Species interactions between forbs and grass-clover contribute to yield gains and weed suppression in forage grassland mixtures Organic Eprints

Grass-legume mixtures characterized by high productivity, efficient nitrogen (N) use and strong weed suppression were proposed to increase sustainability of grassland production. Adding competitive forbs to grassclover mixtures can be expected to further enhance the high productivity of grass-clover mixtures. This study investigates whether and to what extent adding forbs to a grass-clover mixture results in yield gains, and estimates the contributions of forb species (identity effect) and interactions with the grass-clover mixture (diversity effect) to these gains. Use of tanniferous plants against gastro-intestinal nematodes in ruminants Organic Eprints

On organic farms, infections of gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) in grazing cattle, sheep and goats can have a detrimental impact on animal health, and are therefore of substantial economic importance. The aim of our interdisciplinary project is to investigate the basic conditions for the implementation of a control strategy against GIN based on the use of tanniferous plants. The project combines research on plant growth and management, animal nutrition and parasitology. The first results, especially those from Onobrychis viciifolia (sainfoin), presented here are encouraging. Depending on the concentration in which they are fed, condensed tannins (CT) can have various beneficial or detrimental effects on ruminants. In organic farming the anthelmintic effects of CT are of special interest. In an outdoor experiment, the sea-sonal dynamics of the CT concentration of the harvestable biomass was investigated as a function of the biomass allocation to leaves and stems in Onobrychis viciifolia, Lotus corniculatus and Cichorium intybus in the course of a vegetation period in Zu-rich, Switzerland. Such knowledge is indispensable for a practical application of tan-niferous plants in farming systems. Sustainable management of foxtail meadows through hay making at seed maturity Organic Eprints

Harvesting meadows at early heading of the grasses yields large quantities of high quality forage but might in the long term cause the swards to deteriorate due to the lack of formation of mature seeds. We studied 4 cutting regimes on a foxtail meadow to define which would maintain the foxtail population naturally and is acceptable in terms of forage quality. The 1st cut of the different cutting regimes was done either at early shooting, shooting, early heading or seed maturity of Alopecurus pratensis L.. The 2nd cut of the 3 first treatments was simultaneous to the 1st cut of the 4th treatment and was ground dried to allow the seeds to fall on the soil. Background and aim Symbiotic dinitrogen (N2) fixation is the most important external N source in organic systems. Our objective was to compare symbiotic N2 fixation of clover grown in organically and conventionally cropped grass-clover leys, while taking into account nutrient supply gradients. Methods We studied leys of a 30-year-old field experiment over 2 years in order to compare organic and conventional systems at two fertilization levels. Tanniferous forage plants can have beneficial effects on ruminant productivity and health (improved protein supply, bloat safety and antiparasitic properties). However, condensed tannins can also lower palatability, voluntary feed intake and digestibility. The aim of our interdisciplinary project was to generate basic knowledge on plant management, feed palatability and the antiparasitic properties of tanniferous forage plants for their practical application in agronomy, focusing on their usefulness in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in organic farming.
