CHANGES IN LAND USE IN MATO GROSSO DO SUL 196
Lamas, Fernando Mendes; Richetti, Alceu.
Among the species cultivated in Mato Grosso do Sul, the area with soybeans is larger than that only for pasture cultivation. This work was developed in fourteen municipalities of the state. Based on information from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the evolution of the area occupied by soybean, pasture and sugarcane in these municipalities was analysed. In particular, the area cultivated with soybeans has shown constant and significant growth. On the other hand, the pasture area has been continuously decreasing, especially in Ponta Porã, Maracaju and Rio Brilhante. The areas previously occupied with pastures are giving way to soy and sugarcane cultivation.

COTTON CULTIVARS X PLANT POPULATION IN MONTIVIDIU, GOIÁS, BRAZIL 196
Rodríguez de la Torre, Elio de Jesús; Lamas, Fernando Mendes.
This study aimed to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative aspects of production in different populations of cotton cultivars. Ten cultivars were evaluated annually in four plant populations. A randomized block design with split plots and three replicates was used. The cultivars were placed in plots, and the plant populations were placed in the subplots. The following characteristics were evaluated: fiber percentage, fiber yield (kg ha-1), fiber length (mm), the micronaire index, the short fiber index (%), and fiber resistance (gf tex-1). In general, the effect of cultivar was much more important than that of the plant population. These results agree with those obtained by several other authors who have claimed that cotton has a high capacity to adapt...

Soil carbon accumulation in cotton production systems in the Brazilian Cerrado Agronomy
Ferreira, Alexandre Cunha de Barcellos; Borin, Ana Luiza Dias Coelho; Lamas, Fernando Mendes; Bogiani, Julio Cesar; Silva, Mellissa Ananias Soler da; Silva Filho, Joao Luis da; Staut, Luiz Alberto.
Sustainable production systems, such as the no-tillage system (NTS), have a tendency to increase organic carbon in the soil. However, in Brazilian cotton production, the conventional tillage system (CTS) is predominant, and long-term studies on cotton crop under the NTS are scarce. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of soil management and crop rotation systems on the cotton fiber yield as well as on the carbon and nitrogen accumulation in the soil. This study was conducted in the Brazilian savanna over 9 years and consisted of the following four treatments with different soil management systems: the NTS and CTS with the succession or rotation of crops (cotton, soybean, maize, and Urochloa ruziziensis). The NTS increased the carbon content by...
