Physical habitat simulation for small-sized characid fish species from tropical rivers in Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Hersília de Andrade e; Leal,Cecília Gontijo; Pompeu,Paulo Santos; Chaves,Ceceo; Cunha,Stephanie Fernandes.
ABSTRACT Physical habitat simulation (PHABSIM) is an important step of the instream flow incremental methodology (IFIM), which is applied to establish environmental flow regimes. This study applied the PHABSIM in two reaches of the Velhas river basin, whose long-term discharges are similar but are under different degrees of impact. Suitability curves were obtained for fish species using traditional methods (Astyanax sp., Piabarchus stramineus, Piabina argentea and Serrapinnus heterodon) and generalized additive models for fish density (Astyanax sp., P. argentea and S. heterodon). The results of habitat use depended on the method for curves generation. Applying the suitability curves by traditional methods, different discharge scenarios were simulated. The...

Morphological diversity of fish along the rio das Velhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Junqueira,Nara Tadini; Leal,Cecília Gontijo; Alves,Carlos Bernardo Mascarenhas; Pompeu,Paulo Santos.
The rio das Velhas, located in central Minas Gerais State (Brazil), is a major tributary of the rio São Francisco. Despite several anthropogenic pressures, this basin supports more than 115 fish species. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological space occupied by fish assemblages in four regions (headwaters, upper, middle, and lower course) along the channel of the rio das Velhas. We try to answer the following question: Is there a change in the morphological organization of the fish along the longitudinal gradient of the river? Individuals from 67 species, collected at several sites in the basin from 1999 to 2008, were measured for 11 morphological attributes related to swimming behavior and habitat use. Through the graphs, the first two...

The stream fish fauna from three regions of the Upper Paraná River basin Biota Neotropica
Fagundes,Daniela Cristina; Leal,Cecília Gontijo; Carvalho,Débora Reis de; Junqueira,Nara Tadini; Langeani,Francisco; Pompeu,Paulo dos Santos.
This study aimed to conduct an inventory of fish assemblages in small streams that are tributaries of large reservoirs in three previously unstudied regions of the Upper Paraná River basin. We sampled 117 streams from 1st to 3rd order in Araguari (Nova Ponte hydropower plant reservoir), Paranaíba (São Simão reservoir) and Grande (Volta Grande reservoir) drainages. In total, 20,696 specimens belonging to 100 species, 53 genera, 20 families and six orders were collected. Of these, 11,530 specimens and 41 species were recorded in Araguari, whereas 17 were exclusive to this drainage. In Grande drainage, 3,537 individuals belonging to 41 species (11 exclusive) and in Paranaíba, 5,629 specimens and 67 species (38 exclusive) were sampled. The mean richness per...
