| This paper describes the successful field test of the NADIA (Navette de Diagraphie, which means logging shuttle) wireline reentry system, an apparatus designed and built by IFREMER (Institut Francaise de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer) to place instruments and to carry out well logging in boreholes in the deep sea without a drill ship. The Campagne FARE (Faisabilite Re‐Entree) field tests in July 1988 in DSDP (Deep Sea Drilling Project) Hole 396B (near the Kane Fracture Zone at the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge (Figure 1)) demonstrated the feasibility of routine reentry and logging in a water depth of 4455 m. |

| The automated monitoring of physico-chemical parameters in the coastal zone has been using large buoys and fixed infrastructures. A better understanding of many estuaries is needed in order to fulfil the agenda and requirements of the European Water Framework Directive. In order to address the fluxes of nutrients as well as algal blooms and low oxygen events, the "TROPHIMATIQUE" project has developed a new generation of instruments able to be deployed in sea waters. The smaller size of the new instruments is intended to facilitate the maintenance. A new multi-parameter probe has been developed. | Les progrès observés dans la connaissance des sciences de la mer sont dus pour une grande part à l'évolution de l'instrumentation et en particulier aux capteurs. En océanographie les capteurs recouvrent l'ensemble des instruments susceptibles de donner des représentations quantitatives des grandeurs physiques, chimiques ou biologiques de l'eau de mer. La définition et la réalisation de tels équipements exigent de faire appel à toutes les composantes des sciences de l'ingénieur et les informations résultantes intéressent l'ensemble des disciplines de l'océanographie. |
