A dolerite intrusion in Upper Carboniferous sediments in Netherlands offshore block G/17 is described. Based on electron microprobe analyses of clinopyroxene and olivine, a minimum temperature of emplacement of some 1000°C is calculated. As a result of the intrusion, the maturation profile of the surrounding sediments may show a departure from linear behaviour. |

In Galicia occur several polymetamorphic complexes that contain mafic and ultramafic rocks. Mafic volcanics and gabbros are situated in or near the complexes. An episode of metamorphism and granitization encompassed the generation of the volcanics and gabbros. Gravity surveys revealed the existence of deep roots below polymetamorphic complexes. Geochronological investigations yielded Palaeozoic ages from about 500 Ma for the generation of ultramafic rocks and calcalkaline granite series, till ages of around 300 Ma for postkinematic alkaline and calcalkaline granites. A model involving mantle-plume diapirism and rejuvenation of the lower crust is proposed for the Early Palaeozoic evolution of the continental lithosphere of Galicia. An excursion route is... |

The high-grade metamorphic Sobrado-Teijeiro complex forms part of the peripheral belt of the Ordenes basin. The fault-bounded elliptical complex consists of a central unit of highly serpentinized ultramafic rocks, surrounded by (partly retrograded) mafic granulite facies rocks, highgrade paragneisses and orthogneisses. The area studied comprises the northern part of the complex. Here the ultramafic rocks are almost completely serpentinized and only in a few specimens relics of olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and amphibole have been found. Paragneisses, consisting of K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, biotite, muscovite and garnet, form a rim around the mafic and ultramafic rocks. Coarse-grained orthogneisses, belonging to two different bodies, form the... |
