Organic agriculture regulations, in particular European regulation EC 889/2008, prescribe the use of organically produced seed. For many cultivated plants, however, organic seed is often not available. This is mainly because investment in organic plant breeding and seed production has been low in the past. To bridge the gap between organic seed supply and demand, national and European regulations define certain circumstances under which organic producers are permitted to use non-organically produced seed. While the organic sector currently depends on these concessions, they also threaten to impede a further increase in the demand for organic seed, thereby potentially restraining present and future investment in organic seed production and plant breeding.... |

When it comes to discussions on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and organic agriculture, biotechnologists often ask: “Why are your rules so strict? Why ban GMOs when they are the only tool to secure the world’s future need for food? They are more efficient, quicker, etc!” When asked these questions I explain the underlying values of organic agriculture. In this article I will discuss the basic values of organic agriculture as laid down in the IFOAM four basic principles, and will relate them to the field of plant breeding. I also discuss the consequences and challenges for the further development of organic plant breeding. |

Seed is the basis of food crops, and thus for products in shops, and comes with a long history. Plant breeding is developing rapidly, a fact that raises questions among growers, shopkeepers and consumers. In 2015, for the first time European patents were granted to companies for plant varieties and native plant traits, such as for a tomato variety with more healthy substances and a bell pepper variety that is resistant to pest insects. These patents have caused strong social indignation: the free exchange of seeds and plant material with these advantageous qualities is blocked by these patents. As a chain party, at Eosta we are taking a stand against this and support the free breeding in line with the values of organic agriculture as well as our products.... |

The genotype by environment interaction study of broccoli, amongst others demonstrates that traits of a cultivar are sometimes ranked differently when grown in an organic production system compared to a conventional system. This has strong implications for breeding strategies. The breeders interviewed acknowledged that more attention on abiotic and biotic stress resistance in a broccoli breeding programme is needed which is in accordance with the farmers' varietal requirements. The first findings of the field trials show that cultivar performance is influenced by season and region, and differences in treatment (organic versus conventional management). The field trials showed that there are cultivars with broad adaptation such as "Green Goliath". These... |

Organic agriculture requires cultivars that can adapt to organic crop management systems without the use of synthetic pesticides as well as genotypes with improved nutritional value. The aim of this study encompassing 16 experiments was to compare 23 broccoli cultivars for the content of phytochemicals associated with health promotion grown under organic and conventional management in spring and fall plantings in two broccoli growing regions in the US (Oregon and Maine). The phytochemicals quantified included: glucosinolates (glucoraphanin, glucobrassicin, neoglucobrassin), tocopherols (d-, c-, a-tocopherol) and carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, b-carotene). For glucoraphanin (17.5%) and lutein (13%), genotype was the major source of total variation; for... |

The heavy outbreaks of Phytophthora in 2007, and again in 2012, reconfirmed the need for resistant potato varieties for the organic sector. Until recently no such varieties were available. In 2009 the Bioimpulsprogramme was launched to give more priority to breeding organic, Phytophthora-resistant varieties. In this 10-year programme, wild potato species are crossed with cultivated potato to develop new resistant varieties. Although this classical breeding strategy is a long road, the advantage is that you can select for multiple traits along the way. This brochure presents the results of the first four years of the programme. |

In organic agriculture potato volunteers, presenting an important primary inoculum source for late Blight (Phytophthora infestans), are controlled by mechanical meth-ods. These may be partly replaced by ‘foraging’ livestock animals, such as cattle, sheep, horses, ponies or pigs. Most animals eat only the remaining potatoes on the field surface; however, pigs also dig up potatoes. This paper reports on two experi-ments with pigs (sows or finishing pigs), which appear to be very effective in digging up potatoes that are left in the field after the potato harvest within a reasonable time period. However, the workload for the farmer, problems with animal health and meat quality and possible damage to the soil structure seriously limit the applicability of pigs... |

In the Netherlands the organic sector keeps growing, but organic potato production is lagging behind. This is due to the relatively high disease pressure from Phytophthora infestans, which causes foliage and tuber late blight. For organic potato growers this disease still forms a major cropping risk. In the potato breeding programme Bioimpuls, the Louis Bolk Institute and Wageningen UR are working together with breeding companies and farmer-breeders to develop robust cultivars that are resistant to Phytophthora. Thanks to these new cultivars, organic growers now have more chance of yield security. The next step is to collaborate with organic wholesalers and retailers to make sure that the new cultivars reach the shop shelves and consumers’ plates. In the... |

A radical shift in our approach to crop production is needed to ensure food security and to address the problems of soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, polluted and restricted water supplies, coupled with a future of fossil fuel limitations and increasingly variable climatic conditions. An interdisciplinary network of European scientists put forward visions for future crop production embracing the complexity of our socio-ecological system by applying the principle of diversity at all levels from soil micro-organisms to plant varieties and cropping systems. This approach, integrated with careful deployment of our finite global resources and implementation of appropriate sustainable technology, appears to be the only way to ensure the scale of system... |

The ability of the organic farmer’s agronomic toolbox to reduce the susceptibility of a potato crop to late blight is limited, certainly under the Dutch climatic conditions. Conventional breeding programs do not generate either a sufficient number nor appropriate types of resistant varieties for organic systems; and a separate breeding program for the limited area of organic potato production is simply not viable. Therefore, all concerned forces have joined together in an umbrella program called Bioimpuls for organic potato improvement. |
