Estimating Synaphobranchus kaupii densities: Contribution of fish behaviour to differences between bait experiments and visual strip transects ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Lorance, Pascal.
Kaup's arrowtooth eel Synaphobranchus kaupii is a small-bodied fish and an abundant inhabitant of the European continental slope. To estimate its local density video information using the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Victor 6000 were collected at three locations in the Bay of Biscay slope. Two methods for estimating local densities were tested: strip transect counts and bait experiments. For bait experiments three behaviour types were observed in about equal proportions for individuals arriving near the seafloor: moving up the current towards the ROV, moving across the current and drifting with the current. Visible attraction towards the bait was the highest for individuals swimming against the current (80%) and about equally low for the other two types...

Prey preferences of adult sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax in the northeastern Atlantic: implications for bycatch of common dolphin Delphinus delphis ArchiMer
Spitz, Jerome; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Cardinaud, M.; Kostecki,; Lorance, Pascal.
In the northeastern Atlantic, adult sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is one of largest fish living on the shelf, and this species has important commercial value. However, pelagic trawl fisheries that target sea bass have negative operational interactions with common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Our goal was to determine the diet of adult sea bass in the Bay of Biscay from stomachcontent and stable-isotope analyses, and explore the dietary overlap between sea bass and common dolphins. We found that sea bass primarily target small pelagic fish, most notably mackerel (Scomber scombrus), scads (Trachurus spp.), anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), and sardine (Sardina pilchardus). These four species also dominated the diets of common dolphins. This overlap in...

Les activités de production - conchyliculture ArchiMer
Deschamps, Gerard; Miossec, Dominique; Pannier, Thierry; Huet, Jerome; Lorance, Pascal.
These studies of halieutic ecology produced at the request of Electricité de France by the French Institute of Research for Exploitation of the Sea in the Normand Breton Gulf must constitute one of the elements making it possible to come to a conclusion or not on the feasibility of the tidal power plant construction project; these studies have three parts: The first part discusses halieutic zooplankton. In the first place, the main species that constitute the exploitable living resources are considered, observed from the first stages of their life, in the egg or at different larval stages preceding the juvenile state. Also of interest are certain holoplanktonic groups. The whole of these observations establishes the status of zooplanktonic populations...

Développement de la pêche martiniquaise - Mise en valeur des ressources démersales : des bancs du nord de la Guadeloupe, entre 100 et 300 m de profondeur autour de la Martinique ArchiMer
Battaglia, Andre; Guillou, Alain; Lorance, Pascal; Reynal, Lionel.

GenoPopTaille. Moving stock assessment into the future ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Biais, Gerard; Bidault, Adeline; Charrier, Grégory; Cornette, Florence; Lapegue, Sylvie; Laroche, Jean; Le Cam, Sabrina; Stephan, Eric; Trenkel, Verena; Lorance, Pascal.
At the ecosystem level, sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources depends not only on the status of target species but also on that of bycatch species, some of which are even more sensitive to exploitation. This is the case for a number of elasmobranchs (skates, rays and sharks) species whose abundance declined during the 20th century. Further, the biology of elamobranchs is still poorly known and traditional fisheries stock assessment methods using fisheries catches and scientific survey data for estimating abundance are expensive or even inapplicable due to the small numbers observed. The GenoPopTaille project attempts to apply to the case of the thornback ray (Raja clavata) recent genetic-based methods for absolute population abundance estimation...

First record of Pagellus bellottii (Teleostei: Sparidae) in the Bay of Biscay, France ArchiMer
Iglésias, Samuel P.; Lorance, Pascal.
The red pandora, Pagellus bellottii Steindachner, 1882, is a tropical and subtropical demersal Sparidae (Porgies) that lives over hard or sandy bottoms in coastal marine waters. It mostly occurs at depths ranging from 10 to 50 metres. It is distributed in the eastern Atlantic, from the Strait of Gibraltar to Angola and the Canary Islands where it is occasionally recorded (Bauchot and Hureau, 1986; Franqueville, 1983). The species is also recorded in the southwestern Mediterranean, in the Alboran Sea, off the Algerian coasts and in the Gulf of Gabes (Oral, 2010). The records of the species in the eastern Mediterranean, Syrian and Israeli waters (Fricke, et al. 2014, Fig. 1) is questioned. We consider these records are misidentification of Pagrus pagrus...

Age estimation and growth of some deep-sea fish from the northeast Atlantic ocean ArchiMer
Allain, Valerie; Lorance, Pascal.
Age is a necessary parameter used in population dynamics to assess the state of exploited resources. This parameter is poorly known for most deep-sea species (depth > 400 m). This work focused on age estimation from otoliths of Alepocephalus bairdii (Alepocephalidae), Coryphaenoides rupestris (Macrouridae), Helicolenus dactylopterus (Sebastidae) and Hoplostethus atlanticus (Trachichthyidae), which French fishery exploitation, off the west coasts of the British Isles, began the late 1980's. Considering otolith growth zones as annual, the four species all show high longevity: 38, 54, 43 and 130 years, respectively, together with slow growth. The differences in growth between sex were estimated and difficulties in accurately estimating the age were...

Testing CPUE-derived spatial occupancy as an indicator for stock abundance: application to deep-sea stocks ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena; Beecham, Jonathan A.; Blanchard, Julia L.; Edwards, Charles T. T.; Lorance, Pascal.
The status of an exploited population is ideally determined by monitoring changes in abundance and distributional range and pattern over time. Area of occupancy is a measure of the current distribution. Unfortunately, for many populations, scientific abundance and distribution information is not readily available. To evaluate the reliability of commercial fishing data for deriving occupancy indicators that could serve as proxies for stock abundance, we investigated four questions: 1) Occupancy changes with stock biomass, but is this change strong enough to make occupancy a sensitive indicator of population biomass? 2) Fishing boats follow fish, but when does such activity alter the positive macroecological relationship between occupancy and abundance? 3)...

Assessment of impacts from human activities on ecosystem components in the Bay of Biscay in the early 1990s ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Bertrand, Jacques; Brind'Amour, Anik; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena.
The ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management and, more specifically, the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive require the assessment of the state and dynamics of an ecosystem in order to determine suitable management strategies. This paper takes an analytical approach to assess the state of the Bay of Biscay ecosystem in the early 1990s, chosen as a period of reference because key monitoring data series have been collected since then. To assess the state of the ecosystem, the pressures exerted by six broad categories of human activities were examined. A literature review of the ecosystem components was made and a component tree was tailored according to data availability. Data rich components were subdivided into subcomponents for their...

Insights from genetic and demographic connectivity for the management of rays and skates ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Lorance, Pascal; Andrello, Marco; Charrier, Gregory; Le Cam, Sabrina; Lehuta, Sigrid; Trenkel, Verena.
Studying demographic and genetic connectivity can help assessing marine meta-population structure. Rays and skates have no larval phase hence population connectivity can only result from active  movement of individuals. Using thornback ray (Raja clavata) in European waters as a case study, demographic  and genetic connectivity were studied for 11 putative populations for unequal population abundances and two  hypotheses of dispersal rates. Genetic simulation results highlighted three large meta-populations: in the  Mediterranean, around the Azores and on the Northeast Atlantic shelf. Demographic results highlighted a finer  population structure indicating that several pairs of putative populations might be demographically linked.  Results were highly...

Deriving blue ling abundance indices from industry haul by haul data ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Pawlowski, Lionel; Trenkel, Verena.
A database of tallybooks, from skippers' own logbooks, provided by the French industry involved in deep-water fishing to the west of the British Isles was used to standardise blue ling Landings per Unit of Effort (LPUEs). The data covered the years 1992-2008 with more extensive data for the period 2000-2007. For each haul, landings by species, tow duration, depth and location were reported. Compared to EU logbooks, this database is on a haul by haul basis instead of being aggregated by fishing sub-trips combining hauls from the same day, ICES rectangle and gear. Moreover, it includes depth, which is a major factor for catch rates in deepwater fisheries. LPUEs were estimated from Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) with depth, vessel, statistical rectangle...

Europe has a long tradition of exploiting marine fishes and is promoting marine economic activity through its Blue Growth strategy. This increase in anthropogenic pressure, along with climate change, threatens the biodiversity of fishes and food security. Here, we examine the conservation status of 1,020 species of European marine fishes and identify factors that contribute to their extinction risk. Large fish species (greater than 1.5 m total length) are most at risk; half of these are threatened with extinction, predominantly sharks, rays and sturgeons. This analysis was based on the latest International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) European regional Red List of marine fishes, which was coherent with assessments of the status of fish stocks...

A Bayesian state-space model to estimate population biomass with catch and limited survey data: application to the thornback ray (Raja clavata) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Lorance, Pascal; Trenkel, Verena M..
The thornback ray (Raja clavata) in the Bay of Biscay is presumed to have declined during the 20th Century. To evaluate this decline and estimate biomass trajectories, a hypothetical catch time series was created for the period 1903-2013. A Bayesian state-space biomass production model with a Schaefer production function was fitted to the hypothetical catch time series and to a shorter research vessel Catch Per Unit Eeffort (CPUE) time series (1973-2013, with missing years). A censored likelihood made it possible to obtain biomass estimates without a CPUE time series or only with an estimate of biomass depletion. A simulation-estimation approach showed a high sensitivity of results to the prior for the intrinsic growth rate. The model provided biomass...

Catch Per Unit Effort of deep-sea species off the continental slope to the west of British Isles. ArchiMer
Girard, Marine; Lorance, Pascal; Biseau, Alain.
Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) trends of the main target species of the deep-sea fishery were recorded for one sample trawler in two areas to the west of the British Isles, from 1993 to 1997. Considered species were the orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), the roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris), the black scabbard fish (Aphanopus carbo) and two squalid sharks: the Portuguese dogfish (Centroscymnus coelolepis) and the leafscale gulper shark (Centrophorus squamosus). Two sources of data have been used: the catch and effort database of IFREMER and the personal logbooks of the skipper from the sample trawler. The personal logbooks indicate the catch per haul, whereas the IFREMER database provides the catch and effort per day and statistical...
