The Storegga slides, off Norway, are among the largest submarine slides ever known on a continental slope. The HYDRATECH cruise on N/O Le Suro (i) over capt aimed at a high-resolution survey of an area at the northern boundary of the slides. This survey images in great detail the bottom simulating reflector (BSR) extent and properties, the various fluid escape structures and the sediment deformations. The combination and the quality of the data help to understand the still poorly constrained relationships between fluid escapes, gas hydrates and slope stability in the survey area. |

New high resolution geophysical results from EM1000 swath-bathymetry system and Very High Resolution reflection seismic data are presented. A Neogene tectonical origin of the Hurd Deep and the interplay of erosion, sedimentation during the last glacial, inter-glacial periods are here argued by interpretation of these results in term of geomorphology and sequence stratigraphy. |

Deep marine currents are strongly influenced by climatic changes. They also deposit, rework, and sort sediment, and can generate kilometer-scale sedimentary bodies (drifts). These drifts are made of thoroughly bioturbated, stacked sedimentary sequences called contourites [Gonthier et al., 1984]. As a consequence, change in the direction or intensity of currents can be recorded in the sediments. |

The wide continental shelf of the Gulf of Lion (up to 70 km) has been the object of numerous investigations since the early days of oceanography. Yet, the question of sequences duration, the mechanisms of deposition and factors implied remained unanswered. A study of a very dense grid of Very High Resolution (VHR) seismic reflection (Sparker) data associated with surficial cores both, collected by IFREMER between 1992 and 2001 on the outer shelf and upper slope offshore of Sète in the Languedoc region gives a new insight into these issues. Analysis of the 3D geometry of the sedimentary record reveals a basic depositional pattern consisting of a pair of horizontally juxtaposed and downlapping prisms. Prism PI with low angle clinoforms (<1°) lies on the... |

We report on a reconnaissance analysis of the geochemical composition of authigenic carbonates and sediment samples collected from various seepage sites on the Niger deep-sea fan. Our aim has been to investigate whether evidence for the presence of authigenic carbonates and gas hydrates within sediments is discernible from solid-phase sediment geochemistry. We show that sedimentary Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios can be used to infer the presence of authigenic aragonite (Sr-rich) and Mg-rich carbonate phases (high-Mg calcite, dolomite) in cold seep settings. Using Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios, the proportion (wt.%) of authigenic carbonates in Niger Fan sediments can be calculated from a mixing model between sediment fractions of terrigenous material, biogenic calcite,... |

Multibeam bathymetry and bottom imaging (Simrad EM12D) studies on an area of about 9500 km(2) were conducted over the Pitcairn hotspot near 25degrees10'S, 129degrees 20'W In addition, 15 dives with the Nautile submersible enabled us to obtain ground-true observations and to sample volcanic structures on the ancient ocean crust of the Farallon Plate at 3500-4300 in depths. More than 100 submarine volcanoes overprint the ancient crust and are divided according to their size into large ( > 2000 in in height), intermediate (500-2000 in high) and small ( < 500 in high) edifices. The interpretation of seafloor backscatter imagery accompanied by submersible observations and sampling enabled us to infer that the total volume of submarine lava erupted during... |
