NAMIBIE (a french acronym for Integrated Multimedia Navigator Within Coastal Environment Data Bases) is a specific tool which first concept has been established by Ifremer and has been developped by an association between research in the field of coastal environment, innovation in the field of new information and communication technologies and services in the field of coastal integrated management and impact studies. The objectives of this tool are to facilitate research, direct access and display of relevant multimedia coastal integrated data and information according to an interactive, widely opened and playfull interface. The principles are based upon the fact that sustainable decision making needs an optimized unterstanding of coastal processes and... |

Maintaining shellfish production activities, ensuring their quality and optimising the management of reserved space use with a perspective of sustainable growth are questions that interest a very significant block of French coastal sites. To achieve such objectives, it must especially be possible to relate the spatial distribution of the farmed stocks and environmental constraints: physical characteristics of the environment, nutritive resources, health constraints, environmental protection constraints... |

The coastal zone of Charente-Maritime in France has a leading position in oyster culture production. Yet it is being jeopardized by a number of problems such as overstocking, inadequate distribution of culture types, wild stock in excess, and strong siltation processes. Some of these problems result from a lack of communication and realization within the professional community, others due to obsolete management tools. The introduction of geomatics is believed to help provide some answers, besides alleviating the classical task of lease management. This chapter shows how the system was built, the spatial data geo-referenced and linked to administrative data. Examples of queries on the spatial data base reveal some otherwise invisible facts and allow... |

This text calls back all the questions asked by the digital connections by submarine cables and the main stakes which emerge in the South Pacific. It develops the challenges put by the cybersecurity questions before opening the perspectives offered by the double use of these maritime connections for purposes of knowledge but also alert, monitoring as security. The text develops then the solutions which these connections authorize under two ways. First is the potential regarding "Smart Cables" authorizing the operational monitoring of long term environmental parameters in depths, as the early warnings relative to natural hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis...). Second, from now on operation, relates on the connection of seafloor and water column cabled submarine... |

The final session of CoastGIS'99 took the form of a panel discussion, led and chaired by Darius Barrlett with contributions From Cindy Fowler, Roger Longhorn, Francois Cuq, Ron Furness ancl Lionel Loubersac. This was followed by a wider discussion of topics and issues raised, and included several interventions and commentaries from the floor. What follows is an edited transcript of the main points raised. While based on the verbal contributions from those named, editorial responsibility rests entirely with the session chair. |

This article, which is one of the components of the dedicated water file of the RJPENC number 37, deals with seawater. After an introduction it consists of 7 chapters. The first deals with its surface and its volume. The second deals with its possible origins. Chapter 3 discusses its circulation and dynamics. Chapter 4 explains why it is salty. The fifth recalls that this seawater does not contain only salt and is at the origin of different mineral formations of the seabed. The 6th deals with the energies from which it is the source and the seventh deals with the fact that it is the origin of life. A conclusion recalls some characteristics of this seawater in legal, political and economic terms |

The present paper is subsequent to the Meetings and Workshops: Biodiversity, for an oversea successful win back organized in September 2018 by the Ministry for Ecology and solidarity transition and the Ministry for Overseas France. Given the now well-known worsening and loss of biodiversity at large and of marine biodiversity in particular, possible solutions are envisaged, largely inspired by what Nature devises for our societies to organise themselves and endeavour to solve questions raised. It explains how Nature is an “interacting plurality”. Besides, the ecosystems that Nature created in 4 billion years of evolution are the result of co-dependent webs and interspecies relationships where each one is ultimately useful to the other, harmonising specific... |

The present report synthesizes the results of the works led in collaboration between the IFREMER, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic service of the French Navy (Oceanographic Mission of the Pacific) and the Departments of the Sea and Fish farming and of the Management and Town planning of the Territory of the French Polynesia. After a reminder of the problems regarding morphological and hydrographic mapping of low islands (atolls) of the Pacific in particular in French Polynesia, a paragraph draws up the assets of the aerial and spatial images as well as the computer-assisted digital mapping. A chapter of the report is then dedicated to the data, to the digital processing methodologies and to the display of the results. The following one develops the... |

This text is focused on the popularization of the general public, edited in a magazine connected to the sea. It explicits, in first part, all the factors which make that the surface of the sea is not horizontal. In second part are introduced the principles of the satellite altimetry which allows to measure the slope of the surface of the sea which, because of the variations of Earth' attraction from a point to an other, is directly connected to the topography of the bottom of the oceans. After a historical review of the various altimeter satellite missions launched from the beginning of 1970s to our days, the text discusses the applications allowed by the topographic images of the bottom of seas and the progress that these spatial technologies have... |

This article has for objective to put forward the ethical values of the sea and the ocean. After a reminder(abs of the marine origin of life on earth and what the human always carries in him tracks of this origin, we underline several characteristics: the regulation of the climate by the ocean, the specificities of part of the animal kingdom which unlike other did not conquer the terrestrial domain, the fact that marine biological material was at the origin of numerous Nobel prizes, finally which the sea holds number of biological, mineral, energy resources etc. which will be the resources of tomorrow. The following part is dedicated to the human values which the sea inculcates to those who frequent her. We offer a list of some current expressions of the... |

The object of this article is to offer a synthesis of the knowledge clarifying the originality and the diversity of the submarine geological formations of the New Caledonian EEZ. A reminder is given onto the geologic history of the region, based upon the dislocation of the Gondwana Continent, the opening of the Tasman Sea, the presence of submarine volcanism, the setting up of heavy peridotitic rocks, the building up of the Fairway and Lord Howe Ridges and of sedimentary basins, the formation of volcanic domes and sea-mounts or guyots, the subduction along the Vanuatu Trench, the uplift of the Loyalty Islands, the development of carbonated ptatforms around the islands etc.... Of this complex history ensues an exceptional submarine geo-diversity. After this... |

This text, directed to the general public exposes, in first part, on the educational point of view, the mechanisms of ocean acidification resulting from the trapping of the carbon dioxide. Then the text presents a state of the knowledge about the speed of the phenomenon, about its geographical heterogeneousness on the surface of the globe, it draws up a balance sheet of existing or potential impacts on the living species and discusses aggravating factors. In conclusion are called back the main remaining questions, are discussed various solutions in parade to the phenomenon and are underlined the main scientific gaps. |
