Bird communities in three forest types in the Pernambuco Centre of Endemism, Alagoas, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Lobo-Araújo,Lahert W.; Toledo,Mário T. F.; Efe,Márcio A.; Malhado,Ana C. M.; Vital,Marcos V. C.; Toledo-Lima,Guilherme S.; Macario,Phoeve; Santos,Jhonatan G. dos; Ladle,Richard J..
The Pernambuco Center of Endemism (PCE) in northeastern Brazil is highly fragmented and degraded. Despite its potential conservation importance the bird fauna in this area is still relatively unknown and there are many remnant fragments that have not been systematically surveyed. Here, we report the results of bird surveys in five forest fragments (one pioneer, two ombrophilous and two seasonal). In total, 162 taxa were recorded, 12 of which are endemic to the PCE. The frequency of endangered species was lower than what has been reported in studies from the same area and most of the taxa considered to be at risk of extinction were sub-species of uncertain taxonomic validity. The comparatively low number of endemic/threatened species may be due to the small...

Perceptions of Amazonian deforestation in the British and Brazilian media Acta Amazonica
Ladle,Richard J.; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes; Todd,Peter A.; Malhado,Acacia C. M..
The Amazon rainforest stretches across more than six million square kilometers and nine countries. Of the original forest area it is thought that 18 per cent has been cleared, mainly for farming purposes. In Brazil, the main drivers of deforestation are beef ranching and soya production that together occupy more than 75 per cent of newly deforested land. The situation in the Amazon illustrates a fundamental dilemma facing environmentalists around the world: how to reconcile economic development with biodiversity conservation. In this paper the representation of this dilemma in the British and Brazilian news media is assessed. The results indicate that there were far more articles referring to deforestation in the Brazilian press (816 Brazilian to 29 UK)...
