Impact of wind waves on the air-sea fluxes: A coupled model ArchiMer
Kudryavtsev, V.; Chapron, Bertrand; Makin, V..
A revised wind-over-wave-coupling model is developed to provide a consistent description of the sea surface drag and heat/moister transfer coefficients, and associated wind velocity and temperature profiles. The spectral distribution of short wind waves in the decimeter to a few millimeters range of wavelengths is introduced based on the wave action balance equation constrained using the Yurovskaya et al. (2013) optical field wave measurements. The model is capable to reproduce fundamental statistical properties of the sea surface, such as the mean square slope and the spectral distribution of breaking crests length. The surface stress accounts for the effect of airflow separation due to wave breaking, which enables a better fit of simulated form drag to...

Simulation of radar backscatter and Doppler shifts of wave-current interaction in the presence of strong tidal current ArchiMer
Hansen, M. W.; Kudryavtsev, V.; Chapron, Bertrand; Johannessen, J. A.; Collard, Fabrice; Dagestad, K. -f.; Mouche, A.a..
A radar imaging model including a Doppler shift module is presented for quantitative studies of radar observations of wave-current interaction in a strong tidal current regime. The model partitions the Doppler shift into the relative contribution arising from the motion of the backscattering facets including Bragg waves, specular points, and breaking waves that are advected by and interact with the underlying surface current. Simulated and observed normalized radar cross sections and Doppler shifts for different environmental conditions and radar parameters are compared and discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. A new generation of Tropical Cyclone Size measurements from space ArchiMer
Reul, Nicolas; Chapron, Bertrand; Zabolotskikh, E.; Donlon, C.; Mouche, Alexis; Tenerelli, Joseph; Collard, F.; Piolle, Jean-francois; Fore, A.; Yueh, S.; Cotton, J.; Francis, P.; Quilfen, Yves; Kudryavtsev, V..
Combined microwave brightness temperature measurements from recent L- and dual C-band satellite radiometers provide new estimates of surface wind speed structure in Tropical Cyclones which enhances temporal sampling capability for gale (34-knots), damaging (50-knots) and destructive (64-knots) wind radii. Wind radii estimates in Tropical Cyclones (TC) are crucial to help determine the TC wind structure for the production of effective warnings and to constrain initial conditions for a number of applications. In that context, we report on the capabilities of a new generation of satellite microwave radiometers operating at L-band frequency (~1.4 GHz) and dual C-band (~6.9 and 7.3 GHz). These radiometers provide wide swath (> 1000 km) coverage at a spatial...
