Measuring cultured fish swimming behaviour: first results on rainbow trout using acoustic telemetry in tanks ArchiMer
Begout, Marie-laure; Lagardere, Jean-paul.
An experiment was conducted to measure swimming activity of rainbow trout (254.0 +/- 33.7 g) held in outdoor tanks under three culture conditions with stocking density used to generate differences: 27 (Culture Density 1, CD1), 80 (CD2) and 136 kg m(-3) (CD3). Fish were fed dry pellets at 1% of tank biomass from 9h00 to 13h00 with automatic feeders. Using acoustic telemetry, fish positions were monitored every 5 s during 48 h for nine fish (three in each treatment). Swimming behaviour was analysed in terms of trajectories: they varied between (i) holding position (high turning angles), (ii) chaotic trajectories (equal use of all turning angles) and (iii) circular swimming (average turning angle of 60degrees). Space utilisation differed for each culture...

Impact of chronic cadmium exposure at environmental dose on escape behaviour in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.; Teleostei, Moronidae) ArchiMer
Faucher, Karine; Fichet, Denis; Miramand, Pierre; Lagardere, Jean-paul.
The effect of chronic exposure to a low concentration (0.5 mu g l(-1)) of cadmium ions was investigated on escape behaviour of sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, using video analysis. Observations were also performed on the microanatomy of lateral system neuromasts. When fish were exposed for 4 h per day over 8 days to the cadmium ions, most of both types of neuromasts observed remained intact. However, some of them presented damaged sensory maculae. Whereas before cadmium exposure, fish responded positively to nearly all the lateral system stimulations, after exposure they decreased by about 10% their positive responses to Stimulations. From the 15th day after the beginning of cadmium exposure, neuromasts presented progressively less damage, cadmium...

Recherches sur l'alimentation des crevettes bathypelagiques du talus continental du Golfe de Gascogne. ArchiMer
Lagardere, Jean-paul.
In the present study, the feeding habits of the bathypelagic shrimps Sergestes arcticus, S. robustus, Pasiphaea sivado, P. tarda, P. multidentata and Psathyrocaris infirma), occurring on the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay, were examined. It was concluded through the present observations that these shrimps use the pelagic resources from the environment. On the other hand, their spatial distribution in different layers prevents any trophic competition between them. The nature of the prey organisms is widely determined by the size, the efficiency of the catching techniques, but also by the possibility of special detection (the hypothesis of ocular detection of euphausiids by P. sivado). The absorption of sediment, during the rest hours, is supposed to...

Influence of water temperature and oxygenation on the aerobic metabolic scope of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Webber, D; Lagardere, Jean-paul; Kerr, S.
Environmental influences (temperature and oxygenation) on cod metabolism and their impact on the ecology of this species were investigated. Limiting oxygen concentration curves (O-2 level ranging between 15 and 100% air saturation) were established at 2, 5 and 10 degreesC. The standard metabolic rate (SMR), the maximum metabolic rate and the metabolic score were then modelled as functions of temperature and/or oxygen saturation. The mean SMR at 2, 5 and 10 degreesC were 19.8 +/- 4.9, 30.8 +/- 6.1 and 54.3 +/- 4.1 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1). respectively. Between 2 and 5 degreesC, the active metabolic rate of cod almost doubled from 65 to 120 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1), to reach 177 mg O-2 h(-1) kg(-1) at 10 degreesC. In terms of metabolic scope (MS), the temperature...

Geographical variation in sound production in the anemonefish Amphiprion akallopisos ArchiMer
Parmentier, E; Lagardere, Jean-paul; Vandewalle, P; Fine, M.
Because of pelagic-larval dispersal, coral-reef fishes are distributed widely with minimal genetic differentiation between populations. Amphiprion akallopisos, a clownfish that uses sound production to defend its anemone territory, has a wide but disjunct distribution in the Indian Ocean. We compared sounds produced by these fishes from populations in Madagascar and Indonesia, a distance of 6500 km. Differentiation of agonistic calls into distinct types indicates a complexity not previously recorded in fishes' acoustic communication. Moreover, various acoustic parameters, including peak frequency, pulse duration, number of peaks per pulse, differed between the two populations. The geographic comparison is the first to demonstrate 'dialects' in a marine...

Spawning sounds in meagre Argyrosomus regius recorded in the Gironde estuary, France ArchiMer
Lagardere, Jean-paul; Mariani, A.
During their spawning period (June to mid-July) in the Gironde estuary, meagre Argyrosomus regius produce two distinct sounds: regular long grunts, the most common calls, and sometimes also short grunts. It is suggested that long grunts serve the formation of spawning aggregations and short grunts announce the beginning of courtship behaviour. The meagre's long grunts include long series of 30-112 closely spaced pulses placed into call units. Each pulse produces multiple and rapidly decaying swimbladder vibrations with a dominant frequency varying between 336 and 444 Hz. Impact of acute cadmium exposure on the trunk lateral line neuromasts and consequences on the "C-start" response behaviour of the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.; Teleostei, Moronidae) ArchiMer
Faucher, Karine; Fichet, Denis; Miramand, Pierre; Lagardere, Jean-paul.
Behavioural responses of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were investigated after exposure to cadmium ions in laboratory-controlled conditions. The aim of this study was to discover whether environmental exposure to cadmium ions inactivates fish lateral line system neuromasts, and to determine the behavioural consequences of such a sensory blockage. For this, fish escape behaviour in response to an artificial water jet was recorded using a 25-frames s(-1) analog video camera before and after cadmium exposure. Experimental set up was tested with fish whose lateral line system was artificially inactivated by antibiotics (gentamicin and streptomycin). Histological analyses with scanning electron microscopy showed antibiotic treatment destroyed lateral line...

Sound production mechanism in carapid fish: first example with a slow sonic muscle ArchiMer
Parmentier, E; Lagardere, Jean-paul; Braquegnier, J; Vandewalle, P; Fine, M.
Fish sonic swimbladder muscles are the fastest muscles in vertebrates and have fibers with numerous biochemical and structural adaptations for speed. Carapid fishes produce sounds with a complex swimbladder mechanism, including skeletal components and extrinsic sonic muscle fibers with an exceptional helical myofibrillar structure. To study this system we stimulated the sonic muscles, described their insertion and action and generated sounds by slowly pulling the sonic muscles. We find the sonic muscles contract slowly, pulling the anterior bladder and thereby stretching a thin fenestra. Sound is generated when the tension trips a release system that causes the fenestra to snap back to its resting position. The sound frequency does not correspond to the...

No efficiency of the lateral system on nocturnal feeding in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) ArchiMer
Faucher, Karine; Dutto, Gilbert; Coves, Denis; Aubert, Anne; Lagardere, Jean-paul.
In order to evaluate the effect and consequence of lateral system inactivation on fish nocturnal feeding, the differential growth of groups of European sea bass maintained in different rearing conditions were compared. Whereas some fish with intact lateral system (placebo fish) were placed under a photoperiod of 12-L: 12-D, other placebo fish were kept in the dark. In the same way, fish deprived of lateral system by section of their lateral system nerves and antibiotic treatment were placed under a photoperiod of 12-L: 12-D and the others in the dark. For each of these four rearing conditions, two sets of experiment were realized. Percent mortality, feed rhythm, averaged daily feed demand, specific growth rate and feed efficiency were compared among these...
