| At the moment the occurrence of Juncus mutabilis and J. capitatus is mainly determined by activities of man (excavations) and by extreme fluctuations in climatic factors (the occurrence of very low water levels in summer). In the summer of 1972 and 1973 the water levels on the island of Terschelling were very low. As a consequence some small dune lakes were left dry and J. mutabilis was growing abundantly in two of them, where previously it was absent or of sporadic occurrence. In 1972 and 1973 J. mutabilis was also recorded from two other places, where it occurs in small numbers each year. | De ontwikkeling van het vegetatiekundig onderzoek heeft in de laatste 10 jaar althans in ons land geen gelijke tred gehouden met de daarvoor in sommige gevallen noodzakelijke uitbouw van het terminologisch apparaat. Het mag sommige buitenstaanders misschien voorkomen, dat de terminologie van de vegetatiekunde reeds rijkelijk ingewikkeld is. Dit is echter slechts schijn. Weliswaar bestaat er een indrukwekkende reeks van termen, doch de meeste hiervan spelen in de practijk van het onderzoek geen enkele rol, en zijn slechts bedacht om er zich van te kunnen bedienen in extreme en vaak gezochte probleemstellingen. | Op 8 okt 1960 vond de heer J.C. Tanis, custos van het Biologisch Station “Schellingerland” op Terschelling, in de nabijheid van dit Station een bloeiend exemplaar van Erica cinerea L. Na opzending van een bloeiende tak via ondergetekenden naar het Rijksherbarium werd deze determinatie bevestigd. Deze opmerkelijke waarneming geeft aanleiding tot commentaar, temeer, daar men op het eerste gezicht geneigd is, hier enig verhand te zien met de ontdekking van twee andere, mediterraan-atlantische, Erica-soorten in dezelfde omgeving, te weten E. scoparia L. door Th.J. Reichgelt in 1952 (zie van Ooststroora en Reichgelt 1956) en E. ciliaris L. door P. Runge in 1955 (zie Runge 1956, van Ooststroom en Reichgelt 1956). |

| The mediterranean-atlantic species Catapodium marinum (L.) Hubbard reaches its northern limit on the continent in the Netherlands. Up to 1959 only 2 localities on the Dutch coast were known. In 1961 the species was discovered in large quantities on the brackish estuary shore of the island of Goeree, by far the richest occurrence in the country. The habitat in the three Dutch localities is similar: low, sandy, dry, irregularly submersed dunes in the ecotone between xerosere and halosere, with fluctuating, but mostly low, salt content and rather high lime content; i.e. in the dry desalinated “Koelerion”-variant of the Saginetum maritimae.
