Research on the endocrine mechanisms controlling the reproduction processes in the shrimp Penaeus japonicus Bate lead to the study of the effect of some external factors impacting the internal clock on which these mechanisms are tuned, namely temperature and light. Full sexual maturity was obtained in 3 months in culture conditions. Over the three following months, 72 spawns of a total of 960 000 nauplii, obtained with a population of 60 females aged 1 to 2 years old at the beginning of spawning, were counted. |

Over the last three decades, offshore shrimp catches have developed in a very impressive way. An important demand on the international market resulted in a slight rise in the selling prices, and lead to a rise in the exploitation of areas already exploited, as well as a search for new fishing areas. In twenty years, the world total of shrimp fisheries has more than doubled, and reached 1 024 000 tonnes in 1972 (source F.A.O., Statistiques annuelles des pêches); [...] |

The larval and postlarval development of the shrimp Penaeus japoniaus has been studied on the basis of the evolution of nucleic acids, of proteinic compounds, and of digestive enzymes. Cell multiplication was assayed by tracing the evolution of the amount of desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) ; this multiplication was found to be high during nauplius stages. Evolution in time of ribonucleic acid (RNA) was compared with evolution of dry weight and proteins ; the amount of RNA rises considerably during stage zoe. Thus it is thought that during stages nauplius and mysis, cellular hyperplasy takes place, while cellular hypertrophy would aarac- terize stage zoe. The development of a new stock of digestive enzymes takes place during the zoe stage. The variations... |
