List of hydro-, phreato- and aphreatophytes in the Netherlands Phreatophytes are species (or other taxa) which are in a certain part of their distribution area exclusively or mainly limited to the sphere of influence of the phreatic surface (level of the ground water). Species which in their distribution are not limited to this sphere of influence, are called aphreatophytes. A list (LONDO, 1975) was made on the basis of field observations for the purpose of ground water management in the Netherlands. Limosella aquatica L., a species occurring along riverbanks, has been found rarely in other parts of our country. In the dunes near Zandvoort (in the environment of Haarlem) it was collected in 1835, that is before the beginning of the water catchment for the water supply of Amsterdam. In 1963 the species was found again in this dune area where recharging is accomplished by the supply of water from the river Lek since 1957. As a consequence some small dune lakes were left dry and J. mutabilis was growing abundantly in two of them, where previously it was absent or of sporadic occurrence. The genus Taraxacum and the species Plantago lanceolata are closely alike in their behaviour in space and time. Op een excursie in begin mei 1957 naar de Baanakkers, een natuurmonumentje bij Jisp in de Zaanstreek, dat o.a. bekendheid geniet als groeiplaats van Empetrum nigrum en Corydalis claviculata, vond ik in het berkenbosje aldaar een bloeiend exemplaar van Sambucus racemosa. De vraag, hoe deze struik in zo’n bosje op drassige veengrond terecht was gekomen, werd opgelost door de aanwezige vogeluitwerpselen en de rijke opslag van Sambucus nigra. Het bleek, dat het berkenbosje een geliefkoosde slaapplaats voor spreeuwen is in dit bosarme plassengebied en het is wel zeker, dat deze vogels de natuurlijke verspreiders zijn van de beide Sambucus-soorten, zoals ook M.T. Jansen al heeft geconstateerd in zuidoostelijk Utrecht. Er rest nog de vraag waar de spreeuwen de... As a supplement to the paper of HILLEGERS in Gorteria 4 (9), 1969, p. 161—165, the present author mentions a locality of Gagea lutea in the dune-area near Haarlem. Of many species growing especially in old countryseats (“stinsen”) the factor “former cultivation” was thought to be the most important one for the occurrence of these species in the Netherlands. The author points out that the ecological factors up till now are practically neglected, but that they are of great importance. It is possible that many of these species are really native in many countryseats. Naturalis Londo, G.. In former times Juncus tenageia was a rather common species in various parts of the Netherlands. Now it has become very rare as a result of the lowering of the waterlevel and of manuring. Excavation of loam near Udenhout (province N.-Brabant) resulted in a new habitat for the species. It was evident that J. tenageia is only present when the excavated loam was flooded in the last winter or spring. A rising waterlevel in the vegetation season, as was the case in 1972, resulted in the absence of this species. Op kleine afstand hier vandaan nu is kort geleden een stuk duin gedeeltelijk afgegraven en grote aantallen grote sterns, visdiefjes en meeuwen gebruiken deze zandvlakte als rustplaats. Zelf ontdekte ik dit jaar enige dergelijke groeiplaatsen in de omgeving van Haarlem aan de binnenduinrand. L.C.M.Rich. is binnen Nederland een zeldzame soort die zowel in kalkgraslanden in Zuid-Limburg als in de kustduinen voorkomt. Het viel op dat de soort in de duinen een aanzienlijk latere bloeitijd heeft dan die in het binnenland. Ook in bloemkleur en vorm van de bloeiaar wijkt het duintype af van het kalkgraslandtype. Een transplantatieproef, waarbij het duintype naar het binnenland werd overgebracht, toonde aan dat de kenmerken van het duintype behouden bleven en dus geen gevolg zijn van klimaatverschillen. For calculations on the basis of coverage (e.g. of difference- and change quotients) the symbols of this scale have to be transformed in values proportional to the real coverage percentages. Attention is paid to the natural habitats in Germany and France of stinse plants, especially Corydalis bulbosa. These habitats are dynamic environments such as the lower parts of slopes and along brooks in woods. Naturalis Londo, G.. Until recently Equisetum telmateia was a very rare species of spring habitats in woodlands in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Since 1972, the species has been found in other (mainly western) parts of the country in different habitats: in roadverges, along ditches, on a dike and on embanked sand flats. Observations outside the Netherlands show that E. telmateia can grow abundantly in roadverges and along ditches (e.g. along the Lagoon of Venice) often together with E. arvense. E. telmateia can probably establish (by developing a prothallium or gametophyte) itself only in wet and mostly calcareous habitats on bare soil or in a sparse vegetation, as do various other Equisetum species. The ‘Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen’ is a dune area near Haarlem in the calcareous Dune district. Since 1851 it is the water catchment area of Amsterdam. Due to the lowering of the groundwater level the moist dune slacks have disappeared gradually. Since 1957 infiltration of water from the river Rhine takes place for the water supply of Amsterdam. This water, rich in nutrients, causes among others a ruderal vegetation of high forbs and poor in species instead of the former species-rich dune slack vegetation. Since about 1970 locally a divergent vegetation is developing.
