We analyze the inter-relationships between body weight outcomes and food expenditures among older Europeans using a simultaneous equation model. Several statistical tests were conducted to assess endogeneity of selected variables, the exogeneity, relevance, and validity of instruments used, and the identification of the model. Our results generally suggest, contrary to normative views, that food-away-from-home expenditure is negatively related to body mass index (BMI). BMI is negatively related to the percentage of food spent away from home. |

This paper investigates the relationship between the consumption of selected food nutrients and various socioeconomic factors in Greece. Linear multiple regression analysis was used to estimate the relationship between the consumption of each nutrient and the socioeconomic factors hypothesized to influence it. Data from the 1993/94 family budget survey were used in the analysis. Results show that nutrient consumption increases when moving to higher income levels, with a decreasing rate. Most socioeconomic factors other than income, also influence nutrient consumption significantly. |

This paper investigates the law of motion for the cross-section distribution of dietary energy supply (DES) in the world. This has been pursued using the distribution approach and a panel of 152 countries for the period 1961-2001. According to the empirical results, persistence in caloric intakes dominates in the short-run. With time, however, upwards mobility gains momentum and the world is moving towards a long-run distribution, which is strongly skewed to the left. The estimated expected first passage times from extreme under-supply to higher intake levels are consistent with speculations that most of the developing countries will attain the 3000 kcal per person per day level by the year 2030. |

This article explores the factors affecting demand for tastes in food. Following Silberberg (1985) we divide demand for food into demand for nutrition and demand for tastes. We first compute the minimum cost required to fulfil the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) of households and attribute the difference of minimum cost from actual expenditures as the expenditure for tastes. Since prices are essential in deriving the minimum cost and data do not allow for the derivation of prices for food consumed away-from-home (FAFH), we also present a way to account for the FAFH expenditure. Data from the 1998/99 Greek Household Expenditure Survey are used. Results indicate a number of socioeconomic factors such as income, household size, urbanization, age and... |

Over the last several years, there has been an increase of several chronic diseases that are linked to dietary and lifestyle factors. Obesity, especially, is rising at an alarming rate in several countries. Due in part to increasing diet related health problems caused, among others, by obesity, nutritional labelling has been regarded as an important topic mainly because it can provide consumers with nutritional information that can be used to make informed and healthier food choices. A number of studies have focused on the empirical perspective of nutritional food label use. None of these studies, however, have focused on developing a theoretical economic model that would adequately describe nutritional food label use based on a utility theoretic... |

Nonparametric (Kernel) regression analysis and micro-data from the Family Budget Survey (FBS) are used in this paper to estimate and to compare the Engel curves for food demand of the urban and the rural households. The empirical results suggest that the Characteristic Substitution Effects (CSEs) are not constant but vary considerably with the total consumption outlay. They also suggest that the Working-Leser hypothesis, according to which shares are linear in logarithmic expenditure, is consistent with the food demand patterns in Greece. |
