Facial nerve ganglioneuroblastoma in a feline leukemia virus-positive cat Ciência Rural
Pereira,Paula Reis; Tagliari,Nelson Junior; Leite-Filho,Ronaldo Viana; Schaefer,Gabriela da Cruz; Costa,Fernanda Vieira Amorim da; Pavarini,Saulo Petinatti.
ABSTRACT: Neuroblastic tumors can originate from the central neuraxis, olfactory epithelium, adrenal medullary region or autonomous system. Ganglioneuroblastoma are a type of neuroblastic tumor, with very few case descriptions in animals. Diagnosis of facial nerve ganglioneuroblastoma was made in a feline leukemia virus-positive 11-month-old cat. The cat had hyporexia, left head tilt, depressed mental state, horizontal nystagmus, inability to retract the pinched left lip, anisocoria, ptosis, and absence of the menace reflex. Gross necropsy showed a mass at the left facial nerve root region. Histological examination of this mass showed neoplastic proliferation of neuroblasts arranged in a cohesive pattern and mature ganglion cells. Ganglion cells were...

Subzygomatic and infraorbital approaches for maxillary nerve blockade in cats’ cadaver Ciência Rural
Becerra,José Ricardo Herrera; Tisotti,Tainor de Mesquita; Baier,Maria Eduarda; Leite-Filho,Ronaldo Viana; Mombach,Verônica Santos; Costa,Fernanda Vieira Amorim da; Monteiro,Eduardo Raposo.
ABSTRACT: This study compared the accuracy of dye placement on the maxillary nerve by using the percutaneous subzigomatic (SBZ) and infraorbitary (IO) approaches in cats’ cadavers. A second aim was to compare the accuracy of dye placement on the maxillary nerve between different untrained anesthetists. This was a prospective, randomized, blinded study, performed in 40 heads obtained from feline cadavers. Three veterinarians (A, B and C) with no previous experience with the IO approach performed the experiments. The SBZ approach was randomly performed on one side of the head and the IO approach was performed in the contralateral side of the same head. For each approach, 0.2ml of 1% methylene blue dye was injected. Scores for length of nerve staining were as...

Rangeliosis: histopathological analysis, hematology and molecular detection of canine Rangelia vitalii in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Fredo,Gabriela; Leite-Filho,Ronaldo Viana; Pietzsch,Camila De Ávila; Andrade,Caroline Pinto de; Duda,Naila Cristina Blatt; Nascimento,Lismara Castro do; Valle,Stella de Faria; Soares,João Fábio; Sonne,Luciana.
ABSTRACT: In the period from January 2004 to December 2015, 56 dogs were diagnosed with rangeliosis in the Setor de Patologia Veterinária at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (SPV-UFRGS). The main hematological abnormalities were thrombocytopenia and anemia. The affected dogs showed signs of apathy, anorexia, fetid and bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. At necropsy, the main changes were jaundice, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and lymphadenomegaly. Histological analyses revealed parasitophorous vacuoles of Rangelia vitalii in cytoplasmic endothelial cells, mainly in the heart, kidneys, lymph nodes, intestines, and pancreas. Inflammation characterized by mononuclear cells was predominant in the analysis, and most was due to the presence of...
