Effects of Price and Quality Differences in Source Differentiated Beef on Market Demand AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
In order to estimate demand elasticities of source differentiated beef in South Korea, this study used the quantity of an endogenous demand system derived through maximizing the economic welfare of market participants including local beef consumers and local and foreign beef suppliers. The demand system is then weighted with respect to quality adjustment parameters to identify the effects of quality differences in source differentiated beef on market demand. As implied by the high relative price of locally produced ‘‘Hanwoo’’ beef, substitutability between local and imported beef is shown to be very weak and the own price elasticity of South Korean beef is shown to be inelastic. Related to quality differences between source differentiated beef, South...

An Empirical Investigation of Interproduct Relationships Between Domestic and Imported Seafood in the U.S. AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study seeks to identify interproduct relationships between domestic catfish and a representative selection of imported seafood. In doing so, this study uses multivariate cointegration and structural analyses. Multivariate cointegration analysis suggests that six imported seafood product groupings form a common market with domestic catfish. Structural analysis reveals that 1) domestic and imported catfish are net and gross quantity substitutes; 2) domestic catfish and imported seafood are normal goods; 3) six imported seafood products are identified as gross quantity substitutes for domestic catfish; and 4) according to the derived Allais coefficients, interaction intensities of imported seafood for domestic catfish (from greatest to least) are as...

IMPLICIT PRICE AND DEMAND IN OLIGOPOLISTIC COMPETITION: AN APPLICATION TO THE U.S. TROUT MARKET AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
This study provides an example of how implicit price and demand models can be developed and used for empirical analysis. In particular, empirical application of these models can quantify the impact of implicit economic variables representing preference, relative price, production efficiency, the degree of price sensitivity to quantity supplied, and substitutability on market price and demand for domestic and imported products. Furthermore, the simultaneous impact of these implicit economic variables on market price and demand can be quantified using these implicit price and demand models.

Effects of Catfish, Crawfish, and Shrimp Imports on U.S. Domestic Prices AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
Recent increases in imports of catfish, crawfish, and shrimp have caused concern as to their impact on domestic prices. This study seeks to identify the linkages between imports of these goods and producer prices. Increases in imports of catfish and shrimp are shown to decrease related domestic prices. However, recent trends show a simultaneous increase in both imports and domestic prices of crawfish.

NORTH KOREAN FOOD SUPPLY AND DEMAND: AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
This study simulates North Korean food supply and demand using an econometric regression based upon neo-classical economic theory. In doing so, this study at first describes the autarky condition that exists in the closed economy of North Korea and the relationship between pro-military oriented economic policy and deficiency in the dietary needs required by the average North Korean. This study then quantifies the impact agricultural resources and policy have had on the production of food for the sample period of 1995 to 2008. Results show that food production decreases along with a decrease in agricultural input factors and with the implementation of a more pro-military oriented economic policy. Finally, this study simulates ex ante food balance. In order...

AN ANALYSIS AS TO THE CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BIOETHANOL EXPANSION AND AGRICULTURAL CROP ACREAGE ALLOCATION IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study analyzes the historical price response of individual crop acreage in order to determine the impacts of an expansionist policy in bioethanol production on the U.S. agricultural industry. In doing this, this study provides an economic foundation by using a traditional Rotterdam model to simulate a cropland demand system. Within the developed framework, this study estimates own and cross acreage elasticities and scale elasticities to show the impacts of acreage values on crop production and the relationship between total cropland and individual crop acreage. This study found that rice farming is most inelastic to own acreage value. Soybeans, hay, and wheat are shown to be good substitute crops for corn. Corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, cotton, barley,...

Demand System Analysis of the South Korean Beef Market with the Free Trade Demand Model AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
In this study a demand system analysis for beef in South Korea is constructed. A free trade demand system was used in which the economic welfare of market participants are maximized. Recognizing implicit discrimination about non-locally sourced beef products, this study deduces market demand equations with respect to consumer preference in order to identify the marginal effect of change consumer preference has on market demand.

Theoretical Examination of the Conditions of Best Management Practices Adoption and the Easing of Trade Distortion for Sugar AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae.
In this study it is examined to see that if the government subsidy compensating for the additional cost of adopting best management practices (BMP) is equal to marginal net benefit, will farmers then try to adopt BMP at every level of TRQ and FMA without exhibiting concerns over the form of their production function and, also, will this then imply an ability on the part of the government to lighten importing and market restrictions on sugar.

MEASUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTABILITY BETWEEN U.S. DOMESTIC CATFISH AND IMPORTED FISH AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study examines p-interdependence and quantifies q-substitutability between domestic catfish and different species of imported fish in the U.S. fish market. In doing so, this study uses cointegration analyses for p-interdependence and structural analyses for q-substitutability. Cointegration analysis identifies the long run price equilibria between U.S. domestic catfish and different species of imported fish. The structural analyses show a degree of q-substitutability.

Determining the Impact of Crawfish Imports on U.S. Domestic Prices AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
The study identifies the linkage between imports and the domestic price of crawfish. The results show a simultaneous increase in imports and domestic prices of crawfish while showing a negative relationship between domestic landings and price. Each model shows that there is a seasonality effect on the domestic price of crawfish. The study also shows that increases in the domestic supplies of shrimp, tilapia, and clams generated increases in the domestic crawfish price while increases in imported and domestic supplies of beef and imported supplies of pork decreased the domestic crawfish price.

IMPACTS OF EXHCHANGE RATE ON TERMS OF TRADE AND VOLUME OF TRADE AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
Direct and indirect effects of exchange rates on foreign and home prices may induce a change in terms of trade and volume of trade. In particular, the price effect in substitutability between foreign and home products and endogeneity of the foreign price provide evidence for the indirect impact of the exchange rate on home price. Furthermore, elasticity of substitution and degree of returns to scale influence the impact of the exchange rate on terms of trade and trade volume. In an empirical examination of the Korean beef market, this study found a decrease in terms of trade and an increase in volume of trade when the U.S. dollar depreciates, and an increase in terms of trade and a decrease in volume of trade when the U.S. dollar appreciates. However, the...

An Examination of Inverse Demand Models: An Application to the U.S. Crawfish Industry AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study analyzes quantity impacts of imported crawfish tailmeat on Louisiana crawfish tailmeat prices, and demonstrates the statistical validity and proper interpretation of cross substitution within inverse demand systems. Among five inverse demand systems, the Differential Inverse National Bureau of Research (DINBR) model shows no violation of econometric assumptions for the data analyzed. By using Allais coefficients proposed by Barten and Bettendorf (1989), we show substitutability among the five fish species.

IMPORT DEMAND SYSTEM ANALYSIS OF THE SOUTH KOREAN WINE MARKET WITH THE SOURCE DIFFERENTATED AIDS MODEL AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
Under the assumption of block substitutability and partial aggregation, a source differentiated AIDS model was used to estimate South Korean wine import demand. Empirical results indicate that South Korean wine consumers have a strong preference for high quality French wines. French wines are shown to be substitutes for wines from other countries in the South Korean wine market. Since the implementation of a free trade agreement between South Korea and Chile, Chilean wines have steadily increased their market share exhibiting strong price competitiveness in the South Korean wine market.
