This article determines type and amount of non-organic substrates used for biogas production on organic farms in Germany. Furthermore, it discusses determinants and problems of non-organic substrate use. Conventional substrate – mainly maize – is extensively used in larger biogas plants on farms without sufficient land area and/or low stocking rates per kWel. These overcapacities of organic biogas plants may represent maladjustment to external preconditions as a result of bad planning as well as carefully considered exploitations of business opportunities on the basis of external inputs. In order to reduce non-organic substrate use due to bad planning, on one hand biogas consulting services which account for the particular conditions of organic agriculture... |

This paper presents first results of a standardized online survey among Suisse organic farmers and their buyers on business relations. Participating organic farmers not only expect their buyers to pay fair prices but also to act consistently, be transparent and invest in good personal relations. Buyers expect their agricultural suppliers to provide high product quality products, be reliable and transparent while fair prices are mentioned less frequently. Many of the statements given by both farmers and buyers reflect aspects of the organizational justice theory as well as a related Bio Suisse code of conduct. A majority of Suisse organic farmers and buyers are satisfied with their business relationships. |

Management measures to maintain or increase soil organic matter (SOM) are generally associated with additional costs and a decreasing profitability of crop rotations. However, certain SOM-enhancing strategies may have the potential to synergistically optimize also the economic output in the short or long term. We evaluated several crop rotations and green/straw manuring systems on diverging site properties in stockless farm systems for their effects on production economics. Benefits may especially derive from an increased spatio-temporal synchronization of crop nutrient demand and nutrient supply by turning green manures into mobile fertilizers, which can even result in short term economic benefits. However, as effects do not necessarily show instantly,... |

As agri-environmental schemes often do not provide sufficient financial compensa-tion for an environmentally sound management of semi-natural grasslands, this study intended to identify ecologically and economically sustainable grassland management options, as well as their respective risk potentials. Economic and risk analyses of organic bio-energy, animal husbandry and landscape maintenance systems indicate, that the newly developed IFBB-System (Integrated Generation of Solid Fuel and Biogas from Biomass) as an add-on system to a customary biogas plant exhibits the most risk-stable and economically exquisite land use system. The regarded animal husbandry system relies on optimal framework conditions, while landscape maintenance systems below the line are... |

A goal in ecological agriculture is to avoid and reduce soil compaction. One possibility is the use of a tire inflation system (TIS). Additionally, sowing equipment with broader working width can be used. Both technologies save working time and fuel. Furthermore, yield could increase due to less soil compaction, especially for peas as field trials show. Data from the field trials and from original farms were used to calculate the profitability for the soil protection technologies. The fuel savings are enough to cover the variable and fix costs of the TIS. The pea surplus is an extra revenue. If working time reduction is additionally valued than in total the farms can gain above 19,-€/ha arable land using a TIS. The most farms have not enough traction power... |

The German Federal programme on organic farming and other forms of sustainable agriculture developed practical cultivation strategies with the aim of improving soil fertility and plant nutrition. During the five-year project, some new practical knowledge was gained. These findings are listed in the booklet. Reading this guideline should encourage farmers to intensify the cultivation of grain legumes. |

In recent years a growing interest in using draft horses for farm work in Germany and Europe can be observed. However, precise data concerning the performance of modern horse-drawn technology are currently rarely available. In a field study labor time requirements were measured on four farms and one market garden with regular use of draft horses. In addition, farm managers were interviewed in order to learn about their intentions to use draft horses nowadays. On the basis of the gathered data, area performance (ha/h) and total labor time requirements (AKh/ha) of several field procedures were processed. A comparison with current tractor data shows that although the tractor performs better in all field procedures, there are merely little differences... |

An adequate supply of organic matter to arable soils is essential for the maintenance of soil productivity. Still, management implications can cause a trade-off with economics, as measures for soil organic matter management may not directly induce ecosystem services that increase the profitability of the system. This is especially true with regard to stockless organic farming systems, where well-proven measures, as the integration of fodder legumes in crop rotations, may not seem attractive with regard to the revenue. In this article we evaluate strategies for soil organic matter management in stockless organic farming systems based on scenarios for different soil-climate conditions in Germany to deal with this challenge. Several options to make use of... |

Cultivation methods in organic farming are controversial discussed as the traditional ploughing system faces a variety of disadvantages, especially with regard to soil con-servation. To address these problems a mound cultivation system has been devel-oped. This paper presents a case study (on-farm-research) combined with expert interviews and economic modelling results. The aims of the study are to identify the most important cost driver, to calculate the cost of mound cultivation with regard to energy consumption and labour costs and to formulate conditions where this system is economically viable. Experience from on-farm-research and modelling show that the system is in particular suitable for large farms where the field labour organisation is a... |
