In 2000, and after a long period of gestation, an offshore oyster farming experiment, on depths of 10 to 20 meters, started in the Pertuis Charentais. It faced strong opposition from fishermen, without the unanimous support of oyster farmers. In this context, an analysis of the rationalities in place seemed to be able to help to better understand the positions of the various actors. Monographies of fishing and oyster firms have been carried out using methods developed for family farms. Following them, so-called functioning typologies have classified the farms according to their evolution capacities. The Marennes Oléron basin is reaching saturation point of its oyster parks. In order to unblock tbose parks, sorne studies have been engaged at the lev el of breeding in deep waters, a technique which has been used in Brittany for a long time. Unfortunately, zones which are studied for the putting into place of that technique correspond with sectors which are claimed by fishermen. That problem is source of conflict between the two professions. The tolerance of glass - eel fishing is one of numerous other questions which affect the two communities.
