Spring cereals: from dynamic ideotypes to cultivars in Northern latitudes Organic Eprints
Mäkelä, Pirjo; Muurinen, Susanna; Peltonen-Sainio, Pirjo.
The ideotype of a crop is a model of a plant community where all necessary and beneficial traits for crop performance in a particular environment are combined. It is important to consider the environment when developing an ideotype since climatic, edaphic and agronomic features of the target region have a major role in determining crop performance. New technologies, high yielding cultivars, irrigation and water management, plant protection materials and more skilful farm management practices have increased yields and yield potentials on cereals in Finland as in many other countries. In this paper we aim to summarize traits which would be useful from the farmers’ perspective. The most important trait is increased early vigour of spring cereals, including...

Winter turnip rape: a potential N catch crop Organic Eprints
Tuulos, Antti; Stoddard, Frederick; Yli-Halla, Markku; Mäkelä, Pirjo.
The N scavenging ability of winter turnip rape was investigated in a field experiment in 2009 and 2010 at the Viikki Experimental Farm (University of Helsinki, Finland). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates.

Evaluation of maize and hemp cultivars as bioenergy crop Organic Eprints
Santanen, Arja; Kenedy, Epie; Mäkelä, Pirjo; Stoddard, Frederick.
We are cultivating annual and perennial crops as monoculture and as mixed culture to investigate plant biomass use for production of renewable energy sources in northern latitudes. We have grown different hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) and bioenergy maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars in 2007-2009 at Viikki Experimental Farm, University of Helsinki.

The role of legumes in bioenergy poduction Organic Eprints
Stoddard, Fred; Helenius, Juha; Mäkelä, Pirjo; Niemi, Elisa; Seppänen, Mervi; Turakainen, Marja.
We are investigating the role of legumes as components of bioenergy production. Two separate experiments, one with annual species and other with perennials, were established at Viikki in 2007. Selected grasses, legumes (or nitrogen fertilizer) and additional species were sown singly or in blends of two or three species.
