Indentation of the Philippine Sea plate by the Eurasia plate in Taiwan: Details from recent marine seismological experiments ArchiMer
Lallemand, Serge; Theunissen, Thomas; Schnurle, Philippe; Lee, Chao-shing; Liu, Char-shine; Font, Yvonne.
We analyze in this study a new set of marine data including 3D local tomography, 1992-2008 relocated earthquakes and two recent multichannel seismic lines to characterize the deformation style in the collision area offshore east Taiwan. We have mapped in detail the Mohos of the converging plates as well as the subduction interface with a resolution never reached before. We show that the sharp continental subduction of the Eurasia plate, beneath the middle part of the Central Range, indents the Philippine Sea plate (PSP) as attested by intra-oceanic slicing and incipient subduction of the PSP beneath the east coast of Taiwan. The westernmost part of the PSP slab is probably experiencing a beginning of break-off as attested by NW-trending en-echelon shear...

Swath bathymetry reveals active arc-continent collision near Taiwan ArchiMer
Lallemand, Serge E.; Liu, Char-shine; Act Cruise Scientific Team,.
A joint French‐Taiwanese cruise in May and June 1996 on the French research vessel L'Atalante has provided detailed structural images of the sea floor east and southwest of Taiwan. High quality swath bathymetry (see Figure 1) and seismic reflection profiles collected in southeastern and southwestern offshore areas near Taiwan will increase our understanding of how the Luzon Arc is deformed by its collision with the Chinese passive margin and how the Manila Trench connects with the deformation front on Taiwan. The data collected off the eastern coast of Taiwan will elucidate the nature of the plate boundary between the Ryukyu subduction zone and the Taiwan mountain belt and reveal the mode of back arc opening in the Southern Okinawa Trough. The...

Numerical modeling of gas hydrate emplacements in oceanic sediments ArchiMer
Schnurle, Philippe; Liu, Char-shine.
We have implemented a 2-dimensional numerical model for simulating gas hydrate and free gas accumulation in marine sediments. The starting equations are those of the conservation of the transport of momentum, energy, and mass, as well as those of the thermodynamics of methane hydrate stability and methane solubility in the pore-fluid. These constitutive equations are then integrated into a finite element in space, finite-difference in time scheme. We are then able to examine the formation and distribution of methane hydrate and free gas in a simple geologic framework, with respect to the geothermal heat flow, fluid flow, the methane in-situ production and basal flux. Three simulations are performed, leading to the build up of hydrate emplacements largely...

Structural controls on the formation of BSR over a diapiric anticline from a dense MCS survey offshore southwestern Taiwan ArchiMer
Schnurle, Philippe; Liu, Char-shine; Lin, Andrew T.; Lin, Saulwood.
A dense seismic reflection survey with up to 250-m line-spacing has been conducted in a 15 × 15 km wide area offshore southwestern Taiwan where Bottom Simulating Reflector is highly concentrated and geochemical signals for the presence of gas hydrate are strong. A complex interplay between north–south trending thrust faults and northwest–southeast oblique ramps exists in this region, leading to the formation of 3 plunging anticlines arranged in a relay pattern. Landward in the slope basin, a north–south trending diapiric fold, accompanied by bright reflections and numerous diffractions on the seismic profiles, extends across the entire survey area. This fold is bounded to the west by a minor east-verging back-thrust and assumes a symmetric shape, except at...

Production, consumption, and migration of methane in accretionary prism of southwestern Taiwan ArchiMer

To systematically quantify the production, consumption and migration of methane along a continental margin, 210 sediment cores were collected from offshore southwestern Taiwan and analyzed for their gas and aqueous geochemistry. These data, combined with published results, were used to calculate the diffusive methane fluxes across different geochemical transitions and to develop scenarios of mass balance to constrain deep microbial and thermogenic methane production rates within the accretionary prism. The results showed that methane diffusive fluxes ranged from 2.71 × 10−3 to 2.78 × 10−1 and from ‒1.88 × 10−1 to 3.97 mmol m−2 d−1 at the sulfate-methane-transition-zone (SMTZ) and sediment-seawater interfaces, respectively. High methane fluxes tend to be...

New gravity and magnetic anomaly maps in the Taiwan-Luzon region and their preliminary interpretation ArchiMer
Hsu, Shu-kun; Liu, Char-shine; Shyu, Chuen-tien; Liu, Shao-yung; Sibuet, Jean-claude; Lallemand, Serge; Wang, Chensung; Reed, Donald.
We have compiled new free-air gravity anomaly (FAA) and magnetic anomaly maps, shedding light on the tectonics in the Taiwan-Luzon region. To have a suitable datum level for both the available gravity and magnetic anomaly data, the set of data from an ACT cruise, conducted during May 27 to June 21, 1996, was chosen as a reference. Based on the cross-over error analysis, all the other data were adjusted accordingly. Some satellite-derived, airborne or land data were also added to the compilation to obtain better coverage. Several major new insights into the Taiwan-Luzon region are revealed by the new maps. (1) A prominent NE-SW trending belt of gravity and magnetic anomalies is present in the onshore and offshore areas of southwestern Taiwan. The Peikang...

Okinawa trough backarc basin: Early tectonic and magmatic evolution ArchiMer
Sibuet, Jean-claude; Deffontaines, Benoît; Hsu, Shu-kun; Thareau, Nicolas; Le Formal, Jean-pierre; Liu, Char-shine; Act Party,.
The Okinawa Trough, lying between Japan and Taiwan, is a backarc basin formed by extension within the continental lithosphere behind the Ryukyu trench-are system. Stress directions associated with the two last extensional phases in the southwestern Okinawa Trough have been deduced from a comparison with analog modeling: the direction of extension is N150 degrees for the Pleistocene phase of extension (2-0.1 Ma) and N170 degrees for the late Pleistocene-Holocene phase of extension (0.1-0 Ma). The present-day Ryukyu volcanic are, a narrow continuous feature extending from Japan to Taiwan, is located on the eastern side of the Okinawa Trough, 80-100 km above the Wadati-Benioff zone, the minimum depth for emplacement of are magmatism. Scarce present-day...
