Relationships between the "Pompeii worms" and their epibiotic bacteria ArchiMer
Gaill, F; Desbruyeres, D; Laubier, L.
The morphological relationship between the so-called "Pompeii worms" (Alvinella caudata and Alvinella pompejana ) and their associated bacteria is described. The results permit an overview of the possible functioning of the biological ensemble constituted by the worm, its tube and the associated bacteria.

Transfert, accumulation et regulation des elements mineraux chez les organismes des sources hydrothermales ArchiMer
Cosson-mannevy, M-a; Cosson, R P; Gaill, F; Laubier, L.
Specimens of Riftia pachyptila and Alvinella pompejana were collected during the Biocyarise expedition to hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise at 13 degree N. Quantitative data describing the concentrations of metals in Riftia pachyptila showed that numerous metals are highly concentrated. Analyses of tissues reveal that the plume and the trophosome are the main sites of metal accumulation. Bioconcentration links with the mineral composition of the vent environment are discussed. Mechanisms for metal detoxication were investigated in both species: the presence of metal-rich granules and metallothionein-like proteins were observed. The role of chemolithotrophic bacteria in these mechanisms is discussed.

Paraonidae (Polychètes sédentaires) de Méditerranée ArchiMer
Laubier, L; Ramos, Jeanete.
The study of various collections of Polychaeta Paraonidae from the Mediterranean (continental shelf, continental slope and abyssal plain) has shown a great interest. Seven species and three subspecies are new to science. One species related to a deep-atlantic previously descaribed species, is new to the Mediterranean. Some morphological comparative studies are carried out for species not existing in the Mediterranean. The 28 species or subspecies reviewed in this work are generally located in the western Mediterranean. Regarding the repartition with depth, four species are strictly located in the abyssal plain, while three others are widely distributed from the first tens of meters to the largest depths. Most of remaining species inhabit the continental...

Microanalyse et hydrothermalisme oceanique. Premiers resultats et perspectives dans le domaine de la biologie ArchiMer
Chassard-bouchaud, C; Boumati, P; Escaig, F; Laubier, L; Desbruyeres, D; Fiala-medioni, A; Outrequin, M; Inglebert, R-l; Galle, P.
Specimens of hydrothermal vent organisms, Alvinella caudata and Bathymodiolus thermophilus were collected in 1982 from 13 degree N and 103 degree W, on the East Pacific Rise at a depth of 2600 m. The elemental composition was determined for some of their soft tissues at the structural and ultrastructural levels. Two microanalytical methods were used: secondary ion mass spectrometry and X-ray spectrometry. As examples, external and digestive epithelium and lumen of the digestive tract of Alvinella caudata and the gill and digestive gland of Bathymodiolus thermophilus were investigated. Intracellular localization of the elements, performed by electron microscopy, showed that spherocrystals and lysosomes were the target organelles of metal concentration....
