Half of the clover was incorporated before leek transplantation (LT), the other half was incorporated 26 (S1) or 41 (S2) days after LT, compared with full incorporation of all clover (F) before LT. 15N injection and leaching studies were performed to investigate interspecific competition and the effects of precipitation on soil N availability. Results Stepwise incorporations increased or had no effect on leek growth, despite competition for N between white...

Eating quality of carrots (Daucus carota L.) grown in one conventional and three organic cropping systems over three years. Organic Eprints
Bach, Vibe; Kidmose, Ulla; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg; Edelenbos, Merete.
The eating quality of carrots (Daucus carota L.) was investigated to evaluate the impact of cropping systems (one conventional and three organic systems) and growing years (2007, 2008, and 2009) on root size, chemical composition, and sensory quality. The content of dry matter, sugars, polyacetylenes, and terpenes as well as the sensory quality and root size were related to the climate during the three growing years. A higher global radiation and a higher temperature sum in 2009 as compared to 2007 and 2008 resulted in larger roots, higher contents of dry matter, sucrose, total sugars, and total polyacetylenes, and lower contents of terpenes, fructose, and glucose. No differences were found between conventional and organic carrots with regard to the...

EFFECT OF AN IN-SEASON LIVING MULCH ON LEACHING OF INORGANIC NITROGEN IN CAULIFLOWER (BRASSICA OLERACEA L. VAR. BOTRYTIS) CROPPING IN SLOVENIA, GERMANY AND DENMARK Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg; Campanelli, G.; Bavec, Franc; von Fragstein und Niemsdorff, Peter; Canali, S.; Tittarelli, F..
Vegetables with a high nitrogen demand such as cauliflower may cause intensive leaching of nitrate to the environment in conventional as well as in organic production. In organic cropping systems, the use of an in-season living mulch may decrease the risk of nitrate leaching after harvest when left growing in the field to the end of the leaching season in spring. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of growing an in-season living mulch including legumes on the risk of leaching of inorganic nitrogen over winter, and soil nitrogen availability the following spring. Three field experiments were carried out in Slovenia, Germany and Denmark in the frame of the Interveg project (CORE organic II). Evaluation of soil inorganic nitrogen content was...

Intercropping leek (Allium porrum L.) with dyer’s woad (Isatis tinctoria L.) increases rooted zone and agro-ecosystem retention of nitrogen. Organic Eprints
Xie, Yue; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
Nitrate leaching can be high in organic vegetable production. Late-harvested crops like leek limit the use of autumn catch crops. The aim of this study was to investigate the growing of a combination of a deep-rooted catch crop and a shallow-rooted vegetable to reduce the risk of nitrate leaching. We compared a leek sole crop (S) with two intercropped systems of leek and early-sown dyer’s woad (five weeks after leek planting) (IE) or late-sown dyer’s woad (eight weeks after leek planting) (IL) in two seasons: 2012 and 2013. To reveal root and resource competition, leek with dyer’s woad rows left empty (Semp), and early and late-sown dyer’s woad with leek rows left empty (DEemp, DLemp) were included. Yield, dry above-ground biomass, aboveground N...

Controlled traffic farming increased crop yield, root growth, and nitrogen supply at two organic vegetable farms Organic Eprints
Hefner, M.; Labouriau, R.; Nørremark, Michael; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
Increased farm machinery weight in agricultural production results in soil compaction. Controlled traffic farming (CTF) restricts traffic to permanent lanes, thereby creating traffic free beds for crop production. Field experiments were conducted at two organic vegetable farms in Denmark, on a sandy loam (2013–2016) and on coarse sand (2013–2015) to investigate CTF effects compared with random traffic farming (RTF) on vegetable yield, root growth, and soil mineral nitrogen (N). Root growth was measured using minirhizotrons. White cabbage, potato, and beetroot yield increased by 27%, 70% and 42%, respectively, in CTF compared with RTF in 2015 and winter squash indicated a yield increase of 43% on sandy loam in 2016. White cabbage (2015) and potato, beetroot...

Simulating root growth Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Anders; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg; Berntsen, Jørgen.
Dynamic plant/soil models are used to predict crop production, N dynamics and nitrate leaching loss of different cropping systems. To do this, the models simulate various aspects of plant biology, soil biology and soil physics. Correct simulation of root growth is critical for the simulation of nitrate leaching losses. Measurements have been made on crop root growth on two soil types, and the data used to improve the simulation of root growth within the FASSET model. The paper presents the results from root measurements on winter wheat, spring barley and sugar beets, and the root modelling approach we have developed.

Overwintering grass-clover as intercrop and moderately reduced nitrogen fertilization maintain yield and reduce the risk of nitrate leaching in an organic cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) agroecosystem Organic Eprints
Xie, Yue; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) has high nitrogen (N) demand during growing, but due to its low N use efficiency and N-rich residues, it may cause N losses by leaching after harvest. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of overwintering grass-clover as an intercrop and moderately reduced N fertilization on organic cauliflower yield and risk of nitrate leaching. The experiment tested sole-cropped (S) and intercropped (I) systems using a substitution design and two N fertilizer rates (180 and 230 kg N ha−1). To investigate the competition between cauliflower and grass-clover, cauliflower grown alone with empty grass-clover rows (Semp) and grass-clover grown alone with empty cauliflower rows (GCemp) were included. The...
