High-resolution numerical experiments of ocean mesoscale eddy turbulence show that the wind-driven mixed layer (ML) dynamics affects mesoscale motions in the surface layers at scales lower than O(60 km). At these scales, surface horizontal currents are still coherent to, but weaker than, those derived from sea surface height using geostrophy. Vertical motions, on the other hand, are stronger than those diagnosed using the adiabatic quasigeotrophic (QG) framework. An analytical model, based on a scaling analysis and on simple dynamical arguments, provides a physical understanding and leads to a parameterization of these features in terms of vertical mixing. In May 2014, the Euro-Argo research infrastructure became a new European legal entity (Euro-Argo ERIC). The objective of the Euro-Argo ERIC is to organize a long term European contribution to the international Argo array of profiling floats. Argo is now the most important global in-situ observing system required to observe and understand the role of the ocean on the earth climate. Euro-Argo is also an essential component of the in-situ infrastructure required for the Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Service (operational oceanography). Euro-Argo will thus develop European contribution to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). |

Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 18 year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. The French program Coriolis, as part of the French operational oceanographic system, produces the COriolis dataset for Re-Analysis (CORA) on a yearly basis. This dataset contains in-situ temperature and salinity profiles from different data types. The latest release CORA3 covers the period 1990 to 2010. Several tests have been developed to ensure a homogeneous quality control of the dataset and to meet the requirements of the physical ocean reanalysis activities (assimilation and validation). Two years of Geosat data were used to systematically investigate the mesoscale variability and spatial scales of the North Atlantic. We first calculated sea surface height variability and eddy kinetic energy. These compare well with the eddy kinetic energy obtained with surface drifters. Then the spatial scales of mesoscale variability were characterized in 10° (latitude) × 10° (longitude) areas by their wave number spectra and autocorrelation functions. In high-eddy-energy regions, it is generally assumed that sea level wavenumber spectra compare well with quasigeostrophic (QG) turbulence models and that spectral slopes are close to the expected k(-5) law. This issue is revisited here. Sea level wavenumber spectra in the Gulf Stream, Kuroshio, and Agulhas regions are estimated using the most recent altimeter datasets [the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX)/ Poseidon, Jason-1, the Environmental Satellite (Envisat), and the Geosat Follow-On]. The non-linear inverse model described in Mercier et al. (1992) is used to estimate the mean surface topography of the North Atlantic and its formal error. The surface is based on a large hydrographic and Lagrangian data set and has spatial resolution of 2-degrees in latitude by 2.5-degrees in longitude. The formal error is between 4 and 8 cm.
