Methodological aspects of determination of biological N-fixation of different forage legumes [Methodische Aspekte der Bestimmung der biologischen N-Fixierung verschiedener Futterleguminosen] Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Knowledge about the amount of fixed nitrogen of different legume crops is very important for calculation of farm N balances. According to literature the choice of determination method may have an impact on the estimated amount of N fixed by a legume sward. The aim of the study was to compare the three most important field methods for determination of nitrogen fixation under different sward management systems. In the present study the natural 15N abundance method gave lower fixation rates than the two alternative methods (total-N-difference method and 15N enrichment technique). The determination of N fixation based only on N in harvestable plant material underestimated the amount of fixed N on average by 70 kg × ha-1 compared to techniques including also...

Einfluss unterschiedlicher Kleegrasnutzungssysteme auf Ertrag, Sortierung und Qualität ökologisch erzeugter Verarbeitungskartoffeln Organic Eprints
Krause, Tanja; Böhm, Herwart; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm; Haase, Norbert U..
The most organic produced potatoes are used for direct marketing or home requirements. But due to the growing demand for “Convenience-products” like potato crisps and chips the production of processing potatoes offers farmers an alternative. In contrast to conventional agriculture the nutrient supply in organic potato production must be secured by preceding crops or organic fertilization. Clover grass as preceding crop is common in praxis. But as the case may be how the clover grass is utilized (mulching, cut mowing) a different nitrogen fixation and mineralization is possible. In a period of two years (2003/2004) the effect of different clover grass management systems on yield, grading and quality of processing potatoes was under examination on the...

Methodische Aspekte zur Bestimmung der symbiontischen N2-Fixierungsleistung von Leguminosen Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Ingwersen, Kathrin; Taube, Friedhelm.

Dinitrogen fixation and residue nitrogen of different managed legumes and nitrogen uptake of subsequent winter wheat [N2-Fixierung und residualer Stickstoff verschiedener Futterleguminosen sowie N-Aufnahme der Folgefrucht Winterweizen.] Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Kaske, A.; Taube, F..
Fixed nitrogen accumulated by legumes is the main nitrogen source for organic farming systems. Knowledge about the amount of fixed nitrogen, its pathways into forage yield, crop residues, soil-N and yield formation of the following crop is needed for designing crop rotations. Two field experiments were conducted in Northern Germany with differently managed (cut, mulched) legumes (red clover, alfalfa, white clover) in pure stands and various mixtures with two companion grasses (Lolium multiflorum, Lolium perenne) have been grown to determine N2-fixation, residue nitrogen and N-uptake of subsequent crops. Cropped grass/legume reached higher N2-fixation than mulched. While green manure grass/legume left up to 280 kg ha-1 of N in mulch, stubble and...

Nitrate leaching and energy efficiency of stockless arable systems compared with mixed farming and a non-organic system on fertile soils in Northern Germany Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Kelm, Michael; Taube, Friedhelm.
Previous studies based on either small-scale plot experiments or modelling approaches, indicate a lower risk of nitrate leaching and a higher energy efficiency in organic than in conventional farming systems. Because there is still a lack of data measured at the farm scale, which also take farm type and farming practices into account, a comparison between an N-intensive non-organic, two organic all-arable crop rotations and a typical rotation of a mixed organic farm was carried out over a three-year period at a highly productive site in Northern Germany. Comparing the all-arable crop rotations, the organic systems had 70% lower potential yields than the regional typical conventional crop rotation. In spite of 60% lower input of fossil energy an N-intensive...

Zum Nutzungspotential alternativer Leguminosen und Wiesenkräuter – unter besonderer Berücksichtigung sekundärer Pflanzeninhaltsstoffe Organic Eprints
Hamacher, Maike; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Legumes and herbs are able to contribute to productivity and biodiversity in forage production. Besides they are known for beneficial properties for nutritive value and animal health. In the present study the potential yield and forage quality of eight legumes, four herbs and perennial ryegrass were tested under growing conditions in northern Germany. Due to their ability to bind protein and affect ruminal fermentation in a favourable manner, concentration of condensed tannins (CT) and total phenols (TP) were measured. Regarding some forage quality parameters, herbs and alternative legumes were equal or even exceed standard species. In general, herbs were lower in dry matter yield and crude protein, but higher in energy content and TP. Highest TP were...

Autumn sown catch crop understoreys as strategy to reduce nitrate leaching in winter cereals Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Mauscherning, Inken; Taube, Friedhelm.
Under conditions with wet mild winters due to high nitrate leaching risk growing systems with high nitrogen (N) uptake efficiency in autumn are necessary, especially after pre crops with a high N release. In 2003 and 2004 a field trial was conducted in Northern Germany to investigate autumn N uptake and nitrate leaching in autumn sown winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) grown intercropped with catch crops. Catch crops in pure stands were sown as control. In each system three catch crops common vetch (Vicia sativa), forage rape (Brassica napus) and oats (Avena sativa) were tested simultaneously. The experiment was run parallel after grass clover (high N status) and oats (low N status). N uptake, soil mineral nitrogen...

Ausgewählte Parameter der Ökoeffizienz im ökologischen und konventionellen Marktfruchtbau Schleswig-Holsteins Organic Eprints
Biernat, Lars; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Approximately 13 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany are caused by agricultural practices. From an environmental and economic point of view, gaseous N losses as well as nitrate leaching to groundwater play, a significant role. The aim of the present study is to analyze abiotic environmental effects of organic and conventional all-arable farming at a highly productive site in Northern Germany. Two different organic crop rotations with 25% vs. 40% legumes and no application of external N-fertilizers were compared over a two-year period to a typical site specific conventional rotation at an average mineral fertilser input of 195 kg N ha-1 a-1. For gas flux measurement, the closed-chamber method was applied. Nitrate leaching was measured by...

Production of potato crisps and chips in organic farming: Effect of sprinkler irrigation, manure and preceeding crop management of clover grass on yield and quality Organic Eprints
Krause, Tanja; Böhm, Herwart; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedrich; Haase, Norbert U..
In contrast to conventional agriculture the nutrient supply in organic potato production must be secured by preceding crop or organic fertilization. On lighter sites nitrogen mineralisation of organic fertilisation depends highly on water supply. Over two years field experiments with sprinkler irrigation relating to different manure fertilization and varied clover grass management systems (mulching, cut mowing) has been conducted and effects on yield, grading and qualitative properties of processing potatoes has been surveyed. The tested clover grass management systems showed only a low effect on yield and quality on the following crop potato. In 2003 a small yield increase was achieved by the mulching system. In the dry year 2003 the sprinkler...

Teil: Kleegrasmanagement Organic Eprints
Krause, Tanja; Böhm, Herwart; Loges, Ralf; Haase, Norbert U..

Effect of Different Defoliation Systems of Ryegrass–Clover on Yield and Selected Quality Parameters of Organic Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) for Industrial Processing at Harvest and After Storage Organic Eprints
Dresow, Jana; Krause, Tanja; Haase, Norbert U.; Loges, Ralf; Heß, Jürgen; Böhm, Herwart.
The nitrogen supply plays an important role in achieving quality characteristics in organic potato farming. Different defoliation systems of ryegrass–clover may influence the amount of fixed nitrogen available to the tubers. In a field experiment, the effect of different defoliation systems (cutting, mulching and a combination of them) of the pre-crop ryegrass–clover on selected quality attributes of organically grown potatoes, destined for processing into French fries (cv. Agria) or crisps (cv. Marlen), were conducted in two consecutive years (2003 and 2004). Parameters studied included compounds related to the sensory properties of potato food (tuber dry matter, starch, reducing sugars) as well as nutritional quality (nitrogen, minerals). Selected...

Langfristige Effekte einer Grünlanderneuerungsmaßnahme auf den Bodenkohlenstoffgehalt und die N2O-Emissionen Organic Eprints
Biegemann, Thorsten; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
An increased demand for renewable raw materials for food and energy production has led to an increased intensification of agricultural production in northern Europe. Grassland, as well as arable production, has been affected by this development. Extensive grassland swards are often renovated with the aim of improving herbage yield and quality. The renovation of grassland leads to a reduction of CO2-C-fixation rates and increased soil mineralization processes. As a result levels of carbon losses and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions increased in the short-term [1, 2]. Few studies have been carried out on the development of soil carbon and nitrous oxide emissions in medium or long-term (>1 year). In order to identify carbon sequestration and N2O-emissions...

N2O-Emissionen eines schnittgenutzten Kleegrasbestand unter Berücksichtigung von Narbenalter und Düngung Organic Eprints
Biegemann, Thorsten; Loges, Ralf; Chen, Shimeng; Taube, Friedhelm.

Comparative analysis of conventional and organic farming systems: Diversity and abundance of farmland birds Organic Eprints
Neumann, Helge; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
A comparative study on the abundance of breeding birds and wintering birds was carried out over the period 2005-2007 in conventionally and organically managed arable fields in Northern Germany. Birds were surveyed on 40 (breeding season) and 35 (non-breeding season) pairs of fields (conventional/organic), which were selected with regard to similar field sizes, comparable boundary structures (hedges, shrubs) and representative crop rotations. Averaged over three years of investigation, skylarks (Alauda arvensis) and, less distinct, pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) occurred more often on organic fields. In contrast, yellow wagtails (Motacilla flava) showed higher abundances on conventional fields in one year. The diversity of farmland bird species was not...

Empirical model for quantification of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in leguminous crops Organic Eprints
Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Loges, Ralf; Jensen, Erik Steen; Jørgensen, Finn V.; Vinther, Finn P..
Symbiotically fixed N2 (SNF) is an important input of nitrogen (N) in many cropping systems. In spite of this fact, the input of fixed N to a particular cropping system is usually not known, and an exact estimation of the amount of N2 fixed requires laborious measurements. Consequently, there is a demand for a simple and reliable tool to estimate N2 fixation in leguminous crops. A model is here proposed for quantification of SNF in leguminous crops in different arable systems. The model estimates SNF using dry matter yield as input and cropping system specific values for the parameters: N concentration in dry matter and the proportion of the N in the legume that is derived from the atmosphere. Further, the model includes fixed N not included in the...

Lachgasemission und Nitratauswaschung verschiedener Futterproduktionssysteme in Abhängigkeit von der Vornutzung Organic Eprints
Bunne, Inga; Kluß, Christof; Loges, Ralf; Herrmann, Antje; Taube, Friedhelm.
Intensified agriculture is often associated with nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and nitrate (NO3) leaching losses into groundwater due to high application rates of N-fertilizer, increasing maize cultivation and ploughing up permanent grassland. N2O is an important anthropogenic greenhouse gas and agriculture is one of the main polluters. NO3 leaching endangers groundwater quality. In a field experiment on the organically managed farm “Lindhof” in Northern Germany three different forage production systems (1. crop rotation, 2. continuous silage maize 3. permanent grassland) were established parallelly after a) ploughing up permanent grassland and b) longtime arable use. N2O emissions were measured weekly over the two-year experimental period. Soil water...
