Diagnosing Surface Mixed Layer Dynamics from High-Resolution Satellite Observations: Numerical Insights ArchiMer
Ponte, Aurelien; Klein, Patrice; Capet, Xavier; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Chapron, Bertrand; Lherminier, Pascale.
High-resolution numerical experiments of ocean mesoscale eddy turbulence show that the wind-driven mixed layer (ML) dynamics affects mesoscale motions in the surface layers at scales lower than O(60 km). At these scales, surface horizontal currents are still coherent to, but weaker than, those derived from sea surface height using geostrophy. Vertical motions, on the other hand, are stronger than those diagnosed using the adiabatic quasigeotrophic (QG) framework. An analytical model, based on a scaling analysis and on simple dynamical arguments, provides a physical understanding and leads to a parameterization of these features in terms of vertical mixing. These results are valid when the wind-driven velocity scale is much smaller than that associated with...

The EURO-ARGO ERIC officially set up ArchiMer
Pouliquen, S; Le Traon, Pierre-yves.
In May 2014, the Euro-Argo research infrastructure became a new European legal entity (Euro-Argo ERIC). The objective of the Euro-Argo ERIC is to organize a long term European contribution to the international Argo array of profiling floats. Argo is now the most important global in-situ observing system required to observe and understand the role of the ocean on the earth climate. Euro-Argo is also an essential component of the in-situ infrastructure required for the Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Service (operational oceanography). Euro-Argo will thus develop European contribution to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).

Assessing the impact of multiple altimeter missions and Argo in a global eddy-permitting data assimilation system ArchiMer
Verrier, Simon; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Remy, Elisabeth.
A series of observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) is carried out with a global data assimilation system at 1∕4° resolution using simulated data derived from a 1∕12° resolution free-run simulation. The objective is to not only quantify how well multiple altimeter missions and Argo profiling floats can constrain the global ocean analysis and 7-day forecast at 1∕4° resolution but also to better understand the sensitivity of results to data assimilation techniques used in Mercator Ocean operational systems. The impact of multiple altimeter data is clearly evidenced even at a 1∕4° resolution. Seven-day forecasts of sea level and ocean currents are significantly improved when moving from one altimeter to two altimeters not only on the sea level, but...

Why a chapter on Perspectives and Integration in SOLAS Science in this book? SOLAS science by its nature deals with interactions that occur: across a wide spectrum of time and space scales, involve gases and particles, between the ocean and the atmosphere, across many disciplines including chemistry, biology, optics, physics, mathematics, computing, socio-economics and consequently interactions between many different scientists and across scientific generations. This chapter provides a guide through the remarkable diversity of cross-cutting approaches and tools in the gigantic puzzle of the SOLAS realm. Here we overview the existing prime components of atmospheric and oceanic observing systems, with the acquisition of ocean–atmosphere observables either...

Argo, the international array of profiling floats, is a major component of the global ocean and climate observing system. In 2010, the NAOS (Novel Argo Observing System) project was selected as part of the French “Investissements d’Avenir” Equipex program. The objectives of NAOS were to consolidate the French contribution to Argo’s core mission (global temperature and salinity measurements down to 2000 m), and also to develop the future generation of French Argo profiling floats and prepare the next phase of the Argo program with an extension to the deep ocean (Deep Argo), biogeochemistry (BGC-Argo) and polar seas. This paper summarizes how NAOS has met its objectives. The project significantly boosted France’s contribution to Argo’s core mission by...

Recent advances in observing mesoscale ocean dynamics with satellite altimetry ArchiMer
Morrow, Rosemary; Le Traon, Pierre-yves.
The paper provides a review of recent results on mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 18 year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. Altimetry is often used in mesoscale studies in synergy with other remote sensing techniques and in situ data. This global, high-resolution data set has allowed oceanographers to quantify the previously unknown seasonal and interannual variations in eddy kinetic energy and eddy heat and salt transports, and investigate their causes. Eddy tracking techniques have allowed us to monitor their propagation pathways, to bring to light the meridional divergence of cyclones and anticyclones, and to question the role of Rossby waves versus non-linear...

Euro-Argo Final Report – January 2008 to June 2011 ArchiMer
Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Mamaca, Emina.
ARGO is an international global ocean observing system based on an array of some 3.000 autonomous floats drifting freely in the world’s oceans. Those floats, which probe the water to a depth of 2.000 m and report temperature and salinity data to land stations, constitute one of the essential components of the Global Climate Observing System. They also provide invaluable data in support of ocean and climate research, operational oceanography and ocean monitoring. The system is implemented by a large number of agencies and scientists in over 40 countries. A high level of coordination is necessary to organize efficiently the operations at sea, maintain the array, and to perform the required tasks of data management (e.g. collection, validation and quality...

The CORA dataset: validation and diagnostics of in-situ ocean temperature and salinity measurements ArchiMer
Cabanes, Cecile; Grouazel, Antoine; Von Schuckmann, Karina; Hamon, Michel; Turpin, Victor; Coatanoan, Christine; Paris, Francois; Guinehut, Stephanie; Boone, C.; Ferry, N.; De Boyer Montegut, Clement; Carval, Thierry; Reverdin, Gilles; Pouliquen, Sylvie; Le Traon, Pierre-yves.
The French program Coriolis, as part of the French operational oceanographic system, produces the COriolis dataset for Re-Analysis (CORA) on a yearly basis. This dataset contains in-situ temperature and salinity profiles from different data types. The latest release CORA3 covers the period 1990 to 2010. Several tests have been developed to ensure a homogeneous quality control of the dataset and to meet the requirements of the physical ocean reanalysis activities (assimilation and validation). Improved tests include some simple tests based on comparison with climatology and a model background check based on a global ocean reanalysis. Visual quality control is performed on all suspicious temperature and salinity profiles identified by the tests, and quality...

More than 90% of the heat energy accumulation in the climate system between 1971 and the present has been in the ocean. Thus, the ocean plays a crucial role in determining the climate of the planet. Observing the oceans is problematic even under the most favourable of conditions. Historically, shipboard ocean sampling has left vast expanses, particularly in the Southern Ocean, unobserved for long periods of time. Within the past 15 years, with the advent of the global Argo array of pro ling oats, it has become possible to sample the upper 2,000 m of the ocean globally and uniformly in space and time. The primary goal of Argo is to create a systematic global network of pro ling oats that can be integrated with other elements of the Global Ocean Observing...

Spatial scales of mesoscale variability in the North-Atlantic as deduced from geosat data ArchiMer
Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Rouquet, Mc; Boissier, C.
Two years of Geosat data were used to systematically investigate the mesoscale variability and spatial scales of the North Atlantic. We first calculated sea surface height variability and eddy kinetic energy. These compare well with the eddy kinetic energy obtained with surface drifters. Then the spatial scales of mesoscale variability were characterized in 10° (latitude) × 10° (longitude) areas by their wave number spectra and autocorrelation functions. Comparison with existing in situ data shows good agreement, and it is believed that the total error budget is globally below that of the oceanic signal. The wave number spectra show significant differences as a function of latitude and longitude, and these can be related to different types of forcing...

Impact of multiple altimeter data and mean dynamic topography in a global analysis and forecasting system ArchiMer
Hamon, Mathieu; Greiner, Eric; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Remy, Elisabeth.
Satellite altimetry is one of the main sources of information used to constrain global ocean analysis and forecasting systems. In addition to in situ vertical temperature and salinity profiles, and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data, Sea Level Anomalies (SLA) from multiple altimeters are assimilated through the knowledge of a surface reference, the Mean Dynamic Topography (MDT). The quality of analyses and forecasts mainly depends on the availability of SLA observations and on the accuracy of the MDT. A series of Observing System Evaluations (OSEs) were conducted to assess the relative importance of the number of assimilated altimeters and the accuracy of the MDT in a Mercator Ocean global ¼° ocean data assimilation system. Dedicated tools were used to...

Do altimeter wavenumber spectra agree with the interior or surface quasigeostrophic theory? ArchiMer
Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Klein, Patrice; Hua, Bach-lien; Dibarboure, G.
In high-eddy-energy regions, it is generally assumed that sea level wavenumber spectra compare well with quasigeostrophic (QG) turbulence models and that spectral slopes are close to the expected k(-5) law. This issue is revisited here. Sea level wavenumber spectra in the Gulf Stream, Kuroshio, and Agulhas regions are estimated using the most recent altimeter datasets [the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX)/ Poseidon, Jason-1, the Environmental Satellite (Envisat), and the Geosat Follow-On]. The authors show that spectral slopes in the mesoscale band are significantly different from a k(-5) law, in disagreement with the QG turbulence theory. However, they very closely follow a k(-11/3) slope, which indicates that the surface quasigeostrophic theory (SQG)...

The importance of stakeholder engagement in ocean observation and in particular the realization of economic and societal benefits is discussed, introducing a number of overarching principles such as the convergence on common goals, effective communication, co-production of information and knowledge and the need for innovation. A series of case studies examine the role of coordinating frameworks such as the United States' Interagency Ocean Observing System (IOOS (R)), and the European Ocean Observing System (EGOS), public-private partnerships such as Project Azul and the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) and finally the role of the "third" or voluntary sector. The paper explores the value that stakeholder engagement can bring as well as making...

The roadmap for a GMES operational oceanography mission ArchiMer

Oceans cover approximately 70% of the Earth's surface and, with about 60% of the World's population living within 200 km of the coast, they have an untold impact on all of us. Not surprisingly, for people living close to the coast or those who depend on the ocean for their livelihood, regular forecasts of ocean conditions are just as important as traditional weather forecasts. Therefore, development of the infrastructure needed to support and sustain independent, European operational ocean forecasting, and the associated coastal and marine information services, are key priorities of the joint Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) initiative by the European Commission and ESA.

Estimating the North-Atlantic mean surface-topography by inversion of hydrographic and lagrangian data ArchiMer
Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Mercier, Herle.
The non-linear inverse model described in Mercier et al. (1992) is used to estimate the mean surface topography of the North Atlantic and its formal error. The surface is based on a large hydrographic and Lagrangian data set and has spatial resolution of 2-degrees in latitude by 2.5-degrees in longitude. The formal error is between 4 and 8 cm. Contrary to previous estimations, this takes into account the errors with regard both to the density field and to the estimation of the velocity field at a reference level.
