The supply of hydrocarbons oxidizing marine bacteria to petroleum polluted sea water has not resulted in an increase in the hydrocarbons degradation potential of this water. All the allochtone species have disappeared from the dominant microflora seven days after the treatment while the autochtone bacteria show a capacity for adaptation to the petroleum products which needs about four days of petroleum-contact to appear. This confirms the advantage of a fast proliferation of these bacteria in oil slides which could be provoked by supply of immediately assimilable nitrogenous and phosphorised mineral compounds.
