Some rain and savanna forests of western Suriname (Corantijn R., Winana Creek; Upper Marataka R.; Upper Nickerie R;) were studied and their composition was compared with that of forests of other parts of Suriname and Guyana. The savanna forests of western Suriname proved to be much related to Guyanan ( Walabaand Dakama-) savanna forests as described by Davis & Richards (1934) and Fanshawe (1952). On the other hand, there was less relationship as regards rain forests of western Suriname when compared with ones of Guyana and other parts of Suriname, except for the Demerara greenheart forest of the Upper Marataka R., which was closely related to the Demerara greenheart forests of Guyana as described by Davis & Richards (1934). In addition an upland... |

The six species of Curtia, including a hitherto undescribed species published here, as well as the monotypic genus Hockinia can be distinguished from each other by the seed coat structure. The anticlinal walls and the cuticle provide the most useful information. Curtia tenuifolia appears to be a complex species, but subsp. tenella can be readily separated from this complex by the seed coat structure. Heterostyly has been found in C. tenuifolia subsp. tenuifolia, C. obtusifolia, and Hockinia montana, but differences in seed coat structure can not be correlated with long-, short-, and equal-styled flowers. The differences in seed coat structure, the length of the seeds, and the number of cells per seed plead for maintaining Hockinia (closely related to... |

A taxonomic revision of the genus Guatteria, including the former genera Guatteriella, Guatteriopsis and Heteropetalum is given. Within the genus Guatteria 177 species are recognized, 25 of which are new. Included are chapters on the history of the taxonomy of the genus, morphology, wood anatomy, karyology, palynology, chemistry, flower biology and pollination, dispersal, distribution and ecology, phylogeny and molecular studies, conservation, and uses. A synoptical key to all species is included, as well as two dichotomous keys, one for the species of Central America and Mexico, and one for the species of NE, E and SE Brazil. The species treatments include descriptions, full synonymy, geographical and ecological notes, vernacular names and taxonomic... |

This paper follows upon an earlier paper in the series “Studies in Annonaceae” (Maas et al. 1986). Twelve new species are described, viz. 2 in Duguetia, 1 in Ephedranthus, 5 in Guatteria, 2 in Hornschuchia, 1 in Tetrameranthus, and 1 in Unonopsis. A new combination is made in Enicosanthellum. Some amendments and additions to the revision of Tetrameranthus (Westra 1985), including an updated key, are given. Monocarpia euneura Miq. appears to have priority over M. marginalis (R. Scheffer) James Sincl. Additional collections have been made of the rare species Bocagea longepedunculata Martius, Xylopia crinita R.E. Fries, and Xylopia excellens R.E. Fries. Attention is drawn to several recent collections from Bahia, Brazil, which are perhaps referable to... |

Anaxagorea A. St. Hil. is distinct from other Annonaceae by the fruits. Unlike most members of the family, it occurs both in the Neotropics and in the Palaeotropics. Several chapters are devoted to a.o. morphology, anatomy, karyology, palynology, chemistry, pollination and seed dispersal, geography and ecology, economic uses and vernacular names, partly compiled from existing literature or collectors’ notes, partly as a result of own investigations. A cladistic analysis of intrageneric relationships is given. The taxonomic part provides descriptions, synonyms (nomina nuda are not included), dichotomous keys. For practical reasons, separate keys are given for neotropical and palaeotropical taxa. For neotropical species, a synoptic key is also provided.... |

A taxonomic revision of the genus Desmopsis is presented. Within the genus Desmopsis 25 species are recognized, 9 of which are new, with one new combination. Distinguishing morphological characteristics are discussed, and a dichotomous key to all species is given. The species treatments include descriptions, full synonymy, geographical and ecological notes, vernacular names, and taxonomic notes. Distribution maps are presented of all species, and a complete identification list of exsiccatae examined is included. |

A taxonomic revision is made of the Neotropical genus Pseudoxandra. This genus forms part of the Cremastosperma alliance which consists of Bocageopsis, Cremastosperma, Ephedranthus, Klarobelia, Malmea, Mosannona, Onychopetalum, Oxandra, Pseudephedranthus, Pseudomalmea, Pseudoxandra, Ruizodendron, and Unonopsis, all from the Neotropics. Within Pseudoxandra 22 species are recognized, four of which were described quite recently by the first author (Maas et al., 1986). Fourteen species are described here as new. Two dichotomous keys are provided, one for the genera of the Cremastosperma alliance, and the other for the species of Pseudoxandra. The species treatments include descriptions, geographical and ecological notes, distribution maps, synonymy, taxonomic... |

Two new species of Tachia (Gentianaceae: Helieae) are described from Brazil. They share the unusual characteristic of quadrangular, winged stems, formerly only known from Tachia longipes in Suriname. They differ from this species in their larger, winged, keeled, and long-acuminate calyx lobes. Tachia lancisepala, spec. nov., is only known from one collection from the State of Rondônia in Brazil, and has unusually large and broadly funnelshaped corollas and ovate leaves with winged petioles. Tachia siwertii, spec. nov., has been found in three separate areas in southern Amazonas and Pará (Brazil) and is characterized by more elliptic leaves, unwinged petioles, and a narrower corolla than T. lancisepala. |

Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, bracteate and bracteolate, arranged in cymose inflorescences or flowers solitary and terminal. Calyx 4—5-merous, tubular, often with discoid scales at the inner base. Corolla 4—5-merous, tubular, salvershaped, the lobes contorted in bud. Stamens implanted in the corolla-tube, as many as the corolla-lobes, episepalous, anthers with distinct filaments or subsessile, 2-celled, introrse, longitudinally dehiscing. Ovary superior, unilocular, with 2 intruded parietal placentas, ovules oo, anatropous. Style simple, stigma 2-lobed to capitate. Fruit a longitudinally dehiscing capsule, seeds oo, small, with a small embryo, endosperm fleshy. About 800... |

After completion of the monograph of Anaxagorea, a number of new collections were studied and annotated. Among this material there appeared to be a new species from Venezuela, at the same time the first true rheophyte in Annonaceae. The rare and hitherto incompletely known A. silvatica has now turned up from the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. The flower of this species is described for the first time. New records are mentioned insofar as they add to previously existing information. |
